Lisa,

I have very precise memories of telling my parents I wanted to be a religion teacher and being told by them, in no uncertain terms, "absolutely not--you won't make any damn money!" However, because some of those religion teachers inspired me, later in life, to complete an MA in theology, I do remember his name. His name was Jackson Tague; however, I believe that he used the name 'John.'

I really don't think that he topped Sal Piero in terms of being memorable. As you might recall, Mr. Piero served a dual function: stand-up commedian and religion teacher. I remember that Mr. Piero gave up his lucrative career as a religion teacher to stage Rocky Horror rallies. I even remember seeing him on campus when I was an undergraduate (and being dragged to the rally by by roommate). You can imagine my surprise when I saw my one of my Morris Catholic religion teachers (the only thing that would have topped that would have been if Sister Georgine decided to leave the convent to stage Rocky Horror rallies). (God rest her soul. That was a terrible thing to write.)

Best regards,

Elmer

yep, it was john tague. he was also the jv basketball coach for a few years. speaking of sal piero, he told me one time that "everything you wanted to know about sex, but were afraid to ask" was a funny movie, so i should go see it. which i did. but since it was rated R, i had to bring my parents, which i did. so talk about a very uncomfortable movie experience! especially when my parents were laughing out loud and i still didn't know half of what the movie was about... you should have seen mr. piero's face when i told him what i did.

I think we should have a raffle at the reunion. Whoever wins, gets to live in Greg Marion's house for a year! Hang five... Bill

I am supposed to be completing my paperwork...but this is much more fun...I am laughing outloud!...had to shut my office door.

My most vivd recollection of Mr. Tague is his selection of bow ties for game days. Since I did not play for the boys JV I had a clear view of him from across the court, neck pinched inside the collar with a face the color of molten lava (pobably because Casey just missed a lay-up just kidding Bill...I'm sure your were 100% from the block)what a sight! Regrettably I did not have him for religion, though I did have Mr. Piro and Sister Georgine. Does anyone remember Ms. Romano, an incredibly young Eng teacher? I don't think I had a single day of vocab or sentence diagraming all year, but I remember that a few of the guys in the class dangled Tim Lafferty out the window once or twice.

How about Mr. Costanza....who never, ever worried about political correctness. God bless him!

Just curious if Bill Casey ever saw the movie AFTER puberty!?!? If so, was it as funny as your parents thought???

I would say (at least in my opinion) that the nicest and most serious teacher that any of us had at Morris Catholic was Sister Mary Veronica. She was, indeed, a scholar. I ran into Sister Mary Veronica a few years ago. She actually recognized me and remembered that I was in her sophmore history class (thirty years later) and told me that she continues to pray for all of her former students.

Second on my list would be the Raushers; although not scholars, by any means, they put into practice their faith by adopting a group Native American siblings (if only everyone could, in some way, be like them). May God bless them with his/her (unlike Mr. Costanza, as a High Church Episcopalian, I strive to be politically correct and inclusive) choicest blessings.

Many of the other teachers formed what I would term a microcosm of a typical corporate office--harmless, but characters nevertheless. Who can forget Miss LaDonne's fashion sense or Mrs. Benson's taste in jewelry. Could Mrs. Benson have put another piece of jewelry on her body? And who (well, only the males would remember this) could forget Mr. (a.k.a. coach) D'Octavio's (I have a feeling that I've butchered the spelling) sex education class.

At any rate, all these things provide wonderful memories of (dare I sound like my grandparents?) simpler times.

Now I'm really starting to worry about my memory! Someone help me with the name of a very nice female teacher...biology I think..30ish,dark brown hair. If some of you recall, we teased her one day for always eating chocolate chip cookies in class..and this made her cry. later, she told us she was diabetic. Maybe it was Joyce Selinger, or is that someone else?
And Bill, you are one step ahead of me on the Hawaii express to visit Greg and family!
Enjoying all of your postings!

the diabetic science teacher was Joyce Selinger. i remember we brought those chocolate chip cookies from the cafe and ate them in class - she looked up and started crying, explaining she was diabetic. we went up to apologize after class and we were all staring down at our shoes and finally john o'connell formalized an apology. but we all felt like crap because she really was a nice teacher.

carol - yes, i did see the movie as an adult and it was really funny, especially since i've engaged in most, if not all, of the activities depicted in the movie ;-)

marlene - i'd reply to your hit about layups, but i saw how big your kids are, so i don't want to get pummelled. we're all good.

andrew - dude, i'll take a hit of that laughing gas.

lisa - when you find the plastic surgeon, tell him i want to look like dean digiacomo...OMG, he's still hot... can i say that?

i gotta get back to work.

