Barbara was one of the "kids in the neighborhood," the little blonde across the street when I was a little squirt growing up at what was then 306 South Harrison Street. I remember being quite jealous of her in about 3rd or 4th grade. We had both entered a local writing contest where she came in first ($5) and I came in second ($3). Other neighbors were John Erickson, Billy Meyers, Albert Nicoli, and others. Out of school story, but when my middle brother (Richard/Dick) was about 4, my dad has just acquired an old Dodge with standard transmission and push button starter on the dash. Of course Dick takes it for a 50-foot test drive and plows into a huge elm tree in Barbara's back yard. I do recall my dad and my brother both being shades of crimson.
