First (puppy) love of my life. I'm pretty sure everyone but her knew that. I worked at Carvel with her. In fact, she's the only reason I worked there at all. That girl was 100% beautiful inside & out.

I can still see her Jeep, all Grey and Pink with "THINK PINK" on the tire cover in back. Her mother said that when Christie was getting her wings, her first question would be: Can I get these in pink?

She was always in at least one class every year and since our last names were one letter apart she was either behind or in front of me. She always had a smile(and her homework). I think of her everytime I am at any amusement park and will not or ever allow my kids to ride any "octopus/spider" ride. When they ask my why, I just tell them "someone I knew was taken too soon"!!! I always felt untouchable until that night at the fair, nothing like a good slap in the face to remind you that you are mortal!!! Life is full of lessons and the loss of such a beautiful person makes us realize we need to treasure every minute with the people we love.

Well said Tracy. I do the same with my kids. I have shown them her picture and taken them by the park named after her close to her house. I have told them the type of person she was and how much we all miss her and think of her. I even told them when they see a rainbow that it is her smiling at us!!

I have told my children the same thing Janet. She is someone that none of us will ever forget.

I met Christie when I moved to CC in the 3rd grade and we lived down the street from each other, so there are lots of memories.
The fondest ones where going to her house for slumber parties (probably during elementary/middle school). One night we pulled out the Wigi Board and needless to say it got a little silly.
We also worked together at Carvel, one night we got into the biggest (fun) ice cream fight while we were closing. OMG- the owner would've had a fit if he'd seen his store, there was fudge & butterscotch all over the walls. It took me hours to get the marshmallow & coconut out of my hair.
Then there were all the softball games together playing for the optimist; in the middle of a game one night (in Lantana) out of nowhere giant palmetto bugs rained down on us it was so disgusting!

I think of Christie often........

I met Christie somewhere around 3rd or 4th grade and I remember being jealous because she got to be in safety patrol and I didn't. She was a truly beautiful person inside and out. Do you guys remember the park naming ceremony where we let go all the pink balloons? Several years later when I was at the fair with my son struggling to convince him that it was not safe to go on the rides a little blonde headed girl walked by with a bunch of pink balloons. I started to cry...

It's hard to believe it's been 20 years ago today I lost one of the best friends I've ever had. I was lucky enough to have so many memories during the many years we were friends.

I think of her often.

I pray to Christie every few nights. I still go by and talk w/ her mom Sussie Shaffle Dickinson, who is now happlie married a few years after chuck Shaffle died of an anerism. I remeber I would plant pink flowers at the Christie Shaffle park every year. I spoke to her, Sussie, a few weeks ago, and she asked me "do you think people will forget about her, Karen?" WOW!!! I gave her a hug and said "no, absolutly not!" It just makes your heart ace. Our fathers were on the softball leaque and were our choaches for 1 year, one day at practice, (softball practice) I was up to bat, and Christie was pitching. Anyways I hit a ball right at her (not on purpose!!!) and gave her a bloody lip. We would have sleepovers at her house, swim in front of her house in the lake, but sadly as close as we were when we were young, we grew apart in high school. I am happy to say I am as close as ever to Sussie. I stop by her house in Temberlake, Fl. at least once a month. I am sighned on to this site at the bottom of the "profiles" page. Write me a note to sussie, and I will relay it to her. She will be happy to hear from you. Karen Payne
