I remember Al as asst. XO of Delta Company.  Frank Pellegrini was the XO of Delta Company and when I visited Frank i would run into Al. We often talked about sports , If I remember correctly he played basketball and baseball for PMC. He was a cool guy who was confident and outgoing. One recollection, while attending a dance with a girl I met in Chester (Jackie Newhouse) we happened to pass Al on the way into the dance. I said, "Hi Al" as we walked by, I remember Jackie then saying.."who was that".  He was a Handsome guy. RIP Al.

As the CO of Delta Company, I recall Frank, and Al well.  Al and I were  close friends and was in my wedding party in June of 1966.  He was a jokester and enjoyed calling me "pear body".  I tried the phone number listed on the website and prior to that another source, and never received an answer.  God Rest His soul as Al was a great friend as well as person.

Walt Hemple sent an Obituary write up from Christian Brothers College High School:

CHRISTIAN BROTHERS COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL

Lt. Col. Alvin “Al” Shiffert passed away on Thursday after a battle with cancer. He was 75.

Lt. Col. Shiffert taught at CBC from 1991-92 until retiring in 2015. He taught various Social Studies courses including a popular elective on Terrorism. He also spent time as an assistant basketball coach. A Vietnam veteran, Shiffert served in the Army for more than two decades and was the last ROTC commander at CBC.

“Col. Shiffert was truly great,” said Social Studies teacher Ryan Batliner ’10. “He was more than a teacher. He expected the best from everyone and not just in his classroom but in the hallways, at your job, at the dinner table, etc. He helped me become a man throughout high school. He is the reason I am a teacher today. The impact Col. Shiffert had on me is the impact I want to have on my students. Rest In Peace to the greatest storyteller, mentor, and man I have ever met. Thank you for everything Colonel.”

“Col. Shiffert was very impactful in forming the man I am today,” alum Jake Burger ’14 said. “I’ll never forget the life lessons he taught us every day, including how to respect each other. I’ll always have a special place in my heart for Col. Shiffert. One last Hooah for the Col. RIP.”

The entire CBC community is grateful for Col. Shiffert’s commitment to our school and we will hold the Shiffert family in our prayers during this time.

St. John Baptist De La Salle – Pray for us.

I first met Al our freshman year when we were waiters in Old Main. I remember him as someone who was always clowning around, laughing and never took anything too seriously. There were times at least in freshman or sophmore year where it seemed he was always in trouble and all you ever heard was someone calling his last name Schiffffffffert! and you knew he was in trouble again. Someone mentioned he was a storyteller and that he was, but I think more often than not you thought he was always stretching the truth....but he was always fun to be around. Just seemed he never wanted to grow up!!!

The best thing I read about Al from one of his former students at the CBCHS about the influence Al had on his life and I am sure many others as well. We should all be lucky enough to have a legacy like that. Al made something of himself and for that he and all of us should be duly proud. Another great classmate who left us too soon. Our condolences to his family in this difficult time. However think of it this way. I bet Al has got all the angels splitting their sides in laughter or he is writing the next couple of chapters of the another story real or fiction to tell us when we join him. Rest in Peace, brother!
