Douglas Ross

Douglas George Ross, 70, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 16 with family by his side. He is preceded in death by his son, Colby Ross, parents, Donald and Mary Patricia Ross.   He is survived by his Brothers: Tom and Steve Ross; his sister, Dona Dalgleish; his sons: Jared and Garrett Ross; daughter, Lindsay Ross; and grandchildren: Cameron, Abel, and Rosalie Ross, John Gavin Fox, and Darby Whitfield.

Doug was born on October 9, 1951 in Detroit, Michigan. He loved hockey and was able to play Division 1 at Bowling Green State University from 1972-1975. He then went on to represent the USA playing for the 1976 US Olympics team in Innsbruck, Austria.

In 1982 he and his family settled in Huntsville, Alabama. This is where Doug took on the role as head hockey coach at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Known to most as Coach Ross, he built the program from a club team to a competitive Division 1 program where they were Nationally ranked on numerous occasions. While they were in the Division 2 era, Ross was able to win two National Championships in 1996 and 1998.

Doug Ross retired from coaching at UAH in 2007 after a successful 25 year career. He remained in the area and was able to enjoy his children and grandchildren until the time he passed. He spent a short time volunteering at Good Shepherd Catholic Church. He also had a brief run coaching at Waldorf University in Iowa. Doug is known for his great reputation, sense of humor, and his community involvement. He had a beautiful smile, was selfless, cared for others first, loved reminiscing stories of friends and past players, and enjoyed making people laugh.
