Karen Anne Matousek Lawton

June 22,1947 - - - March 7, 2006

Karen Lawton , 58, of Killen. Alabama passed away at her home on Tuesday, March 7, 2006. The family will receive friends al Elkins Funeral Home, Florence, Alabama on Thursday from 6:00-9:00 p.m. On Friday, March 10,2006 at 10:00 a.m. the Rosary will be said at St. Joseph Catholic Church followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. with Father Andy Sullivan presiding. Cremation will take place following the services.

Karen was preceded in death by her brother Joe Matousek and parents Milt and Gloria Matousek.

Karen taught in Ohio and Hillsboro, Alabama and has been a resident of Killen since 1974. She was a kindergarten teacher at Brandon School for more than 20 years. She loved her students and they loved her. She was "Teacher of the Year" for many years in the Florence City School system and retired in 1999.

She was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church where she served as a Eucharistic minister. Elector. St. Camilla's Committee, Catholic Women's Society, Co-Chairman of the Funeral Committee, and active in many parish ministries. She was also very active in her community where she was the president and the past vice-president of the Hi Neighbors Committee, and the Dinner Club Chairman.

Karen is survived by her husband of 35 years John Lawton; sons Ian Berry, Florence and Morgan Berry and wife Laura, Birmingham; daughter-in-law Elizabeth Berry, Florence; granddaughter Martha Berry; brother-in-law Bill Lawton and his wife Penny and their family, Lakeland, Florida; father-in-law Stan Lawton, Florence; aunts and uncle Carl and Dusty Matousek and Georgie Oakes, Lake Placid, Florida; cousins Virginia Diaz and Norma Novak, River Forest, Illinois and Willard and Cherie Brandt,, Warsaw, Indiana.

Pallbearers will be lan Berry, Morgan Berry. Bill Lawton, Tim Lawton, Steve Brinley and Charles Cutshaw. In lieu of flowers, please consider memorials to the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Institutional Development/UA20, 9500 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio 44195 or the Hospice of the Shoals.

Karen was always special, a goodness from top to bottom, inside and out. She was taken far too soon and will always be missed by those who knew her, and more by those who never had the opportunity. Thom DDHS '65
