Amy Mayes (Shay)
The Class of 88 really IS great you know. I found out about the reunion and this website from Angela Pinkleton (Heisler) who was taking classes where I work for ODU (John Tyler campus). She said that she wouldn’t be able to go, but passed along the info to me. When I first logged onto the website I wasn’t even sure if I was going to go or not, but you guys sucked me in.
Not all of my memories from High School are happy ones, but that is often the case with the very intense moments of our lives. With intensity, we lose the ability to have an OKAY time. It is either going to be a VERY GOOD time or VERY BAD time! We saw each other every day of our four years of high school as we laughed and joked and worked at growing up. We had class together, ate lunch together and in the midst of it all found little pieces of our future selves.
Should I go to the reunion or not??? The time came when I either had to make a decision, or let this moment pass by. I decided that if I could find at least 15 people on the list of attendees that I would be happy to see again I would go. So I went on the website and started counting. I passed 15 early on, and kept counting. Funny thing is after looking at each picture and story I found out that I not only wanted to see all of my friends from way back when, but also many of the people I never got to know. Each story and picture on the website made me more curious about the people who grew up with me. Listened to my music, wore those horrible stirrup pants, and occasionally used enough hairspray to be a fire hazard.
I roped a good friend into coming to the football game with me Friday night to test the waters (I’m in the middle of the big D). Even after psyching myself up I still wasn’t sure what to expect after 20 years of being away from you all. I should have known better right?!? What Rodney said at the reunion dinner really is true, when we get together we ALL get together. You would have thought that we all just teleported back in time and picked up where we left off. It took no time at all to find whole groups of people that I needed to catch up with (One weekend really is not enough time for this guys!!!). I still didn’t get to speak to half of the folks that I wanted to (can we try this again next month???). It is still amazing to me that we have all grown up, some of us have moved away, many of us have children of our own who are right now in school and following our paths into their future, and yet here we were back again reminding each other of the best bits of our past.
Kudos to the committee for bringing us all together again!!!! I’m up for whatever comes next!!!
