Rodney's grandmother, Estelle Smith, passed this morning. He has lost 2 uncles & 1 aunt - all children of this grandmother - in the last 1 - 1 1/2 years. His about passed just over a month ago. Tanya suggested we send something. I agree. I'll coordinate if we agree.

condolences to The Gilliam and The Smith families... experiencing lost is tough -

and I truly know what it feels like to lose close family members back to back to back...

Keep these families lifted up Class of 88.

Prayer is not a cliche' it is Real talk with a Real God who delivers Real Healing

(this life is but a vapor - so enjoy and embrace each vapor and those you experience it with!)

Smith, Estelle C.

On Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2008, God in His infinite wisdom called from labor to reward one of His earthly angels, Estelle C. Smith of 21206 White Oak Road, Petersburg, VA (Dinwiddie County).

She was a native of Dinwiddie County, born April 13, 1909, to the late Benjamin and Elector Jones. She was married to the late Charlie R. Smith and the mother of 14 children. She accepted Christ at the age of 13 and joined the Olive Branch Baptist Church, Dinwiddie. She was the oldest member of Olive Branch, and being steadfast in her faith, she remained faithful until her health declined.

She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, mother-in-law, aunt, cousin and friend.

She is remembered for her kind spirit and sweet personality.

She was admired for her strength and determination. She was preceded in death by four sons: Charles Smith, David Smith, Earl Smith and John Smith and one daughter, Madeline Smith Nesbitt.

She leaves to cherish her precious and loving memory, three daughters, Lillian Crawley and Lucille Blackwell (Howard) of Dinwiddie, and Jean Perkins of Petersburg; six sons, Franklin (Dorothy) and Lawrence of Petersburg, Andrew (Brenda), Henry and Thomas (Mary) of Dinwiddie; and Lewis of Detroit, Mich.; two daughters-in-law, Marian Smith of Petersburg and Bertha Smith of Blackstone; a number of grandchildren; great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.

Her testimony was "God has always stood by my side." She would often say "I've been blessed and I'm still being blessed."

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Olive Branch Baptist Church, Dinwiddie, with the Rev. Kevin Northam officiating. Interment will be in the Smith Family Cemetery, Dinwiddie. The remains will rest at the church on Friday from 11:45 a.m. until the hour of service. The immediate family will assemble at the residence at noon. Pallbearers and friends will assemble at the church at 12:30 p.m. The family will receive friends at Tucker Funeral Home Thursday evening from 6 to 7 p.m. Services under the direction of Tucker Funeral Home, 415 Halifax St., Petersburg.

Hello classmates,
The excitement of our 20th reunion has died down, but I want to take a few minutes to talk a little more about it. First, thanks again to everyone who made this reunion happen—I’m not sure how my name got on the banquet program as a committee member because I didn’t do any of the leg work (I don’t want to take any credit that I don’t deserve). Second, the reunion exceeded my expectations. I was really looking forward to catching up with old friends—and I did—but I also got the chance to get to know classmates that I didn’t know very well while in school. In the months leading up to the reunion, as well as during the reunion weekend, I had several heart-to-heart conversations with some of you. I was truly honored that you would share with me some of the things you did. And one classmate said one of the nicest things that anyone has ever said to me in my 38 years—ever.

While I know that none of our lives are perfect, I believe that most of us are striving to be and do our best. As I reflect on my conversations with some of you, I am reminded of a quote by Booker T. Washington: “I have learned that success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles he has overcome while trying to succeed.” I’m proud to be a part of a group of people who are successful in my eyes. I’m not measuring success by status, finances, job, etc.; instead, I’m measuring success by the challenges we’ve overcome. Collectively, we’ve overcome various forms of abuse, addiction, loss, incarceration, and other struggles to try our best to live right and to give our children what we didn’t have. I say this without shame or embarrassment for anyone—as a matter of fact, I tip my hat to those who struggled the most and found the strength to overcome.

My parting words…if you weren’t able to attend our 20th reunion, you missed out. You’ll definitely want to be at the next one. For those of you who were there, I’ll see you at the next reunion if not sooner.

Tina

WOW!!! Tina....even if you are in Texas...I feel you are still with us! And yes it is sad that the excitement of the reunion has died down. However, it has reunited some people that may have never found each other again. And for that, I am very grateful to all of you who put in the hours to make it happen!!

Secondly...the excitement of our reunion and website has caused the class of 89....to jump on the band wagon!!! They have got their site up and running!!! Alton and I were asked to be guests to check it out!! It is awesome. Some of us know people from that class very well too. So if you see any of them...pass it on!!

Kudos to everyone again for what you did for our reunion!!

Ok everyone, I got an email from Lawrence and he got me to thinking, (I won't tell you what about thats our secret). But anyway where the hell did everyone go. I know the reunion is over but the chance to stay in touch and talk to each other is still here. I know at least 90% of the class had asked if the website was going to stay because they wanted it to. So come on lets get back to burning this thing up. Hey Rodney how about some music please, The class of 89 has kicked it up a notch on there website we cant let them show us up. Anyone up for getting a party started some where for the Holidays?

Been kinda busy since the reunion but had a rather stressful week this week. Sunday night went to the emergency room with severe chest pain and had emergency heart cathederization. 99 % blockage of the widow maker coronary artery. Was able to save my life with a stent.Hell of a wake up call for a 38 year old !!!! Then two days later my mom had a critical heart surgery at mcv and at 4:45 a.m. yesterday morning we got the call that mom had passed. So much all at once. Pray for my family and I please.