Elmer,And Mr. Piro is on Wikipedia...How many MC teachers can boast that? :)

As a parochial school teacher, I am responsible for teaching religion to my 3rd graders...I doubt if any of my lesson will ever hold a candle to his!

JoAnn,
So you think it's the Cali sun? Maybe I just didn't move far enough west!

Marlene,
Next time we meet, let's make it a brew or martini...
I had a bad experience in college with sangria (long story). Let's just say that it has only been in the past few years that I could even drink the wine at mass!

Karen: You're right. I learned quite a lot from Mr. Piro's class--in particular I learned a lesson in "following one's bliss" before hearing it from Joseph Campbell. On a less serious note, I shall never forget Sister Georgine's very literal (and physical) exegesis of Our Lord's admonition to turn the other cheek which she decided to demonstrate on Harold Cody.

Additionally, do you remember when Sister Georgine would fall asleep in the middle of praying? At the time I thought perhaps she was engaged in some sort of mystic vision (like Julian of Norwich); now I think perhaps she was just burned out.

Elmer,
I remeber the sleeping part...and shared the experience with her whenever possible. She was also my Freshman homeroom teacher....by religion class I was burned out.

Marlene,

Great response! I'm still laughing as I write this. Seriously, those nuns gave us great educations.

On a lighter note, I have a friend who is an Episcopal nun with whom I've gone drinking with while in the UK. I usually go on a tour with her each September and tell her that if she'll come with me to a pub, I'll buy. One time she wore her habit in a small pub in Scotland where we watched a rugby game. I can't imagine doing that with Sister Georgine (how times have changed!).

Bill, ...and if I win the raffle, where do I get to stay? Weggy

05/05/08 08:47 AM #26

Harold Cody

Elmer,

I still have a scar on my hand from Sister Georgine's ruler. And Mr. Piro, I still remember clapping the chalk erasers over his frow and putting gum on his seat. Gosh I was bad! But I still smile :)

Weggy,

If you win the raffle, you get to stay at my place all winter and shovel horse poop.

Lisa,

You always had the honor of sitting next to me in many classes, poor dear, did you learn anything over my distractions?

05/05/08 12:04 PM #27

Lisa Coppola

HAROLD,
I learned that it's much better to make someone laugh than to slap someone with a ruler...and I'm glad to know you are still horsin' around! I'd sit next to you in class again anytime.

Reading all these stories about Mr. Piro's class, I just had to chime in and say that had to be one of the funniest classes to be in, especially with Harold and Bill Genervino.

05/05/08 08:05 PM #29

Harold Cody

Maureen,

I still remember you running around in your cheerleader uniform then you ended up marrying one of my best childhood friends! Lucky guy :)

BTW Does anyone know where Bill Genevrino is? I'd love to reconnect with him!

Lisa,

Glad to hear you learned something over all my distractions (the teachers called it disruptions). You made me blush. LOL. I REFUSE TO GROW UP ;)

Maureen Bezold (Como)

Harold,
Thanks for the kind words. Michael has very fond and funny memories of growing up with you and he says "Hi". I'm very happy for you that you have someone in your life.
I certainly hope that you will be coming to the reunion.

What was it??? A valium stupor or something??? Damned if I can remember a ceiling caving in OR the day off for it!! Maybe it was in an honors classroom or something??? How about "moonshoes" in the library??

05/07/08 11:28 AM #32

Elmer Dante

Carol,

I haven't thought about 'Moonshoes' in years. I can't even remember her real name (although if my memory is correct, she was a former Latin teacher). Anyway, what's wrong with sensible shoes?

How about Sister Theresa Marie--everyone's all time favorite?

Harold,

I think that I can truly say that for the last twenty-one years in tax, I've gained a lot of experience in shoveling s--t. The drawback is I don't get to work outside or with horses--however, another animal as an analogy for auditors and some of my co-workers often comes to mind.

New York State is a great place to live. I had the unpleasant task of working on an acquisition of a company that was formerly headquartered in Syracuse. The people were very nice, despite the fact that they were losing their jobs. If only New Jersey could be more like New York State.

Gee...I hope Mary Garland (Fisher) doesn't read my comments on work...She is the H.R. director where I work and might I say, the most competent H.R person I've ever worked with.

Best regards,

Elmer
