Hi oops-hee hee(Hello)-
Sue I wrote about a "Mrs. Geiser" event. Also, Mr. Hoker (social studies)kept a "bottle" in his lower side desk drawer but did not share.
Anyone remember the gym teacher Miss Hult (I think that was her name)-whoa what gender was she really?

I remember being told that Roosevelt was named after Teddy. It was built decades before Franklin's time.

My husband and I house-sat for and subsequently lived with Frank Wiley's daughter and her husband (Jean and Abe Zwickle) for a couple of month in the 70's. At the time, Jean was in her 60s-70s and Abe was in his 80s. Jean told me that her father had once been the superintendent - maybe the first superintendent of CH schools. I don't remember more detail.

My mother went to Monticello. She always told me it was named after Jefferson's home. I don't know more detail than that either.

Shelley - I did my research on the web. Here are your answers. Roosevelt was actually named for Kermit Roosevelt who was Teddy Roosevelt's son and appeared on the Height's stage in 1926. He was responsible for many programs and assemblies. Anne is correct that Wiley was named for Frank L. Wiley who was the superintendent responsible for Heights' new bulding in 1926 and stadium in 1927. That is the Heights we went to. The first superintendent was Charles Tilden in 1903. Terri is right that Roxboro was named for the street it is located on. So was Monticello. The street Monticello was named for Jefferson's home. Here is cool link for those that want to know more of the History of Heights High. Just cut and paste it in your browsers.

Wow - Sue Bruder Wold is really responsive. She has posted this link on the main page so everyone can see the whole history of Heights High. Great Work Sue!!

According to the Jefferson Encyclopedia the name should be pronounced "Monti-CELLO" as in the musical instrument. The word Monticello means "little mountain" in Italian, and records indicate that Jefferson would have used the Italian pronunciation. While the word has been pronounced "Monti-SELLO" elsewhere in America there are no records indicating that way is correct. See the following link for more info.

Nadelane Joseph (Joseph)

Hi all,

Val just posted 2 class photos on the site (see photo albums) that I sent her from Northwood. Does anyone know who the girl on the left is doing the little curtsey thing? I know I know her but can't come up with a name. I'm the other little girl doing the goofy pose in that row. I think the photographer must have told us to ham it up b/c I don't have any other pictures of myself doing that!

Speaking of pictures!

It is amazing that you can look at a picture that you are NOT in and identify who those people are....because they still looked like that in high school.

Sue Bruder (Wold)

Nadelane, i'm not sure, it might be Ava Cassier.
I used to have many Northwood pictures, but i cant seem to find them since i've moved.

Sue, I'm pretty sure I have other Northwood and Belvoir pictures (I went to both -half and half) but they weren't where I thought they were when I looked. I will investigate and find them. I don't think that's Ava Cassier but since her father was a photographer it would make sense that she'd pose. So, maybe it is. We'll see if anyone else weighs in.

Joel. Was Mr. Nemestol the shop teacher that used to say, "Young people, it's later than you think" ? That used to drive me crazy. I was in his homeroom. Unless there were 2 shop teachers - I didn't remember that was his name.

Nadelane,

Sue,

I can scan the pictures.

Nadelane,

There was another shop teacher. I recall that Mr. Nemestol taught drafting and the other teacher taught wood shop. I made some great ashtrays.

I have some old black & white pictures in my photo album that I took at 6th grade graduation at Canterbury. If I can get my neighbor to scan them... very classic
In the picture: Ann & Ava Schwartz, Terrie Lurie, Lesley Corwin, Sherie Speser, Janis Cline, Debbie Miller, and our 6th grade teacher Mrs Liggitt. Would love to share..if I can figure out how to get copies & send to the website...

Great job Mitch and Bill for the research!
I'm glad that you had the groups that you did in Cleveland. There was a pro-Palestinian demonstration in downtown Wilmington a couple of days ago and a large pro-Israel gathering in Charlotte yesterday. Some of my Hadassah peers are beginning to organize a pro-Israel demonstration here in Wilmington.
I have some Taylor School class photos. How do I scan them in with my HP scanner? I also need to know how to scan photos in so they aren't real grainy. What am I doing wrong?

01/13/09 01:19 AM #227

Val Iberall (O'Connor)

Sheryl, if you or anyone else have any pictures for the Photo Album page, email them to me at magnumpi95@bellsouth.net. If anyone has photos that they can't get scanned in, email me and I'll give you my address and you can mail them to me and I'll mail them back to you. Any elementary photo, jr. high, reunion pics, whatever. Val

Anne

I lived directly behind you on E.Overlook, so my guess is that I am in some of those Taylor pictures. Allison Krause who died too young, at Kent State is going to be those pictures as well.

Thanks Kenny - that's who it was - Mr. Stiller!

funny how things from 40 years ago or more seem to pop up so quickly, but yesterday or last week seems so hazy. anyone else suffer this affliction? i guess we become our parents!

01/13/09 09:57 AM #231

Bonnie Hirsch (Lauer)

Kenny

I remember my parents repeatedly asking what day of the week it is. Now I understand why they were asking! Time goes by very quickly....that is why you have to make the most of everyday

Mitch...

I forgot about the hot dog cooker! That was pretty crazy. My folks still have the pen holder we made out of wood (cherry, maybe?), and that triangular-shaped, three-legged candy dish thing we had to hammer out of brass.

01/13/09 01:32 PM #233

Bonnie Hirsch (Lauer)

To all the Northwood people....I do wish that the names of those people that attended the reunion were listed....because I can not figure out who anyone is.
