Kathy-

Everyone is probably thinking we're nuts being excited about puddles! I hope to take my dog for a walk tonight since it has stopped raining (for now at least) and she probably won't know what to do with all of the puddles! Our front yard is zoysia which was stressed before all of this rain. Now its starting to show some lovely shades of green! The back yard is pitiful, which is why we put in the pond, we can't grow grass thanks to the drought unless we spend a mint and put in more zoysia. Its all weeds, and now they're thriving like there's no tomorrow. At least they're green! THe wave petunias are great, but mine died last year so I didn't try again this year.

I thought Pat said he was going, so hopefully we can all travel together. My flight is a Delta flight.

Hey, we need some of you Jersey musicians to travel to Atlanta and play for us drought stricken southerners! Who's up for it? Marianne's husband? I think Marianne Scerbo is buried in school work already. I should be cooking......

Dave Zelinsky's band is really good, too. I went onto YouTube to listen to them. I'm thinking a road trip from NJ to Atlanta would be great!

Faith - Thanks for the info on Dave Zelinsky. How are you doing? Are you going to post pictures? Would love to see them. Say hi to Hope for me, OK?

Deb- We have Bermuda grass. Our back yard sounds similar to yours. Big patches of red clay, along with a couple tufts of grass and then the WEEDS! I'm thinking we should just concrete the whole back yard. There's only one problem . . . it's an acre! My son, Dylan, would love it. We could make a basketball court in one corner, a track to ride his four wheeler on, a big section of it could be for his huge trampoline, one corner could be a firepit, another corner could be a cabana/gazebo. Sounds like a plan to me except that you need money to do such a thing. Oh well, dreaming is a good thing!

Maureen- Didn't we talk about a road trip to Atlanta? I think we did and I'm thinking we should think some more about that. It would be sooooooooo much fun. Carol Valone needs to come since I missed her when I was in NJ.

Carol- You are sooooooooooo funny! I was told I need to wear Depends when you are around. Come on down!

T To my Dearest Classmates; I recognize that this is my first time participating in the MCHS live chat however, that's primarily due to the internet security I deal with during the day and the fact that I am restricted from accessing our web site while at work. To those classmates that I have spoken with over this past weekend, I want to say thank you for bringing the forum back in line with the original intention of reconnecting and enjoying each other's company. We were always a class of individual ideas and I believe we have grown into adults that respect each other in every possible way. I can't wait to see EVERYONE on October 4th (I ask you [beg you] to bring your significant other), we'll all have such a wonderful time. We've worked hard to make this reunion special but we still have a long way to go with attendance being a key component to the overall success. I wish everyone and your families good health and happiness. Thanks again and enjoy the web site. P.S. My next mission is to load up some pictures!

Good health and happiness to you, too, John! It's nice to see you on the message forum. Please don't be a stranger. Where has Cheryl been?

08/26/08 08:56 PM #538

Deborah Kozak (Martin)

Hi John! Great to hear from you! Thanks for all you're doing for the reunion! Can't wait to see you and everyone else.

Kathy-

Oh yes, good ole clumps of clay, and don't forget the ant hills of summer. Your bermuda grass should perk up soon, if not I think we should adopt the southwestern terrain of cactus plants, rocks, and more rocks! (By the way, my dog slipped in a puddle tonight -I felt so bad!)

Yes- road trip to Atlanta! Who's coming?????

Marianne Scerbo (Longchamp)

Hi everybody!
Thanks for asking about me - I'm still alive but have been switching back into teacher mode. It's only my 2nd year, so there is much to be done. Sometimes I get so nervous thinking about it I feel like I'm going to "toss my cookies" (pardon the simile). I have been getting a lot done, and feel much better now that I'm getting a handle on the organization. Even though school doesn't officially start for a week, I was in yesterday prepping my classrooms (I work out of 2 rooms) and will be in all day on Thursday. MaryGrace, how do you do it????

