I've shopped at Walmart.

Anybody remember "Curly" the talking bird at K-Mart?
He talked to me.

April, that is funny, I did that the first time I tyoed it in too! I was going to mention it but I figured you are all good typers unlike me, LOL! have to go sit in line at the church and pick up my grown up daughter, she wore her new black boots and actually let me do her hair for the first time ever! Although I have been waiting for her to let me do her hair, it was a shame to hide all her beautiful curls! Hubby is leaving work early to pick up the boy, he has a dentist appointment so I am spared the rush from point A to point B in a three minute time period, which really is 5-8 minute ride!

Dan, that is funny, my mother in law was just talking about that bird the other day. We could not remember his name, thanks! Oh and thanks for the comment on my smile, it made my day! The store that was attached to KMart was a Great Scott, wasn't it? My mom in law says no but I remember the two hearts on the sign and that was Great Scott. When that Kmart became Super Kmart they just converted the attached grocery store and gave it all a face lift.

Hey guys, is Westborn still around?

Did anyone else ride the monirail between Fairlane and the Hyatt 100 times a day? That's probably why they shut it down - too many kids causing trouble!

I remember my mother dragging me around K-Mart chasing that damn blue light ... That little cart on wheels was the cause of many sad moments for me in my childhood...LOL I did get her back one day. I hide in one of the circle racks of clothes and listen while they paged for everyone to look for "the little girl" over the speakers. My ass still hurts for that one...

OK wow...so many good memories...Yes it was a Great Scott, then turned to Farmer Jack, & when super K opened just converted both stores. I do not remember know bird at Kmart, & I lived/loved the Mart, up until they annouced their bancruptcy like 5 years back or so, now they suck, never anything in the store & was is there is usally over marked.

Shannon...only one thing I hated more then a blue light, was a garage sale...I would sit in the car hiding, hoping no one would see me at a garage sale.

Westborn the shopping mall or the market? Both are still there, but the little Mall just isn't the same...no Crowley's, or Sally's...it's like every other strip mall now.

And the Monorail...Oh I loved the Monorail. I use to take a bus from the corner of Monroe & Caryle to Fairlane & just sit for hours passing judgement on others. I use to skip school there, but then it seemed security was following you, gonna the guilty buzz kill.

Did anyone else go to "the falls"? It was the water rapids over the rocks behind Henry Ford Manson, but the other side? You would get to it off of Oakwood Blvd, the rich little subdivision? I loved it there, I thought it was so romantic to swing from a rope & dive into the Rouge River...NASTY! I really thought it was my private peace of heaven.

I really had an obession w/the damn creeks, remember the first time I discovered "the trails", again thought I found my own private peace of heaven, until like the 2nd time I went there & seem 1000 kids. But I must say even though I lived no where by the creek, I found a many of times to walk the creek, but it only took one time for the ice to break & I was done w/that.

Yes been to the falls---never swam in it--Wasn't it like 10th grade biology when we got the perch that had 2 ovaries instead of just 1????

Shannon--about the Cat--If it makes the situation any better--You made me laugh really hard when I first read it and I really needed a laugh.

Gwen- glad the story made you laugh. I never saw my dad laugh so hard than that day. I feel for the cat but have gotten over it...LOL

Good old Farmer Jack and Great Scott, gone forever. I was in Riverhead (eastern Long Island), to go to the outlet malls. While I was finding a place to park I saw a Farmer Jack truck trailer in a storage lot. It was nice to see.

I used to think Lisa Cunningham's family owned Cunningham's Drug Store by Murray's Auto Parts on Van Born.

Does anyone remember the giant parakeet cage in Southland Mall?

"Curly" the talking bird, was actually stolen one night. When the news reported it, Curly was returned.
I was young, maybe 5 or 6 but I was really following that story.

My mom used to take me out on my birthday to Hudson's for lunch and a visit to santa (Dec. 18). We walked along a decorated path to get there. Close to the end, a worker would direct the white kids one way and the people of color the other way to meet "their" Santa!!!

I had a dream last night that I was at another one of our reunions. It is kind of fuzzy, but Teresa Trantham was there!?!? One of the people I had hoped to see at our real reunion. Anyway, Teresa it was nice to see you.

