Yepper the bugs had problems....and this is the last year of the new bug which did not have the same "fun" factor..... I would suggest the smart car but 20,000 bucks for a 2 seater??? we are not that nuts....
(remember the beetle ads that said 1999.00 out the door?)

Beth Nehamkin

Steve, I just saw a vintage ad for the VW Bug that was exactly what you wrote. ' $1999.00 and out the door.'

Sandy, your bug is awesome and I loved driving it last summer!!

Any other bug lovers ??????? There has to be hundreds of us!!

Anyone remember the VW ad in National Lampoon that had a VW floating in water and it said 'If Ted Kennedy had driven a Volkswagen, he's be president today.'

VW threatened to sue and they had to destroy the plates. But I do have a copy of the ad!

VW did a series of ads with the car floating for real... I remember a priest in canada in one....I once drove the car into a snow dift and because the bottom was solid the car went up and down it like a sled.....

One of my favorites was from a Mad magazine.....Some really big guys coming out of 18 wheelers saying to each other...let's scrape the bugs off of the windshield. Yup, they scraped VW's...It was cartoon style!! I loved it!!

Steven and Terri, that is a riot!! I'd love to see the Ted Kennedy ad.

Michael (Slate) and I had a red VW. We got married in '74 and he aleady had it for years so it could possibly be from the late '60's or earlier '70's. It was a great car, my first, learned the stick shift on it, never used the shift again though. But since then with all my automatics over the years, I drive with two feet because of it, I never learned how to drive with one foot for both the gas and brake. Oh well, it works for me. That car never gave us any problems from what I can recall. I don't remember it not having heat. But then again, who remembers anything from way back then. I love the new vw's, they are adorable. I sat in a smart car, loved it, but there's no way I could get my bloodhound in there! It's still freezing down here. They say it's going to warm up this weekend, we'll see. I've been taking a poll on how high up or if at all people turn their heaters on to. A lot are afraid to turn them on at all, the cost is going to be outrageous. Some people don't even have heaters. Others say they have sick family members and they go all the way up to 80. They are going to pay out of their teeth. Most keep it down to middle 60's to low 70's. It's such an enigma to even turn it on down here, I guess it's whatever a person can stand. The stores ran out of space heaters the first few days.

and coming soon to the car port near you...electic cars with long very long cords......

01/14/10 04:51 PM #3317

Beth Nehamkin

Val,

You are so right on about turning the heat on or not. Florida Power and Light indicated it will cost $1.50-$1.65 to run the heat each hour. I have had mine set at 63 degrees through all of this cold weather. I dread my bill next month!! Air conditioning runs between 45 -50 cents an hour. Go figure!!

I have seen those Smart Cars and despite loving my 2 bugs, the Smart car looks too small for me. Also, like Val, I have two huge dogs that would never want to get into it even if they could. I haul them around in my RAV 4.

I look forward to the days of electric cars, retirement and winning the Florida Lottery..SURE!!

Thanks Terri, I will definetly check out the web site you posted.

Where or where did Louie go?????????????

Terri Morris (Balchen)

I first saw the Smart Car in Milan. Loved them but look like death traps.

The Bug is scary enough on I-75 at Malfunction Junction.
Take the curve down and up and around at 70 mph is a real trip!

01/15/10 07:29 AM #3319

Beth Nehamkin

Terri,

Is it like Dead Man's Curve in downtown Cleveland?? We have several here to. Those crazy 'flyovers' they are building everywhere here in Fort Myers.

Also, I tried the site you gave me and couldn't access it. Thanks anyway.

Val Iberall (O'Connor)

Beth, here is that article that you couldn't open up from Terri: (there's more comments from other people afterwards but I didn't print them)

April 08, 2004
Ted Kennedy, A National Joke for Twenty-five Years.
National Lampoon began publishing in the '70's; this was an early offering. It's still a beauty.

If Ted Kennedy drove a Volkswagen,
he'd be President today

It floats.

The way our body is built, we'd be surprised if it didn't. The sheet of flat steel that goes underneath every Volkswagen keeps out water, as well as dirt and salt and other nasty things that can eat away at the underside of a car. So it's watertight at the bottom. And everybody knows it's easier to shut the door on a Volkswagen after you've rolled down the window a little.

