Steve Canipe

After you guys graduated, from an educational standpoint, I went to Michigan State as an NSF fellow earning a master's degree and a Duke Power fellowship paid for my doctorate at Duke University.

Personally: I married East history teacher Sharon Wilbourne in 1972 (our 50th is next year). Currently we live in Cottonwood, AZ. We've had two children, Marti who is a professor at Northern AZ Univ and David who is an auditor with a resort in Sedona. We are now grandparents to Tristan who turned 8 in 2024.

Professionally: Stayed at East through 1976 when I became Asst. Principal at Albemarle Rd. Jr. High. Then worked for the state in Public Instruction and then PR with Duke Power. Became a high school principal in Lincoln County and finally returned to Mecklenburg as principal at JM Alexander Middle. Taught at Gaston College, UNC-CH (Institute of Government), NAU, and Walden Univ. since 2002; retired in 2022 and was named Dean Emeritus.
