I will never forget one day in mid January riding on the back of a scooter with Bill driving -- went the back way to Plains -- Bill wanted to woo one of those Plains girls....by the time we got there neither one of us could talk because our lips and faces were so cold we couldn't hardly speak. By the time we returned I think he had made up his mind that this new girl might be 'geographically undesirable' at least until spring.
I remember in the lower grades when someone would ask Bill his name, he would say, "William George John Richards". Bill was a lot of fun to be around and loved life and his friends. We were not close friends, but I will never forget seeing him after returning from Viet Nam at Cleo's Restaurant. How much the war had hurt him. Bill, we appreciate your service wish you were still with us.
I am so sad to hear about Bill. Was not aware of his passing.
Bill was a really good friend. We had so much fun together.....One time Bill and I were in Victor Lozano's jeep. (I was told by my mom to never get in that jeep!!!) But anyway, we went out to the go cart track and were doing figure 8's and Bill and I were in the back of the jeep sitting on the side of the jeep. I went from one side to the other and did a flip and landed on the pavement and it took all the hide off of my backside. Victor was so scared.....he did not want my mom to know that I had been in his jeep. So I went home and lied to my parents......NOT A GOOD IDEA!!!!! Because once my mom found out the truth...the punishment was MUCH, much worse!!!! Bill and Victor told me that I looked like a sack of potatoes rolling on the pavement!!!!
I remember coming back to D.C. to visit my Dad, and learning of Bill's accident and how sad it made me.
Bill and I were boyfriend and girlfriend in the early grades. Mike Lovelace, Gary Mead, Sheila Marlow, Bill and I would play army (Sheila and I were nurses) on the play ground in the first grade. Somehow in the midst of battle - Gary pushed me off the merry-go-round and chipped my front tooth.
In the summers, we used to have lots of fun at the pool. When we were small, Bill's parents ran the pool, and my brother, Guy, taught swimming lessons. Bill, Gary and I were some of his students. It always seemed their mission was to drown me!
And when I broke my back my junior year, Bill and his mom, Frances, would routinely come visit me to cheer me up.
Mr. William John George Richards - "Bill" - was handsome, fun, and a good friend! He will always be missed!
Bill and his family took me in from day one when I showed up in DC. Bill and I worked at the pool in the summer. I remember one day at ladies day a little boy wandered off into the deep end and got into trouble. I took off my madress windbreaker and my mirrored sun glasses and dove in after the little guy. When I got the little boy up on the side of the pool Bill reached down a hand and helped me out. He looked me straight in the eye and said: "David these are Church of Christ women you aren't suppose to get in the water with them, they don't believe in mixed swimming". Well I was Baptist and Bill was Catholic so I looked at Bill's dad and said what do I do just let him drown. He said no that's what Bill would do next time just don't spend all day getting your garb off if someone drowns it's way too much paper work. Bill was a good friend and I won't forget him. God Bless you Bill Richards
Bill was such a cutie and so full of life!During high school, Debi Arbuckle worked at the swimming pool, inside with Frances. I was the sub for her when she was gone. Bill talked us all into putting peroxide (straight out of the bottle) on our hair---of course it looked awesome on him with his tanned skin. I can't say much for rest of us. His parents were so cool and fun! Bill was living proof of what Vietnam did to our whole generation. I can't even imagine the things those guys had to live with and see over there. We owe them all a giant debt of gratitude. Debby and I were darn good nurses, if I remember correctly! Bill would also chase us for a kiss--Debby what the heck were we doing running? Go figure!
