Since graduating from Davidson, I completed my M.A. in English at Chapel Hill, got married, and taught high school English in Aiken, S.C., for two years. I completed my Ph.D. in English at the University of South Carolina, with a dissertation on Faulkner, and taught Developmental English and First-year Writing at Georgia Southern from 1978 to 1983. In 1983, I moved to Valdosta State College (now University) in Valdosta, GA, as head of the Dept. of Eng., a position I stayed in for 11 years. I then served as Dean of Arts & Sciences at VSU from 1994-2000 when I moved, as provost, to Berry College in Rome, GA. I served as provost for 7 years, then joined the Dept. of English at Berry where I taught full-time until I retired in 2018.
