Oh John... we're so sorry.

This is just too much.

First Paul Smolk and now Mike. Our hearts are breaking for the families of these classmates and for their lifelong friends like you and Per.  Please let us know when arrangements are made for Big-Mike, and in the meantime, Per has shared the live stream link for Paul's memorial service on February 19th from 10:30-noon.

Hey all -

Wanted to let our classmates know that our good friend, Jeff Mazur, had open heart surgery on Wednesday this week. He is recuperating well but will be in the hospital until sometime next week.

Please keep Jeff and his family in your thoughts and prayers.

I will update next week

Fellow Bicentennials... we have an opportunity to support a classmate who is always the first one to raise their hand and say to us... "How can I help?".  Our courageous Georgette is meeting the challenge of her cancer diagnosis head on, but the gap between health care coverage and out of pocket expenses is becoming wide to the point of overwhelming.  Please show her some Fearless & Bold love and if you can, a little help in closing that gap!

Michelle, as hard as it is to pass along the information, I deeply appreciate your sharing the difficult news of our dear classmate friends.  We all do.  Thank you.

Prayers for the repose of Paul, Janette and Mikes souls and that their families know we cared for our bicentennial brethern deeply.  May they rest in peace and their families cherish memories of lives well lived.

And prayers of healing strength and loving support for Georgette and Jeff.  The fight is difficult but we can take some solice in knowing God's healing power and love is with you both.

Thank you to everyone posting updates on our friends.  The extended family of we bicentennials stands strong and in loving support of each other.   Let us all value and appreicate the fragility of life and savor each day and live them well and fully.

Where ever you go, what ever you do, remember the honor ( and friendships ) of Lane.

Ed, it's a sad reminder of our mortality. 50 years ago, as we were waiting to discover if we would be Laneites, this was furthest from our young minds. My thoughts are with those classmates who have passed, and send support fir those who are fighting to stay with us.

Grace Tanaka (Danziger)

Michelle and all, I can't improve on what Ed and Greg have recently said - simply agree wholeheartedly. Even as we are all now in our 60's, it is really much too soon to pass into our next existence, or be fighting to remain in the one we are living. Please do keep posting updates when you know them, and I'll keep praying. Stay as safe and well as you can, my dear classmates.

Woo hoo!!

Just got back from the FINAL doctor followup after my heart surgery last September.  No more doctors!  No more meds!  Back to normal again... and healthier than before!

Think I'll go do a triathalon now.  Or, maybe just an ultra-marathon or two.

Michelle and all,

It breaks my heart to hear about the recent losses and struggles of some of our classmates. My prayers and condolences go out to them and their families. All I can say is that I hope we all can continue to embrace life, love and show appreciation to our families, friends and others in our various circles. And to do it when you can (if not sooner), because tomorrow is not guaranteed. We all have had loved ones who are no longer with us, but they will always live forever in our hearts and minds. I have so many fond memories and crazy experiences and incredible stories with loved ones no longer with me (and of those still with me), and it warms my heart to relive those, especially with others that knew them. And I try to do my best to engage fully with those still in my various circles and to let them know that they matter to me as those times may be the last chance to do so. Life for us 76’ers is getting shorter by the day and how short or long it will be, we do not have much control on that. So let us continue to be thankful for each new day and embrace it because it may be our last.

Janet and I had an Illinois Lane 76er meet us near our home in Florida. Tom Fallucca and his wife Jenny are traveling through some southern states in their Airstream. Not only was Tom a good friend of mine at Lane, we went to the same grammar school, St. Ed's; and, I stood up at his wedding back in 1978. I had not seen him since his wedding but through the magic of social media, we were able to reconnect a little while ago on Facebook.

We had lots to catch each other up on but felt like it was just a couple years that we hadn't seen each other instead of 44 years!

Ken Ortiz

Hello all,

I have another of those “number" observations that I hope you will enjoy. “What are the odds?”

My daughter’s birthday will be on February 22nd. So this year it will be on February 22nd 2022, or on 02/22/2022. Pretty cool. “But wait! There’s more!” <-- famous movie quote.

In short, her birthday this year will be on 2/22/22. How cool is that and what are the odds? The only other date that compares would be January 11th 2011, or 1/11/11. I don't know anybody whose birthday is on January 11th, but that would have been really cool to celebrate 11 years ago. See? More ones (1’s).

Unfortunately, my daughter was born in 1996, which means she will be 26 on 2/22/22, but what about those people who were born on February 22nd, 2000? They would now be 22 on 2/22/22. Now that is the ultimate cool celebration (just like those born on January 11, 2000 as they would be 11 on 1/11/11). What are the odds on that?

