Im sure alot of people think:well when i was growing up and we had 9-12 channels,i came home and watched channel 2,5,7 and 9(im sure they told me the truth then and still do now!)

03/19/09 11:33 PM #2095

Elisa Cullina (O'Neill)

Mark - no you would never point that out - thank you! :)

So the message forum is finally heating up again! :)

And Rich has yet to apologize! :) (I'm not holding my breath, either.) haha

Sleep tight, all!

03/19/09 11:37 PM #2096

Elisa Cullina (O'Neill)

Explain why we are sunk if those bonuses are paid out - ESPECIALLY to those couple of employees who no longer work for AIG. There are some people getting some serious cash in there - not just a $1,000 bonus for the secretary.

The 90% tax thing is a bit shakey to me - kind of like changing the rules of the game once you've started playing. That's for all the companies who received over a certain amount of $, correct?

I don't think these people deserve a cent of it....my husband's company didn't mismanage anyone's funds AND didn't get a bonus. Just the way it went the last year....you do what you can. No bonuses meant fewer people laid off and staying in the black. That's responsible. How can they get bonuses with the tax payer dollar after they lost the tax payers' dollars? It's double dipping.

03/20/09 02:46 AM #2097

Mark Campbell

Correct on the taxes!(which is WAY more scary then peeps know for now!!!)

These people had contracts!(why are so many people trippin bout 165 mil,but didnt bat an eye at 787 billion in an unread bill???)

The biggest thing is you can't just go out and hire $10 an hour humans to fix the problem!

If there is a massive walkout, and AIG takes a crap we may never recover!!!!!so its a VERY good tradeoff considering the spot we are in!

Kinda sorta like when you stay in a relaytionship(hehe) because the sex is good, but you fight alot and no longer have anything in common(or never did!)

Instead of going to nick's or kilroy's to start planting seeds you just take it on the chin!!!!

FYI,
did i tell you campain $$$$$ coming from AIG, TOP OF THE LIST AT #1 CHRIS DOOD #2 OSPENDA!!!!!!

You can sweep only so much crap under the rug, before it get's a big lump in it!!!

03/20/09 07:33 AM #2098

Elisa Cullina (O'Neill)

Nice analogy Mark - quite descriptive! :)

03/20/09 09:29 AM #2099

Cherie Santelli (Kwiatkowski)

Yesterday I found out that my position has been one of the budget cuts in the school district that I work in. Since I only started working there in January I am pretty much at the bottom of the totem pole as far as seniority goes. So, the chances of me having a position in that district next school year are between slim and none. Maybe I can get a "bonus" before the end of the school year--hahahahahaha! I'd consider a job for next school year a bonus!

03/20/09 01:31 PM #2100

Mark Campbell

Cherie,i wish you the best of luck!!!!

So ur sayin slim and none, and slim just left?

Dear(old buddy old pal of mine)elisa,
I'm glad you "picked up" on my drift hehe!!!!

9/12 project(get on it now!!!!)

Soup(adding nothing today)out!
We need to take a break and be thankful for what we have every now and then!!!!!

03/20/09 02:08 PM #2101

Elisa Cullina (O'Neill)

Mark
9/12 project... starting reading it last night...very interesting. Great concept....didn't like the whining in a lot of the posts - some of the people missed the point of intelligent discussion and started getting personal. Aside from that - quite thought provoking...and I like the origins of the title....what kind of person were you on 9/12....

I'll keep reading....

03/20/09 02:09 PM #2102

Elisa Cullina (O'Neill)

Cherie - what a bummer about the job!!
Something else will come along!

03/20/09 02:34 PM #2103

Phil Mierzwa

Cherie,

That sucks, I've know since FEB 08 that I would lose my job this year. It has moved around from April to October to August. My job is moving to Boston and I do not want to move to Boston. I have a lot of seniority after 20 years with the same company but what can you do.

Soup, MJ, Kobi, Elise, all free thinking Americans

socialism- a theory or policy of social organization which aims at or advocates the ownership and control of the means of production, capital, land, property, etc., by the community as a whole and their administration or distribution in the interests of all.

communism- a theory which advocates a state of sciety in which there should be no private ownership, all property being vested in the community and labour organized for the common benefit of all members: the professed principle being that each should work according to his capaity, and receive according to his wants.

Who is to say that they have my best interests at heart and that they know what my interests are. If I work harder at the same job as someone else should I not be rewarded for doing a better job in terms of pay? If not what is the point of doing more trying more wanting more? The government has a long history of taxing and spending unwisely. I have no problem paying taxes, if I earn more I pay more I agree with that completely, but our various governmental bodies have never spent our tax dollars in an effeicent manner, Illinois being a great example.

The Federal Govt repealed the Glass-Steagall Act in 1999. This act seperated bank and brokerage activity in the wake of the 1929 stock market crash. It was determined that improper banking activity(too much stock maket involvement--today's activity in the mortgage market) caused the financial crash. I am not blaming Dems or Reps or Inds plenty of blame to go around but those who cannot learn from the past are doomed to repeat it. So we have the govt trying to fix what they broke which was working fine after they fixed it orginially in 1933.

Should some of these companies gone under, you bet, but the govt stepped in. Money like water always finds the easiest or most efficent path. A free market society that is free from onerus govt regulation (yes some is needed) where supply and demand find common ground over time will be benficiall to all. IF barriers are put up or excess regulation those funds will go elsewhere. Throwing money at problems does not usually fix them look at AIG.

