Sadly, today we received word of Chuck Wischstadt's passing on August 28, 2102. Dennis Mason spoke with Chuck's parents to confirm his death.
After graduation from Chula Vista High Chuck joined the US Navy in 1965.
Chuck was stationed at China Lake and also served a tour of duty in Vietnam. He was an AM53 3rd Class. Translated: Aviation Structural Mechanic. One of the guys who make sure our pilots are flying safe airplanes. Thank you, Chuck!
He is survived by two adult sons; Brian and Gary Von Wischstadt. Chuck was married to Ana Wischstadt and she survives him. (The info re: Ana came from Cheryl Soto via email)
Chuck lived in Imperial Beach at the time of his death. He is buried at Ft. Rosecrans National Cemetary, Pt. Loma. As more information becomes available we will share it.

When I first moved to Chula Vista in 1958, I was good friends with Chuck Wischstadt. We had a 14' outboard boat that, along with my Father, Chuck and I drove around San Diego Bay. See the pictures below of Chuck on the boat and in front of the Coronado Boat House.
Chuck and I also tried making special effects 8mm movies. I have included a YouTube of a portion of these. The first part of the video shows me, Chuck and Chuck's younger brother Curt (who, sadly, also passed away a few years ago).
Unfortunately when Chuck and I went to different junior and senior high schools we did not hang around much anymore. I did see him on occasion with the Live Steamers at Rohr park.
This is an updated YouTube of the movie that Chuck and I made:

Thanks George. Nice memories of Chuck. He was in my homeroom. I'm sor sorry that he left us so early in life.

Thank you George for the work you put into the video. The Wischstadt's were neighbors of mine on Elder from 1950-1959, part of the kids who played out on Elder until dark on warm summer eves. Red light/green light, Mother may I, hide and seek and others I don't remember (Dennis?). We had over 25 kids to play with on our block. No fear of being kidnapped. Dennis Mason and Barbara Thomas also on Elder then. Pat Sloan moved in later. Chuck's Dad was very into trains. Great memories.

Thanks for the memories, George. I knew Chuck at Rice Elementary for grades 5 & 6. Also, a love of my life, Wayne Richards, shared scouting activities with Chuck. Their dads were Scout Masters for their troop at First Presbyterian church and they were both Eagle Scouts, climbed Mt. Whitney, backpacked hundreds of miles, worked at camps, etc. Linda Keating was also at Rice & I knew her well. Can't remember if Marcia Durrant was also at Rice, but I knew her at Castle Park Junior. Again, thanks for sharing the memories.

Doreen, I remember you from 7th grade at Castle Park JHS. I went to Hilltop JHS for 8th and 9th grades then to Hilltop High.
I was also in the scout troop (troop 825) at the Presbyterian church. Chuck, Wayne and I were in the same patrol--The Eagle Patrol. Wayne's dad was the scoutmaster and Chuck's dad an assistant scoutmaster.
Linda Keating was a neighbor on Del Mar Ave when we first moved to Chula Vista. I have been in contact with her since these classcreator sites started. My wife, Pam, and I had a lunch with her recently. It was great talking about old times. She also went to HHS.

George please say hello to Linda the next time you see her. I know we spoke at a reunion but that must have been at least 20 years ago! Your rememberances of Chuck and Jean were so nicely done. Thank you. I've tried several times to write something about Wayne but even after eight years I just can't get the right words out. Still miss him every day. I didn't know you were in that same BSA troop; he had great memories of all your adventures - entertained me with them many times!
Judy, fun to see the trains! I remember going to Rohr Park when they were running. Didn't know they had a train layout in the back yard!
