In Memory

Richard Tinkham

Classmates: I received this note from Jeff Zimber last Friday, April 22.

Sue,
I just got a call from Bill Whitehurst with some bad news. Our friend Dick Tinkham died this morning. Dick had a tough time with health issues for a year or so. So sad to think of him not with us. I think it’s just something we all need to get used to as the years pass by.

I am so sad to hear about Dick.He was such friend. He and I co-chaired the Soph. Homecoming float only to be elimanated because classmates were smoking on the back of the float. He also was in our accident on Sheridan rd.Just thinking of him and a smile comes to my face. Ginny Viezbicke Walker. ginnyvkw63@gmail.com

What a happy, upbeat guy! He was a big presence in our class, what a great smile!, and a really good man. So sad to hear this news,

I didn't know Dick other than his being one of my classmates, but I do remember him being in a few of my classes during my four years at New Trier. He was always a happy, upbeat young man and very popular. It's always tough to hear about the passing of one of our classmates, and I know he'll be missed a great deal. R.I.P., Dick...

I am so saddened to learn of Dick’s passing. It’s too soon, just too soon. Dick was always great fun to be with and we surely had plenty of laughs together.  We visited in Denver once and had a ball. Dick was one of those guys that was always looking for an opportunity to smile about something which I appreciated very much!  We didn’t spend much time together these last years, but my sense of sadness is huge.

Many happy memories skiing at Winter Park with Dick - what a fun guy! He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

Debbie/Winnie - do you know any of Dick's family that might want to have these kind comments from Dick's classmates??

Thanks,

I was very fortunate to be close to and spend time with Dick during his long, nine year, battle with leukemia. Even during some of his worst days he absoutely loved sharing memories of his special times at NTHS. Dick amazingly kept his wry smile, twinkle in his eyes, and sense of humor right to the end. You're already being missed "Tink".

Dick was one of those people who made everyone he was around feel special. I am so sorry to learn that he has passed away. I vividly remember his wonderful smile and sense of humor.

Since NT was so big,I didn't know Tink well. But every time we saw each other he said hi, and he made some sort of pleasant comment. I guess I knew him well after all.

On this day of celebrating Dick’s life I remember him as a kind, funny, and very solid friend.  During NTHS time and thereafter we had a ball sharing all sorts of activities or just “driving around”.  I also fondly remember many days just hanging out at his house enjoying being with Dick, his parents, and sister Pat.  It was always a comfortable atmosphere filled with joking and laughter.  As others have said Dick always had a smile and kind word for others – he made you feel happy being around him.

In our later years we were unfortunately separated by geography.  However, a few enjoyable phone calls always left me with good feelings and lasting fond memories.  After his long suffering I am happy inside remembering his smiling face and knowing he is now at rest.

Thank you to others who have contributed their thoughts in this forum – even in his passing Tink brings us together and makes us smile.
