The girls used to call Terry,"Teddy Bear". That was because he was so well padded with muscle. But he was also an excellent student(honor student I think). During scrimages Terry would frequently be across from me. I only weighed about 130. He weighed 170. His forearm shiver would lift me off the ground! Terry was elected to the All Colorado Football Squad. He was also the captain of the wrestling squad, and a darned good one. Our squad didn't do that well in the league. But Terry took the State championship at 160 pounds! Suspect that if we underclassmen had a hero, it was Hostetter.

Would like to know how such an excellent person died.
Someone said that he loved his wife very much, and that after she died . . . he passed soon after. Anyone know more?

I was told Terry died from a brain tumor.  I have no way to verify that though.

I was told this at the class reunion in 1998:

Terry died of a broken heart after his wife died when a car they were working on fell off a jack onto her. He blamed himself for not securing the jack and went into a deep depression. He was never able to enjoy life again and may have taken his own life. What a waste.

I remember my classmate Terry Hostetter very well.  A great football player -- he made Varsity 1st String right off the bat as a sophomore, & was All-Conference for two or three years, and All-State at least one year, as I recall.  Offensive guard, defensive middle guard, an aggressive hustler on the field and the nicest guy in the world off the field.  Whatever the circumstances of his death, he was way too young.

Terry was a great person, footballer and scholar. If I remeber correctly he had a few dates with my sister, Marrin. I had the pleasure of having him as a teammate on our state championship football team. We played that game in La Junta which was the home team owing to their undefeated season. We had lost one game early in the season when 1/2 the team was sidelined with the flu. Coach Mondt had received permission to have the game in Falcon Stadium, but La Junta opted to play the game at home. Coach made a rather harsh statement (as I recall) that we would be victorious if they would provide a dry field. When we arrived on game day the the filed was so dry that there was almost no grass and it has almost as hard as concrete. Wearing cleats was not possible so coach told us to just wear the shoes we had on when we left the bus. Terry had his usual outstanding game. In fact La Junta did not score against our defense which was lead by Terry. The circimstances of his death were tragic, he was a terrific role model for all of us.

Terry was also an all state wrestler. He was in the 154 lb weight class that year, as I recall. He was one of coach Lindsenmier's (sp) favorite wrestlers in 1962-63 season, along with Bruce Ward at heavy weight (170 lb) who was state champion in his weight class.
