The two sides of Ron. A quiet, laid back guy who kept his counsel. He was also a gifted athlete. Lettered three years as a Varsity Wrestler. Opponents knew he meant business when they faced each other on the mat. Watching Ron engaged in a match was to see dedication, stamina and a huge desire to dominate and win. Chula Vista High was fortunate to have someone of Ron's caliber on the Greatest Wrestling Team!
Ron is survived by his wife, Tommie Lynn Boal (Hilltop '65). Ron and Tommie Lynn were married in 1972. They have a daughter, Jennifer (1979) and a son, Ron (1980).

Ron and I had Senior English with Mr. Wall. We sat side by side, 2nd seats from the front. This was the year we studied "Beowulf". You may recall "Grendel" was the evil or spirit of darkness and terror. In other words a monster. Some male classmates thought it funny to call me Grendel (ahem, Breakfield). It caused a great many chuckles. However, Ron never seemed to take part in the teasing or laughing. That was Ron. All the years I knew him he was always a bit distant. Never unfriendly, but quiet.
One Monday as I was getting my books out Ron came to class wearing a huge smile. He sat down and, I think, was humming! As usual, my mouth engaged before my brain woke up, and I said "what are you so happy about". He looked right at me and said "I met the girl of my dreams this weekend" Do I know her? No, he said, she goes to Hilltop and her name is Tommie. End of discussion and never mentioned again.
Not until recently did I hear he married Tommie Lynn in 1972. They had a daughter, Jennifer, in 1979 and a son, Ron, in 1980. When I read that news.....the old memory popped into my head. He really DID meet the girl of his dreams. Lucky man. Lucky woman.
I also watched several wrestling meets. Watched Ron and was startled by his determination and ability. He was a great one on the mats Today if you look up great California high school wrestlers from the 1960's two names come out: Ron Batty and Roy Hahn. Really! Look it up. 8/3/2013 Received a note from Tommie Lynn Batty. She gave me a couple of corrections. She also said Ron was a wonderful friend, husband and father. She said she was indeed a lucky woman to have had Ron in her life.