We as American also need to take some blame we can't use our homes as creidt cards taking cash out to buy our product of choice. We need to save more than we are now. We see it everyday on TV BUY BUY BUY, I think back to when I was growing up on Woodlawn in Dolton. We did not have alot but we had enough. Yes, I want the best for my kids, better than I had, but at what cost? Telling our kids every once in awhile NO is a good thing (of course that is usually the first thing i say LOL).

Sorry for the rant I hope I did not offend too many of you.

03/20/09 03:09 PM #2104

Cherie Santelli (Kwiatkowski)

Mark--well, slim hasn't left the building yet, but he's sleeping really soundly!

I wasn't surprised when we were told that our positions had been cut. We are part time. There is still a chance that come June the district may finally receive the state funding that they are supposed to receive and then we could be offered a job for next school year. The only problem is that I don't necessarily get offered my job if it is available. They go to the person at the top of the seniority list. But, it is what it is. It could be worse. At least my we don't rely on my job to pay all of the bills, etc (like when my husband got laid off three years ago). I can always be a substitute somewhere.

Marty,
i found nothing to be offended about!!!

03/20/09 08:27 PM #2106

Dear elisa,

Yea i dont listen to the silly asses that type about crap!!!!

I'm all about PMA even tho sometimes it doesn't seem so!!!

But if you really just listen to what its about,it is crack on!!!

9/10=we had head in the sand(thought we were invincible!)

9/11=pissed,scared,heart broken,confused etc.

9/12=we knew what to do(didn't have to be told!)
Gave blood, helped people we didn't know, gave clothes and on and on!(we need to go back to that mindset!!!!)

I wish bob would come on and tell ya'll bout his flight a few days after 9/11!!!!

03/20/09 08:35 PM #2108

Mark,

We actually agree on something - the AIG bonuses. A contract has been signed and it's unamerican to tax something at 90% after the fact. More important to see that these kinds of bonuses are either discussed upfront or downscaled when the U.S. tax payers footing the bill.

Elisa,

Going back to an earlier comment on stem-cell research, I'd be interested to know exactly what you are talking about (send me link to info, please). So many of us (Repubs, Dems, Conservatives and Liberals alike) could "most likely" benefit from the type of research that was limited under Bush: Al Kostecki (if you need a new liver, Allen, better to lay off of the Jack, for god's sakes), Mark's son (and wife) and my son Lars, who despite the fact that he was cured of his infant cancer, is at a significant risk of a much harder to cure, genetic cancer in the future. Nancy Reagan is behind this research because of the promise it holds for the treatment/potential cure of Alzheimer's, MS, hereditary cancer, etc., etc. etc. I keep thinking that if the type of stem-cell research you were speaking of held so much promise, it would have shown results by now. But, I'm happy to look into what you have read about.

p.s. Rich says he's sorry, I'm sure. And you're right- his bark is much worse than ... well, actually, he has no bite. Just all a front!

Phil,

SO SORRY ABOUT YOUR JOB! I hope you find something else soon! How scary to be facing a layoff! I'll be thinking of you often in the next coming months and hoping that you find suitable employment.

HOWEVER, I totally disagree with your view of socialism. While you are correct in reciting the definition verbatim from the dictionary, socialism as practiced in conjunction with democracy and free markets in many other countries resembles nothing like the definition you quoted. And I speak from experience. I am not saying that I think that the U.S. should become more socialistic, like many Western European countries have, but I do believe that a more level playing field allows more opportunities for ALL to benefit from the promise that our capitalistic and democratic government affords. In otherwords, we are certainly NOT heading for the type of socialism you described - just maybe a more level playing field.

Having said that, I don't want to offend you - you were one of the people that I met at the reunion that I was most happy to be acquainted with (hows that for ending a sentence with a Chicagoism - nobody ends a sentence with a preposition out here!)

Cherie,

I'll also be thinking about you and hoping that you'll get a new job soon!

Rich,

I apologized to Elisa for you. Now say "thank you!"

EVERYONE,

Thanks for being who you are. These last few months have been quite challenging for me. My mom does have stage 4 lung cancer and I have quit my job to help her seek treatment. I so enjoy jumping on the website when I am with her up in Maryland just to see what everyone is up to! LOVE TO YOU ALL!

Mark,

YOU DA MAN! YOU KNOW THAT! I never get mad at what you write!

MJ

03/20/09 09:32 PM #2112

Elisa Cullina (O'Neill)

Mark, Gift credits on FB? Never heard of that....

Sometimes I just don't know what you are talking about....hahaha

MJ - I didn't know about your son - glad he is better now! Send me your email address in a private message (or is it in your profile) and I will send you those couple of things I was talking about for stem cell research.

Bascially, stem cells are undifferentiated cells - they haven't decide "what they'll be when they grow up." They can be harvested from embryos - but that poses all sorts of moral dilemmas because those embryos are no longer viable. They are the most "innocent" cells but more can go wrong with them during the treatment. There is an increase in tumors when embryonic cells are used.
Then there are stem cells harvested from "adults" in the pulp of baby teeth, bone marrow, skin cells and several other places. They are not quite as "pure" stem cells and each kind has some amount of limitations on how they can be used. HOWEVER, they had made more progress with the use of adult stem cells than embryonic ones.

The uproar about Obama changing the ruling is on embryonic stem cells. Bush allowed it only on existing lines of cells that had already been created. But he did not allow new embros to be created strictly for research. The research on adult stem cells did continue because it was not really a moral issue at all.

Overall, the main argument about any stem cell research is the concern about eventual human cloning. that is probably pretty far off though. The viability of the clone would be seriously compromised and, at this point, would have a much shorter life span that "the original."

Total cures have not been found but there have been promising gains made with adult cells. Okay - sorry to bore everyone else. MJ - get me your email and I'll mail you that stuff.
