In Memory

Vikki Desmarsais (Gill)

GILL, Victoria Desmarais of Bay City, Michigan, died on October 17, 2009 at Henry Ford Hospital after a long battle with cancer. Vikki was born in Detroit, Michigan on June 7th, 1951 to Ernest and Jeanie (Robin) Desmarais, both of whom have predeceased her. She was also predeceased by her brother, Ernest, Jr. Vikki is a graduate of Wayne State University cum laude. She also graduated from what is now called Michigan State University Detroit School of Law. She practiced law for a year and a half with the Michigan Court of Appeals and then entered private practice with the law firm of Kitch & Suhrheinrich. She then practiced with the firm Fordney, Cadey, Rusch, & Prime. Vikki specialized in the defense of physicians and hospitals in medical malpractice cases. It was through one of these cases that Vikki met her future husband, Harry Gill, and they were married in 1984. Vikki and Harry adopted three children: Luke (20), Ben (18), and Maria (16), all of Bay City. Vikki retired from the practice of law to raise these children for which her husband and children are very grateful. Vikki was diagnosed with a serious cancer in 1993. She fought persistently against that disease and her family was able to lead a very normal and loving existence for many years, as a result of her courage, grace, and determination. Although cancer after many years finally gave Vikki a battle that even she could not overcome, she was able to love her children and husband for many more years than any medical book would have predicted. Over the years, Vikki received wonderful medical care from physicians too numerous to mention. However, the family wishes to specifically acknowledge the efforts of John Way, M.D., James Guigelaar, M.D., Jay Summer, M.D., Ravi Lakkaraju, M.D., Shahzad Manawar, M.D., Michael Kraut, M.D., Kenneth Levin, M.D., William Lawrence, D.O., and most recently Siva Sriharan, M.D., Jack Rock, M.D., and many other physicians at Bay Regional Medical Center and other hospitals. Also, the family is grateful for the tender care and great skill of the many nurses who have over the years tended to Vikki and her husband. The importance of hospital nurses is under appreciated and the family would like to acknowledge the great contribution they have made to our family. Also, our family is grateful to the many friends and caregivers who have given us support through all the years of Vikki's illness.