Hey Maureen B.,
I forgot to tell you in my e-mail that I was in Boonton today. I had to get some work done on my car, so while I waited, I walked from Myrtle Ave. all the way up Main St. to Lotus Boutique and bought some new clothes for work. Then I walked back to the dealership. It was a lovely day but that hill is a killer!

And to the two Johns,
O'Connell - you rock
Pascarella - nice to see you joined the group

gotta run and stuff lecture notes into plastic sleeves to make a binder for a new book I'm teaching to my modified kids. the novel is called "the curious incident of the dog in the night-time" and is super for high schoolers. anyone read it?

oohhh, that's a good discussion topic - any good reads over the summer? i just finished "the kite runner" and loved it; can't wait to read the follow-up "a thousand spendid suns" oh well, maybe next summer i'll get to it

happy labor day to all and happy new school year!!!

love,
marianne

p.s. the reunion will be my last night out until next june...i'm already stressing over getting my lesson plans done for the reunion weekend - i had better start writing them now :)...

Marianne-

Glad you've come up for some air! Was wondering if you have read "Breaking Dawn"? My girls are reading it and are thoroughly enjoying the story. It is book four in a series written by a bored housewife. Apparently it is a love story between a human girl and a vampire. According to my girls, it contains some pretty intricate details about the vampire subject matter, especially when the human girl becomes pregnant with the vampire's baby after they are married and complications with the pregnancy arise. Have you heard of this book? I wonder if others have and what they think of the subject matter. My husband is waiting to read this book, and hopefully we won't regret letting our girls read it!

To John O'Connell -thanks for the comments - I agree whole heartedly. I didn't want to have to take out any additional life insurance before the reunion. I look forward to seeing you, Gleason, Hettinger etc. in NYC in September.

To Bill Casey: If crickets are lucky - then are all the frieds ones I ate during my trips to China only good luck as long as they stayed with me...or is that bad karma? How about sea roaches?

Cheryl Smith (Rapoano)

Hi all -

I've spent the last couple of months just reading the posts & laughing my butt off (I wish laughing would get rid of it !) I'm so glad to see that the topics have once again become light and fun.

Carol & MaryGrace - my vote is split for funniest, I don't know which of you is making me laugh harder -

I can't wait until October to see everyone.

Maryanne - chicken parm sounds lovely - you can't believe how I look forward to being in NJ at least once a year in order to get good Italian food - I'm usually up for 5 or 6 days & spend most of it eating my way to heaven ! ! ! They say it's the water down here in FL, but we can't get good bread, rolls, bagels, pizza, and don't even get me started on FL's idea of Italian sausage !

Kathy & Debbie - do you have the same problem in GA?

Lisa C. - where have you been lately?

A HUGE THANK YOU to Cheryl & John for putting this all together - my reservations are made & I can't wait. Unfortunately my husband can't come with me, but I am bringing my 12 yr. old son Eddie to the game on Saturday - anyone else bringing kids?

Ok, I've babbled enough - time to go let the dog out. . .

Two days into the DNC....Not one word about Hillary Clinton,Michelle Obama OR Ted Kennedy...Am I even on the same planet??????

Did some one say "karma"....oooohhhhh...you better not go there....KEEP IT SIMPLE,KEEP IT SIMPLE,KEEP IT REEEAL SIMPLE....PEOPLE,WE ARE LIVING THROUGH A VERY HISTORIC MOMMENT IN TIME!!!!!!

Why doesn't anybody want to talk about these things????
I really cannot believe it!

Did any of us even consider the possibilty that a Woman or a Black Man COULD BE President 30 years ago?
Do you know how this impacts young children and future generations?

WHY doesn't any one want to talk about this...I just don't get it!!!

Margaret,
Yes, I went with my son Sean to help him set up his new dorm apartment in Oahu last week, and Monday was his first day of school as a sophmore, and his first time away from home on his own. We traveled on the new inter-island "superferry" to Oahu and we shipped his car too. I had to show him how to drive on freeways since we don't have any such thing here in Maui.
It's pretty empty here without all the kids, but we're handling it better than we thought we would. Like you said, if they're safe and where they should be it's easier to handle. Sean's brother Steve lives less than a block away in the top floor of a fourty-story condo overlooking Honolulu, and I imagine Sean will spend lots of time there. Lucky kids - Why did'nt my parents....

sorry Maureen - your chicken parm - late & I guess I still confuse your name & your sister's - by the way, how is your sister?