That proves it's practically airtight on top. If it was a boat, we could call it the Water Bug. But it's not a boat, it's a car.

And, like Mary Jo Kopechne, it's only 99 and 44/100 percent pure. So it won't stay afloat forever. Just long enough. Poor Teddy. If he'd been smart enough to buy a Volkswagen, he never would have gotten into hot water.

When a law suit was threatened by VW, National Lampoon ran the following retraction:

"Even if Ted Kennedy had driven a Volkswagen he wouldn't be president today."

Louie,

WHEW!! So glad to know you are not under a snow bank!! Try to defrost those essential parts that may be frozen!! Spring is only 3 months away!!! I see it is about 35 in Cleveland this morning..break out the suntan lotion!!

We are finally getting past our Canadian winter air experience. Yet another reminder why I am glad not to be in Cleveland where parts freeze for months at a time.

it is bad enough to shovel the driveway i have to shovel the lawn for the 2 girls

01/15/10 04:42 PM #3324

Beth Nehamkin

Louie,

I remember well needing to have the driveway plowed so the dog could go out. In the blizzard of '78(?) my German Shepherd was frozen in the back yard because the hair between his paws froze!! Ahhhh, the memories of Cleveland winters!! How is the new grandson? the 'little crapper'

01/15/10 06:44 PM #3325

Terri Morris (Balchen)

Beth, it is where I-75 splits off from I-4 in Tampa. If you stay on I-75, you go down, around and up again.

I drove it alot when I did my externship at Moffitt Cancer Center and then when I go to the Renaissance Faire in Tampa.

I left for work at 6:40 bundled up and came out at 5:30 and no coat needed!
What a wonderful feeling again!

I've been down here so long I hardly remember Cleveland Heights anymore. Haven't been back since 1974.

01/15/10 07:44 PM #3326

Beth Nehamkin

Terri,

You have been here longer than me. I arrived in March '87. I remember walking out of the house and seeing blue skies, palm trees and sunshine on that day. AWESOME and still is and you are right..the warm air feels good again.

Val,

Thanks, I am going to try and get to the website again...I REALLY appreciate you typing it out for me!!

01/15/10 09:00 PM #3327

Terri Morris (Balchen)

I moved down here in 1971, saw lots of changes. My husband has been here since 1956!
My family is all down here and no reason to go back to Cleveland.

The only thing I miss about Cleveland Heights is the restaurants. Best corned beef was at Goodman's deli on Kinsman Road.
Amster's Bagels...Manners Big Boy....Geraci's..

01/15/10 10:03 PM #3328

Val Iberall (O'Connor)

Beth, I didn't type it! I copied and pasted it...I didn't add the picture of the VW floating though..

01/16/10 11:12 AM #3329

Beth Nehamkin

Val,

Again, thanks!!

Terri, you are so right about the good resturants in Cleveland. You mentioned Manners and who could forget the 'Big Boy sauce?' I hear there are places in Cleveland where it can still be found. Also, my grandmother lived at Kinsman and Lee for many years, I think I remember the deli. MANY great places to eat. I STILL go to Tommy's when I am there.

There is always a trade off when moving. I do like it here now but it took me quite a while to really get used to being in a place where I knew no one except one person living here from Cleveland and didn't have any history. I have been here 23 years now and while I am entrenched, Cleveland is still 'home' even though I could not go back.

01/17/10 09:37 AM #3330

Terri Morris (Balchen)

Beth, ever since I moved here it felt like HOME.
Sadly, Cleveland never did and I was born there.
If I had my choice though, New Orleans is REALLY home. My family had been there longer than dirt and had a house on St Louis Street in the Quarter.

The biggest plus here is the sun.

01/17/10 08:17 PM #3331

Shelley Hornik (Lloyd)

Well...Florida folks (and other southerners...), your temps are moving back UP. It looks like the weather is on the upswing there. In the meantime, we're supposed to get 5-8 inches of snow before tomorrow morning here in CT. BUT I hear it did NOT snow in Cleveland today.

01/17/10 08:54 PM #3332

Sue Bruder (Wold)

the weather has been good her the past week and it is supposed to be in the 30-40 this week. most of our 2 feet of snow is melted. But remember winter isn't over yet.