“But wait! There’s more! Hang on to your seats baby! Cause this one’s a screamer!” <---- complete famous movie quote (can you guess the movie yet?.....hint: it has Movie as part of it’s title)

So, here is how 2/22/22 beats 1/11/11: This year, my daughter’s birthday will be on 2/22/22, which is on a Tuesday which means that her birthday will be on TWOsday or 2’s day 2/22/22! (which is what 2/22/22 would probably be called). So this will be the ONLY time as far as I can see that 2/22/22 will be on a Tues(2’s)day, and if you are turning 22 on 2’s day 2/22/22, then you hit the ultimate jackpot, because what are the odds of that?

This tops the 1/11/11 date because there is no ONEsday in the week. Also, I looked ahead and the next relevant day would be 2/22/2222, but that day will be on a Friday and NOT on a Tues(2's)day.

Yikes! My brain cells need a break after all that.

I think a great memento for my daughter to keep (and definitely not cash) would be me bringing out my old trusty checkbook out of the archives and writing her a check for $222.22(2/22/22 = 2 hundred 22 dollars and 22 cents) to honor her birthday on this unique 2’s day this year.

Addendum: I thought that the ultimate 2’s day would be for those who were who were turning 22 on Tuesday(2’s day) 2/22/22, but again, after thinking of my daughter’s birth that day in 1996 and also with some additional pondering, again that famous movie quote  came to mind: “But wait! There’s more!” made me realize that there is even a more “ultimate" 2’s day for 2/22/22.

With my daughter’s birth, we were actually in the hospital on the 21st of February, but after going through a difficult labor, they decided to do a C-section and my daughter was delivered in the early morning hours of 2/22/96. I was also the first one to hold her after she was born and I have a vague idea of the time, but I will have to check out her birth certificate. Do you see where I am going with this?

So, for people who were born on 2/22/2000, who will be 22 on Tuesday (2’s day) 2/22/22, wouldn’t the ULTIMATE 2’s day be if they were also born at 2:22 AM? Now, what are the odds of THAT? I think that would be the ultimate 2’s day ever!

One last thought – of all of the people in the world who would be turning 22 on 2/22/22, how many would have a time of birth at 2:22 AM? What do you think? I am pretty sure there are some curious folks who are actually researching this. Not me. I am so done. My poor brain cells are fried.

P.S.- Unfortunately, the birth certificate I have for my daughter does not show the time of birth as it's a later copy and not the original one from the hospital.

But I am pretty sure that her time of birth was around 2AM. Who knows? Wouldn't it be crazy if it was at 2:22 AM?

Kudos on the appropriate choice of retro-shoe! Great job on the bedazzling!

Not 'too much' -- just enough.

Michelle.......you rock !  How creative of you.  Are these for an event?  Or daily use?

I fear for our 50th party, you may put in place some dress code requirements which may include some bedazzling of foot wear.  Or hats?  Or both?

I'm in!

I think I'll keep them nice for our 50th.  It's refreshing to have something to feel optimistic about and to look forward to after the winter we've had. Did you all see this in the news today.  More smiles!  Lane Tech Football Field Will Be Renamed For Fritz Pollard, Honoring Alum Who Was One Of First Black Pro Players (blockclubchicago.org)

Michelle,

I love them! They ROCK! So, I will need a pair to wear for our 50th get together. Let me see....okay....size 8 1/2, EEE, Hi tops with the Lane 76 logo where the All Star logo would be (by the ankle in the Hi top shoe).....and...oh yes! A white platform sole, like those easy walkers that were in style.

Whaddaya think?

So Kenny........I am online, state of Wisconsin site checking on trail conditions.  We have a lake home 30 minutes west of Green Bay and we have been snowmobilers for 40+ years.  So I am looking to see what snow conditions are to decide if it's worth going up.   A button on the site caught my eye.  It said , " What's going on in March in Wisconsin? "   Low an behold, I click and what does it say for March 4th?  Ken Ortiz birthday celebration - check your local county web site for events planned.   WTF I said.  And my wife who is a native of the state, says, " Oh sure Eddie, Ken Ortiz day.....festivals every where."   Damnnnnnn boyyyyyi.  And I thought it was just a myth.  I try to send private birthday wishes to my alum buds (as many of you know) when the site notifies me of birthdays.  But for you Senor Ortiz,,,,,,a very public happy birthday to you.  As my wife refers to you, the most prolific publisher on this forum.  She suggested you bedazzle some wicked platform shoes from the 70's.  Oh man, I recall those.