Kathleen Gallagher (Murphy)

Hi Cheryl-

Couldn't agree more with you regarding the food in the south vs. the north. We are exactly like you. When we travel 16 hours to get to NJ, our first stop is M&S Pizza in Dover to get a pizza. We get it "to go", of course, and then bring it to our final destination with us. While we are in NJ, we usually eat "real" pizza every other day or so. There are no diners or bakeries in Atlanta. What's up with that? Atlanta's pizza consists of Pizza Hut, Dominos, & Papa Jacks. YUCK! We do, however, love to go to Krispie Kreme to get donuts. No bakeries, so Krispie Kreme will do just fine.

Shannon and Eddie are soooooooooo beautiful! Congratulations on your daughter's wedding and congrats to Eddie on his award! I'll bet you're a very proud mom!

As far as italian sausage, we've settled for Johnsonville!

Can't wait to see you at the reunion.

Hugs, Kathleen

Hi Greg!

WOW! I can't imagine LIVING in Hawaii!!! I can't even imagine ever being lucky enough to VISIT Hawaii. You are so blessed! Do you have fun every single day of your life?

Love, Kathleen

William Casey

John O - no need to help you out; you are as eloquent as ever. But truth be known, I wrote all of john's speeches for him when he ran for class president.

TRT - I did go to lijiang, which has a delicacy of "fried insects". I could to the bees, but couldn't eat the dragon flies. Rule of thumb: don't eat anything that's really weird if you can't eat it in one bite (quickly followed by a big gulp of beer). You don't wanna be cwewing on something you don't wanna be chewing on!

Kevin - I think people are avoiding the political issues because of the very heated statments that were done previously. I have ALWAYS refrained from discussing politics and I won't get into it now.

Now on your statement about did we think a black man or a woman could become president 30 years ago. I don't really remember but I think that the common thought was that a woman would be president before a black man. But maybe that was only in the sheltered little world I lived in in those days. I agree that this is historic and hope that this election turns out to be a good historic. The one thing I'm afraid of is if Obama does not get elected (I'm mum on whether that's good or bad) that SOME people will say that it was ONLY because he is black, not that most people thought that McCain would be the better choice. The fact that he's in the race is good, the fallout later COULD be bad.

John P & Cheryl - thanks for putting this together YES!

Cheryl R. - You're bringing your 12 year old to the game, great. My son will be on the bench, he MAY get to play but since he's only a Freshman probably not. OK I know what you all (those who remember me anyway) are thinking and no, he's not adpoted!! He's my "little one" 14 years old 5'10" and 210+ lbs!!! Far from skinny little me at that age.

See you all soon!!!

Richard-

My husband was small in high school, only weighed 120 pounds, but somehow was the captain of the wrestling team! So it just goes to show, size doesn't matter, except for of course in football! And good luck to your son - how exciting that your son is on your alma matter's football team. Not happening here for my husband; he wanted a quarterback and is nowhere close to that!

Kevin,
I would try to talk about politics but I am tragically uninformed...my own fault entirely. It's not that I don't bother to read anything about the candidates,it's that I am skeptical of much of what I read. Remember, I had an earlier post in which I "admitted" to having voted for Ross Perot. My main source of political information (which I believed I could trust) came from the journalist, Tim Russert, who passed away unexpectedly a few months ago. Now there was a person( notice I didn't say "man" ) I could have voted for for a political office. It is an historic election, I agree. I work with a lot of people in their 80's(patients at the hospital) and for the past few months I've been asking about their thoughts on the election and the candidates. Most of them were undecided and not really excited about either candidate. Here's my final analysis I think it will be a close race and I think someone will win. Tim Russert is probably rolling over in his grave right about now!
By the way, how are the new stores doing? What has been the hot selling item? Any big spenders stroll in? Where do you buy your merchandise? I'm kinda teasing you now, but I really do have an interest in all that.
Stay well!