No SANDER'S at the Westborn Mall ANYMORE!!!!!!!!!!!

Romas and my family went to the Detroit Historical Museum this year. I still have a blast walking the streets of old Detroit in the basement of that place.

I never went to Bob-Lo Island!!!!

Wow, I'm chatty today. Maybe April is channeling her spirit through me.

Ulrich, Hooker, and many other of my favorite columnists have been MIA for awhile now.

I had dinner Saturday with Teresa Trantham, Julie Churchvara, Kathy Robertson, and Debbie Smith. It was a blast. Everyone is doing great. It was really wild to be sitting there with all these ladies 20 years after sitting with them in the lunch room at AHS! Because most of my memories are of us as kids, it takes a bit of mental catching up and realization that we all have kids and husbands now. None of us feel like we could possibly be twenty years older.

I recomend getting together with your old friends who knew you then. The girls made me remember things about myself that I had forgotten. It was all very cool!

I loved Bob-Lo and the ferry! My dad took me there every weekend for the longest time. I'm not sure I want to come back and see how much it has changed! I was sad to hear that the Satellite bowling alley went away.

Murray's Auto was my first job when I was 15. It was only a block away from home. One day Brian Radtke came in the store and I was starving so I lied and told him I had my license and he let me take his Camaro or Corvette (can't remember) to Hardees and I jumped a curb and prayed that there wasn't any damage! I barely knew how to drive! It was fun though.

Dan, I remember the parakeet cage at Southland and the silver "pillars" that were there, we used to play on them. Do you remember the play area in the middle of Meijer's? It was like a big enclosed plexi-glass like area with big huge animals to climb on. We had to go shopping with my mom and she would make us wait in there for her to be done. WOW! Has our world changed? I could not imagine leaving my kid anywhere like that, I have a hard time just letting them go th school without me to be there and watch over them!

11/19/08 01:41 PM #963

Dan Wallace

I know what you're saying, that Meijer was located in TAYLOR!!!

Dan...I'm glad you got the mental messages! LOL This week my hubby is on vacation & he is really jealous of the computer, so my time has been limited. And tomorrow I go for 2nd interview for a contractual job, so not sure what my time will be like.

I loved Southland as a kid, the bird cage, the glass shop when they use to blow the glass to make the pretties right there, they still have the shop, but the glass is pre-blown. But my favorite obession as a kid was the SUPER SIZED stuffed horse in Circus World. I wanted that horse, it seemed like you could of real sat on it...it was $100! Of course I begged & pleaded, & as spoiled as I was, I never got it. I think back & it probably cuz they couldn't figure how they'd get it home, little lone into the house, nor my room.

As for Sanders...it's gone like the Kresges, not even in Lincoln Park shopping center anymore. They are trying to get everything out of LP shopping center, but leave Sears & build a Walmart. I'm down with another closer white devil in the hood.

Dan about your Hudsons story...my hubby's mom took him down there, stood for hours & was mind blown by the different color Santa. I think it was actually really racist in my opinion. I mean is it like having a totally different water fountain to drink out of, to keep them on "their" side of the store.

Tracey...I wish I could hang w/my childhood friends..but let's take roll call...um..Shelly is gone, Cindy is evil, Michelle Thornton has an addiction problem, Angie Southworth is deceased as well...I got my high school chums...Jen Pirronello who lives in Arizona now, & Molly Renaud who don't drink. So I'm just screwed. Oh & it's been about 4 years since I have been able to get a hold of Tammy Bondy.

And about Hooker...I do miss him very much as well! It is hunting season, is he maybe hunting for eggs or road kill? Bill has been missing forever too, but Ulrich thinks he's in Florida...brat I sure could go for some warm weather.

Hey how is everyone doing? I just got a new phone and wanted to see if it would work.

Hey Chris, welcome... This is so weird. You just popped into my head a few hours ago! There was that song you really liked in 12th grade and you always made everyone be quiet when the good part came on. You would make a whole room full of people shut up! You did that at the one party I had and people started running because they thought the cops were there. I swear, it was on the radio today! I can't remember what the name of it was or who sang it...
