Lonnie Floyd was my role model and hero. I was fortunate enough to be allowed to read his name on the 25th anniversery of the VietNam Wall. I became a member of the VietNam Teachers Network last summer and had the honor of saying a few words about Lonnie and Lance Workman.
Lonnie's passing had a big impact on the community. This "new to us" war in Vietnam became a sober reality with the loss of Lonnie. Years later I made a pencil rubbing of Lonnie's name at the Vietnam Memorial and took it to Mrs. Floyd. She was so appreciative. Lonnie was the best...but all those Floyds are the best.
Lonnie and I played football together our Junior year. I was somewhat new to City and once I challenged him to a foot race up the hill above the practice field. Needless to say he won and we would challenge each other often, he always winning.
Our 45th class reunion will be held in just a few weeks. Thank you for your sacrifice for our country. Thank you for the friendship you shared, your smile, and your spirit at CHS. You were one of the first in our class to pass, but you are not forgotten. I know you will be with us at this reunion, just like you have been at all the others.
Lonnie was a hero before he left us at City High and his family to serve his country. There were many of us who thought the military couldn't get a better soldier. He became a hero for our country and remains a hero in all our hearts. Thank you man.
Lonnie, I still miss you as much today as I did the day you were killed in Vietnam. That was the saddest day of my life. You'll always be a young 19 year old boy who volunteered for the Army. Rest in peace my dear brother and I'll never stop missing you and loving you.
Lonnie was a wonderful person whom everyone liked or loved. I played football our sophomore year; Lonnie was a terrific athlete and I remember how hard he was to tackle.

Lonnie would come up to Ozark Circle from time to time and we would play backyard football,,,me, Jimmy Brown,Bob Wilkerson,Bill Keptner, Greg Haskew ....and that was about 1964...Great guy Lonnie Floyd...
I remember distincly the day the Viet Nam war became real. I was in my room in Clement Dorm at UT. There was a knock on the door, and Judy O'Kelley was standing there. She said "I have the most awful news. Lonnie Floyd has been killed in Viet Nam." To this day, I can visualize exactly where we were standing, how much the door was open, etc.
