I have vivid memories of getting polio shots in the gym, and it must have been second grade.  Remember, the Salk vaccine was a series of three shots, and we had a few wimpy classmates who wore slings on their "shot arms" the next day.  Later when the oral polio vaccine came along, my mother made us take it too.
