Speaking of milk, did any of you have your milk delivered to your house like we did? Calder Dairy I think it was called.

My Dad had it in his head itwas better to buy White Castles to go and put your own cheese on it at home. Also, "why buy pop there when we have it cheaper at home?"

I remember when in High School, Brian Radke was helping to deliver the milk. It was weird seeing him at my house.

We did Tracey- Ours milk was Twin Pines... What I wouldn't give now for this service. We go through about 4 gallons a week in this house.

I just looked out my kitchen window and there are four deer in the yard. One is only ten feet from the house.

Surprised Lily (the dog) hasn't bothered with them.

Yes having the milk delivered was good. We never had pop but we could easily convince my mom to grab a gallon or two of ice cream from off the milk truck!

I loved Calders Chocolate Milk! It is the best! Now I here there Egg Nog is to die for, but I don't like that shit. And I have been a Pepsi only girl since I was like 7-8 years of age. Went straight from the Nesles Quik mix, to Pepsi! Never liked favored pop, or coffee for that manor. On occassions a French Vanilla Cappachino from good ole 7Eleven!

Now that's what I really miss when I am working in the D, there are no 7Elevens in Detroit!

Giant's has the best coffee EVER...Only problem is if you go in to get one you have to boil all your clothes to get the "Giant's Odor" out of them.

I use to love the Giant burgers! In like 1992, I found a little bone in one & the burger was uncooked, haven't had one since! That ruined it for me!

Wow! There has been some serious chatter. I'm too lazy to go back and read all of it, though.

I loved the job at Silky Sullivan's, even though I was fired after 2 and half years. The owner thought I was involved a car theft ring w/ other kids from St Alfonsus (sp?) High School.

Bill: Do you remember the other afternoon busboy, Mark (?)? He reminded me of the punk on the motorcycle from The Bad News Bears.

First Happy New year to everyone. Havent been on here in a while so thought I'd dive back in..

Wallace, Burger Chef was the best. Always ordered the "BIG CHEF" burger. Somehow my brother still has a sugar packet from Burger Chef. Why?? I have no clue...lol

I remember working at Friendly Market and somehow beer would just end up out by the dumpster every weekend..Oh and Sun Country Wine Cooler 2 litres. Slammed a few of those just to catch up after I got out of work....

Romas and I stopped for Calder's Dairy last week.
I bought chocolate milk for Kate, egg nog for myself, buttermilks for my dad and grandpa. Buttermilk is rancid.

Romas and I also stopped at A&W on Ecorse. Did they close all the Daly Drive-Ins? They had some good burgers and footlong coney's.

Ooo, Tom Nason, How you doin'? :)

My husband eats buttermilk and rice krispies...

Dan Calder's chocolate Milk is so good, think & rich, do more then 8 oz & your belly will be a hurtin'. Daly's I believe has been back & forth with being opened. I seriously think it is like only open from like 11-5? Or last I knew that was the situation. You know I only ate there I think once & I think I was to drunk to know if they were any good! My ex-BFF Cindy Hurst use to live like 3 blocks away for awhile with her ex-boyfriend, babies daddy like from 93-01 off & on, but never did it occur to me to stop in, hense it was shortly after the whole bad experience with Giant that keep me away.

Now my Mom was always a Downriver rat, so we use to frequent the Carter's at Southfield & Jefferson on our way to Wyandotte or Ecorse depending which relative we were visiting. To believe from like age 3-13 I use to frequent Ecorse & Rouge...that was back went it was mostly immigrants & southern folk.

Robert? Lazy? Is this a new years resolution? Or just getting bored with us?

April Passen (Ochman)

Yeah but Michele that "Giant Oder" use to really sober a person up...LOL I use to also love their dounuts, but again that was like back in early 90's. I sold my old house to a girl named Kim Lillis, who said her father owned & she worked at Giant? She acted like I couldn't of been from DH if I didn't know her.

Im Good Tracey...Hows everything with you.....

Giant, Daly and Carter burgers were all good.. May have to stop and get some of them. Been a long time. Yummy....

Who had milk delivered to their house?! Seriously, were you raised on a farm or referring to life in the 1940's?

I love Daly's. Wallace: Do you remember going for the cheeseburgers and vanilla cokes...after going to a Marshall Law or Lynch Mob concert? Didn't you get into an argument w/ one of the workers in Livonia?

01/08/09 08:10 AM #1714

Shannon Krych (Hofer)

Robert-DH really had a milkman back in the 70's.

Does anyone remember the guy who would push the cart around and ring the bell to sharpen knives and scissors? I thought that was the craziest thing ever. My mom stopping this guy in front of our house and giving him scissors and knives ... it was like a bad horror movie waiting to happen!!

01/08/09 08:42 AM #1715

Tracey Ulrich (Dawson)

Oh man, Yes! I thought he only came down my street. My mom used to be a seamstress so she loved the scissor guy! Wow, he really got around. He was asian, wasn't he?

Our house had a milk box built into it. It was a cavity in the wall of the kitchen much like a medicine cabinet in a bathroom except it passed right through into the house. The milkman just had to put the milk into the "box" and then we could open it from inside and get the milk.
I don't remember using it as a kid because it would get nests of hornets in it so my parents closed it up. The Calder guy would leave the milk on our back porch.

Oh, and our house was built in the late 1950's. My parents were kids in the 1940's so having milk delivered wasn't something new to them.

01/08/09 09:06 AM #1716

Shannon Krych (Hofer)

Yes he was Tracey. I was always afraid of him so I would never go with my mom. We had a milk slot too. I would crawl through it sometimes. Had a habit of locking myself out of the house.

01/08/09 10:28 AM #1717

Robert Hooker

This is great! The dude w/ the knife/scissor sharpener would walk down the middle of our street in the summertime. Even as a kid, I thought it was wierd.

Some of our neighbors had the little 'box' on the side of their house. I didn't know what it was for, but thought it was neat.

I don't remember the Carter's incident. I rarely get into confrontations. I do remember you getting us into a fight in the Palace parking lot after the "Bush" and "Veruca Salt" concert. I also remember several other times I thought my life was in danger with Hooker.

In my neighborhood ice cream trucks are illegal!!!!! This is nonsense. No toasted almond for me. It only took Kate one time to learn what that music was coming down Williams street. My dad is now conditioned to jump up and buy her one every time when we visit. I used to have to beg to get an ice cream.

Remeber the Good Humor man who looked like Einstein? Good Humor had those little trucks.

01/08/09 01:55 PM #1719

April Passen (Ochman)

Ok, I totally had the Milk box, & yes it was sealed so no one who break in through it. But I as well locked myself out all the time & was a pro breaking into my bedroom window only after having to replace it 3 times!

Living on Monroe I never seen the knife guy? Maybe our street was to busy for him? Or the fact that the hardware store was a block away?

Anyone remember Paul's Market? I loved that old man, but it took time, he treated every kid like a theif until he got to know them. He had a great selection of penny candy! Use to give me extra once he learned to trust me.

We never had milk delivered, but we always frequented Caldars, my mom was friends with the owners.