Kathleen,
A special good morning to you! I'm here. Hope you are enjoying your rain. In Arizona, we feel the same way about a glorious rain shower...and it happens to be drizzling here this morning! David (my BF) is a mulch freak. I would like to know how much we spend a year on mulch? He also tries so hard to keep this little patch of grass we have looking green...not easy...and not normal here in the dessert.
Cheryl.. If you want great NJ pizza ,or a delicious eggplant parm sub go to Byrum Pizza. Or speaking of pizza. I wonder if Tony Carmagnola (Sp??) still has a pizza parlor..maybe we should all drop in on him!

Carol, I wish I could man the beer stand with you!
Off to work I go
xoxo Lisa

Elmer Dante

Hello all,

Sorry I haven't posted any responses in a few days.

Carol: I drink bourbon old fashioned--what I would call a vintage drink. Annie Fink (you may remember her dress store in Dover) introduced me to this cocktail some years ago. She's still drinking them at age 91--I had one with her the other evening.

Lisa: Any great sales lately? I've found a few. Don't think of yourself as a spinster. My cousin had a baby at age 50 (well, she adopted). I had dinner with a vicar in England last year who told me that I should adopt a child--single or not. Who knows, maybe I'll make that great leap.

Deborah: You question regarding vampire literature is intriguing. In literature, the vampire has most often represented "the other." In the novel Dracula, he personified that which was foreign or non-English. The ending of the novel was a corrolary to the cultural anxieties of the period in that the very rationalistic Christianity of the time was unable to conquer the vampire; instead, it was only the "wild, unreformed" Christianity of the Orthodox East that was able to confront and defeat absolute evil (the moral of the story: evil is conquered by acts of the heart rather than with reason...?). If you are familiar with English Gothic novels (e.g., The Castle of Otronto and The Monk), the villian is invariably a foreigner and as such represents "the other."

In the book series to which you are refering, a mortal has a baby with "the other." If art does indeed reflect society, this can only mean that our society now stands at the threshold of encountering other cultures and other kinds of people in a spirit of mutual respect.

I can't wait to read these books for myself.

Kevin,

We can discuss art, literature or fine wines.

My best,

Elmer

Shut up!!!! There really IS an Annie Fink??? And you're sluggin' down with her???!!! Is it the bourbon or "the company of a younger man" that keeps her going at 91??? She's not still driving is she?? :o)

Kev.... I'm with Lisa on that..... sheer ignorance!! Embarrassing to admit, but there was a time that I actually chose the president based on who I could stand to look at, and hear to speak, when they pre-empted my favorite shows... (ex - JFK wouldn't have been my choice because I'm not really fond of that accent)

Lisa.... AHA!! Here's our difference... I'm deathly allergic to cats!!!! caacaa!! and some dogs also!! so when a friend gets an animal, i tend to take it personally. i DO get the hint!!! :o)

Hey Elmer-

Adoption is a WONDERFUL thing! My husband and I adopted our little guy when he was three weeks old. He's 10 now. He has been an absolute blessing and I would recommend adoption to everyone. He is bi-racial. He asked Pat and I one day why his friend Christina (who happens to be Asian) looked different than the rest of us. I told him it was for the same reason that he looked different than mom & dad. Our simple explanation to him followed by explaining to him that God created each and every one of us and that we're all one of a kind and created exactly the way God wanted us to be. His response was "oh yeah, I forgot".

For all of you who are missing NJ style food, there is a web site brooklynstylepizza.com who will deliver anywhere. There is also one for Taylor ham that also delivers anywhere.

Bucky,
Funny you should mention taylor ham because the older boys were quite upset with me on vacation because I only brought 2 packages (4 slices each) of taylor ham to the Outer Banks with us. I forgot that you can't buy taylor ham in North Carolina. They made do with what they had. It is on the list for next year to bring more.
