Terri, If I'm not mistaken, Dr. Bell was a former physical education teacher. Our PE teachers NOW do so much more in terms of health education and general wellness than the teachers WE all endured. When Dr. Bell would NOT even discuss switching my math teacher, I remember saying to myself "terrific...a former PE teacher making this decision". I wasn't smart enough to go to the Unit Principal, not that it would have helped.

Did they really think having Miss Hunting for TWO years was going to service anyone well? If I had continued Algebra 2, I probably would have failed the next course anyway. I didn't learn a THING from Miss Hunting...and it wasn't from MY lack of trying.

Mr Gordon was truely remarkable-i remember eating at Mawby's(cedar center)when the check came i didn't have enough money(typical 13yr. old) this nice man paid my bill and told me to do the same for someone else!well, needless to say i still do that for others whenever i can. our senior year he was my math teacher(virtually blind)and one day he asked me if i still go to mawby's--he said he still remembered me from that day and knew that our paths would cross again!

Terri,
Everyone must've wanted out of Fabian's class. I got lucky and got out second semester of 8th grade. I assume my mom called Dr. Bell. And guess what, today I can't sew unless it's putting on a button or a hem. You may have been the lucky one, not me.

Mr. Rutan at Roosevelt did us a favor.... Most Americans do not know what county is on the otherside of Lake Erie...Because of him we do... It is Mexico :)
What I hated was that he made us stay after school so he could give us oral exams where he pointed at a map and we had to tell him what it was....

Last year I did call MR Fusco (art). He is living in Middlefield and sounds the same....

The other day I was having lunch with my ex-mother-in-law, Mike Slate's mom, and we were sitting down in her livingroom talking and I was telling her about this site, and I looked down at the coffee table and saw a book called "Cleveland Food Memories" and I thought this would be a nice book to share with you all so I asked her if I could borrow it. So I just scanned a whole bunch of pages in and they are now on the bottom of the Video Corner and Memorabilia Page so check it out. There had been a lot of food talk here on the message forum recently and you may see some pictures and descriptions of things you remember there. One thing I remember big time was (now that I read it in this book I know where my memory is from) in the basement of Higbees there was a frosty machine and I used to love their chocolate frosties. I was so young I really didn't remember where that memory was from. It's a very cool book.

Growing up, we took the Rapid Transit from Windermere, downtown and no matter what time we arrived we stopped at that counter to have a frosty. You had to pass it to get to the escelators......great location!

Val,
You are filling my head up with so many memories that the new stuff isn't staying in anymore! I remember almost every place you scanned in, and I remember them all fondly.

I wish I'd known about the Manners strawberry pie glaze years ago. I would've stockpiled it for sure. I tried for a long time to duplicate that glaze and I never got it right. I even just now tried googling the company, (Pratt and Web pie company) but if they exist they don't have an internet presence.

Hey Northwood people! There is a 1st grade, two 3rd grades, two 5th grades and one 6th grade that don't have names under them on the Photo Albums Page. Please if you went to that school, see if you know anyone and email me the names. I need them to do the Then and Now Page. Thank you!

Remember:
The ease with which we hopped on a 32 bus down Cedar to University Circle and then picked up the Rapid to go downtown?
... and we were 10,12,14 years old at the time?
... to go ice skating downtown? (Did they close that rink?)
What about when they used to fill up Cumberland's parking lot with water in the winter so we could skate?

Addendum: I had just awakened to read Bonnie's note and wrote this.
By the time this was posted, you guys were talking about the food book. I just looked at the book. Oh my gosh!!!!

Do you remember Uncle Marty's ice cream truck?

Sandie,

My dad used to take us kids to the ice skating rink downtown every weekend. We loved it! I thought I'd remember how to skate until my husband took me skating a few years back and I fell down and he said NEVER will we ever go skating again! So much for trying to relive great memories!

Sue,
You're right. There are Big Boys (OMG, what a name) around and I should stop in ask them what brand they now use. There's even one near BGSU where my daughter goes to school. If I ever find out, I'll invite you over for pie.

We're still talking about food?! The pictures from Val's book sure brought up some memories! I remember going to Capt. Frank's restaurant downtown on the lake as a little kid. While we waited for our table, we would get free boat rides in his speedboat. A fun time with great food, too! I also noticed Tip Top Bread in Ward Baking Co. I worked there every summer after college, down on Chester. They probably put me thru school. It turned out to be a rather disgusting place to work. (They are closed now, I think.) The bakers who worked in the ovens at the top floor were the grossest people, all worked bear chested with hair falling all over. I do remember we were cited for "too many creatures" baked in the bread. The oven room had no screens with birds flying all over. So, for all you consumers of Tip Top Bread, consider yourself fortunate that you're still alive! (I wonder if they can sue me at this point....)

Even as a small child, I was not a fan of cold weather, so my dad, schlepped me to skate every Saturday at the Arena. I had a little black skating skirt and thought I was very cool.