Peter........ you brought back a memory for me.  Tom F and St. Ed's.  When my family  moved to this country we landed in a Mayfair apartment for a few months and I attended Palmer then St. Ed's for a short spell before we moved to Edgebrook and Queen of all Saints/Edgebrook School.  I met Tom thru Mark McCarthy.....also a Mayfair St. Ed's family.  Small freaking world.  We too spend allot of time in Florida.  We have an ocean home in New Smryna Beach, and spend plenty of time down there.  Allot of Air Streams for sure!  I live in Park Ridge for the past 25 years and there are quite a few Lane alums here as well.

Damn, seems the more we are all separated, the more we are all linked.  Nuff said.

Happy early bithday Ken.  As we both have said in recent posts, celebrate life every day.  Life is short.  Days are precious.  yes

Peter,

That is an awesome reconnection story. I can imagine all the great stories and memories and all the catch-up news you all shared.

Ed,

Thank you so much for the early birthday wishes. I am “legit" honored (is that the right usage of that new lingo going around?). Actually, they are having a 2022 comedy festival the weekend of March 3,4 and 5 in downtown Kenosha with 16 comedians including an open mic event with some local comedians who I may know performing. But it's not in honor of my birthday, but that would be “legit fire" (more new lingo usage) if it was.

I will be down in the chi-town area over that weekend celebrating with some family and it will be celebrating multiple birthdays (including the 2/22/22 one) and other family events and it will be a more “low key" (more hip lingo) catch-up thing as some earlier family get togethers were put on hold due to illness/weather/other obligations going on. But it will still be a “groovy and far out" (not hip lingo) time.

I appreciate the “embracing each moment" because it seems that I have had a few “just walking or hanging around somewhere, minding my own business, when suddenly, I get caught up in some memorable event that I never saw coming.” I am sure some (if not all of you) have had moments like that.

And even the most mundane errand or chore I do can turn into such a memorable and fun adventure and I truly “roll with it” and with the folks involved.

For example, last week going to my local CVS store to purchase a sleep mask (hey, I HAD to take advantage of my 40% off coupon). Pretty mundane, right? Nope! By the time I was done, I got one of the CVS associates really cracking up and also, now I am obligated to showing her a certain “photo" I will be taking (next time I drop by the store) that I will also be sharing with my family on my birthday when I see them. It will definitely lead to a lot of laughs”(“big yikes” in gen Z lingo).

And, this recent event turned into a Lane Sighting:

My Mom turned 80 last November 9th. Before that, some family and I were thinking of what to do with her to celebrate. As it turns out, I heard of a swanky Vegas type show (my Mom likes anything Vegas related) that was being held at our local playhouse (the Rhode) on Saturday 11/13. And the reason I knew about it in advance was because I knew the lead singer personally and got the gist of the show and other skits they plan to do and I also knew one of the dancers personally. So we got a few of my cousins, another aunt, my sister and we rented an airbnb close by for the weekend so we can all hang out there after the show to celebrate with cake and sleep over. Also, my daughter and grandson were able to drop by the next day and hang out with all of us. And it was another of those “I told the truth, but was not believed" moments. Because, during the show, I told my mom and family that “I know that guy(lead singer), I know that girl(the tap dancer)" and of course I got the “uh-huh…sure you do" response. But I got the last laugh as my mom got a shout out for her birthday by the singer and I shared a picture with me and the singer and the dancer a couple of weeks later. So, here is where it gets to be a “sighting". Just recently, as I was hanging out with the singer at our local pub, I happened to be wearing a Lane Tech shirt. He sees it and then asks me if I went to Lane. I told him that yes I did. He then tells me that his dad went to Lane! And he went in the early 50’s! How about that for a “delayed" sighting? The next time I see him I will ask him if his dad has any mementos from Lane from that time and if so, to get me some pictures.

If you're in Chicagoland... consider eating pizza on Tueday, which is Albert G's birthday!  I'll be at the Lincoln Square location if anyone needs company for dinner and a glass of wine.  Go Lane Go!

This is a first as far as I can recall. If any Bicentennials are interested in attending, we'll have a small group at the game.  Maja?  Andrea?  Linda? Tanya?  Who am I forgetting from the very first girls soccer club? Whether you played soccer or not, no matter your gender, if you feel like coming out to cheer this amazing team, (CIty Champs the last 6 years in a row), we'll be there!

These recent In Memory posts are hard. Dave Marquart was a nice guy, and to hear he died at 32 is heart breaking.
