Una E. Owens, age 74, passed away on December 31, 2005, in Winter Garden, Florida. She was born on July 27, 1951 in Detroit, Michigan, and grew up in Dearborn.  After college, Una married and became the wife of a U.S. Naval commander, embracing a life of service and adaptability that took her to Rhode Island, Kansas, South Carolina, and California before settling in Florida, where she spent her remaining years.  Una was highly intelligent and deeply committed to learning, earning both a bachelor’s degree and a master's degree in science. She was a longtime employee of the University of South Florida, where she worked in the field of animal studies with dedication and care.  Above all, Una was a loving and devoted mother who found her greatest joy in caring for family. She cherished being a grandmother and especially enjoyed time spent with her granddaughters when they were little, and spoiling them as came naturally. Una delighted in visits from her daughter and grandchildren, fondly calling their time together “doing whatever we want,” which always meant ensuring everyone was happy, comfortable, and well fed.  Una is survived by daughter Jessica Mattox, son-in-law Hardy Mattox, and granddaughters Sara and Samantha; son Jeremy Owens; brother Louis Baldovini; and sister Flora Beeler. She will be remembered for intelligence, warmth, generosity, and the quiet love given so freely to those closest to her.
