Since my boyfriend and I ate at Manners every Sunday after his baseball game, I was an expert on the strawberry pie. We lived on it!

This recipe tastes pretty darn close--

STRAWBERRY PIE

1 baked 9" pie crust shell
1 cup sugar
3 pints of strawberries, washed and hulled
3 1/2 Tablespoon cornstarch
1/2 cup water
red food colouring
whipped cream

Mash one pint of strawberries. Mix sugar and cornstarch in a 3-qt saucepan. Stir in water and mashed berries. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until the mixture comes to a boil and boil for two minutes. Remove from heat, stir in a few drops of red food colouring. Cool.
Fold in two pints of berries into the cooled mixture. Pile into a baked pie shell.
Chill and serve with lots of whipped cream.

chocolate frosties = 2 words....
Brain Freeze.... There is a place on the westside who claims to have one of the machines from Higbees.... I forget where.... For those living outside Cleveland.... you do not need a passport to go to the westside anymore...
Manners for me = french fry mushrooms.....

Speaking about the Frosty Malts at Higbee's, Weber's Ice Cream on Mentor Avenue in Mentor opened a few years ago. They claim to have the original recipe of the Frosty Malt. They also feature quite a bit of memorabilia from Euclid Beach Park. You could spend an hour just looking at the pictures and reading the write-up's all over the store.

I will also confirm Canterbury students went to Roxboro JH and Wiley.

I'll add my Happy Birthday to Jim Samuels - have a great day.

I was catching up on the message forum this a.m. - I've missed quite a few days. Lots of very heavy nostalgia.

My love to all.

I just added to the bottom of the Video Corner/Memorabilia Page.....RECIPES that you have submitted on this message forum. I only went back so far, when I have time I will continue to go backwards. So the recipes will be in one place and you won't have to go searching for them. Also, under Recipes, I put LINKS to some of the places we have been talking about where you can go to order different food items, like Davis Bakery, Humphrey's, Corky's, and Weber's.

You can get a Frosted Malt from Higbee's at Honey Hut Ice Cream, the one right off of State Rd in Cleveland. This is the one that has the machine, the only one. If you are on I-480 going West, you get off at State Rd, go right and it is about a mile down the road on the left hand side. You'll see the sign. It's as close to the real thing as you can get! We go there often- my hubby always needs a fix. It's better than Weber's - Weber's is ice cream, not a true frosty malt.

No one mentioned Hough Bakery! That's what I miss- their cookies, cakes, and petits fors! There is a bakery in Cleveland on Lake Shore Dr, just off the shoreway, called Archie's. He was one of the master bakers from Hough's and has all of the recipes. We go there for holidays and birthdays - you need to order though, he doesn't make anything except special orders. It's the best!

There are still a few Big Boy restauarnts in the area- Streetsboro, Valley View, and Stow. So, all mostly South, but I think the Strawberry and pumpkin pie tastes the same...nice to know there are a few things that don't change.

I just got off the phone with the owner of Weber's and he said he has the ORIGINAL machine that produces the custards and that is why his custards taste so good. He said that machines that came out since then are made out of stainless steel that alters the taste of foods. He said that when everyone comes to town for the reunion in October he will be open and will be there to serve everyone his famous custards so stop in his store. He said he has the original Vanilla Custard also.

Happy Birthday to Jim! And a big thank you for the strawberry pie recipe. Now I'm just waiting until strawberry season here when I can pick my own!

He also has one at the original Weber's on Lorain Rd - but it's ice cream. I've had it several times. It's very good, but the frosted malted at Higbee's was drinkable- that's the one that Honey Hut has. You would lift the glass and it would tip your nose, and leave a "mustache" on you. That one was the best-the one at May Co was more "chocolatey."

I also want to wish Jim a Happy BD.

Maybe we should just have Weber's and Honey Hut each set up a stand at the reunion!! I know Dippin Dots has one at our HS football games. Although none of us should be eating that stuff anymore.

I remember Manners Big Bog and the Big Boy Dough Boy- either outside the restaurant or just inside the door. There is a Big Boy near Kent, Ohio. I've passed it several times.
Does anyone remember the restaurant across from Heights that we use to go to to get French Fries with brown gravy poured all over them. We use to go on our lunch hour. I think we called them "wets". Why, I don't know.
I also remember Mawby's. I taught with the owners wife. What an eye opener. I also remember someone getting the tip of his finger getting cut off in the meat cutter. Whew!!!

Jim, how neat, we are getting younger.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

02/26/09 09:42 PM #648

Terri Morris (Balchen)

Harla, I do believe that was Inman's Restaurant.

And for my junior and senior year, six of us ate at Mawby's every day.

Scott Poffenberger (Poffenberger)

Ahhh ... Mawby's... I ate two "grilled dills" there every day during junior year. I remember Bill (the grillman) and a blonde server w/ impossibly tall hair behind the counter... Anyone remember her name? She was actually quite pretty.

Then in senior year I got turned on to Hirschs' Deli on the west side of Lee near Kensington. Mrs. Hirsch sold these outrageously good hot dogs ("mit skins"). The closest I've had since are Nathan's... but I still remember Hirschs'. I love to cook and love a great restaurant (and a great wine list) but the older I get, the more I appreciate simplicity, freshness and quality in my food. God bless you, Mrs. Hirsch!

Trivia question for my observant friends... I was always under the impression that Kosher meats had to come from the front of the cow or steer. Therefore, natural casing dogs cannot be Kosher... right?

I also remember a Chinese restaurant across the street from Heights. The waiter would take our orders, never write anything down and still remember who ordered what dish and delivered it to the right person. Only 1 person in our group ordered a hamburger & fries. I guess that was when we still were allowed to go off campus for lunch.
Was there a Chinese restaurant, or did I imagine it?

Scott Poffenberger (Poffenberger)

You're right, Sheryl... I remember two... The "New Moon" was south of HHS on Cedar and "Chin's Pagoda" was west of HHS on Lee...

Speaking of...I just put on a bunch of new Fairfax and Oxford class photos tonight. I need names so look at any elementary school picture that don't have any names at all and email me a list of them, top row first, left to right, and leave question marks for who you don't know. Otherwise just tell me who the question marks are. I have a list of 50 names that are now on the Then and Now Page who I don't know what elementary school or jr high they went to so I can't match them up with any photos. If anyone knows where any of these people went to school let me know. Also, if anyone has any good old recipes that you want to share with everyone, I'll put them on the bottom of the Video Corner page along with the rest of them. Thanks everyone for your input!

OK...what was the name of the place near the corner of Mayfield and Warrensville that had the car hop? Was that a Manners...or another restaurant? I remember going there in elementary school, and junior high and eating IN the car (and that was a good idea...why???). I wanted to BE a car hop (why????) but they were discontinued before I was old enough to do it.
