Mark,
We actually agree on something - the AIG bonuses. A contract has been signed and it's unamerican to tax something at 90% after the fact. More important to see that these kinds of bonuses are either discussed upfront or downscaled when the U.S. tax payers footing the bill.
Elisa,
Going back to an earlier comment on stem-cell research, I'd be interested to know exactly what you are talking about (send me link to info, please). So many of us (Repubs, Dems, Conservatives and Liberals alike) could "most likely" benefit from the type of research that was limited under Bush: Al Kostecki (if you need a new liver, Allen, better to lay off of the Jack, for god's sakes), Mark's son (and wife) and my son Lars, who despite the fact that he was cured of his infant cancer, is at a significant risk of a much harder to cure, genetic cancer in the future. Nancy Reagan is behind this research because of the promise it holds for the treatment/potential cure of Alzheimer's, MS, hereditary cancer, etc., etc. etc. I keep thinking that if the type of stem-cell research you were speaking of held so much promise, it would have shown results by now. But, I'm happy to look into what you have read about.
p.s. Rich says he's sorry, I'm sure. And you're right- his bark is much worse than ... well, actually, he has no bite. Just all a front!
Phil,
SO SORRY ABOUT YOUR JOB! I hope you find something else soon! How scary to be facing a layoff! I'll be thinking of you often in the next coming months and hoping that you find suitable employment.
HOWEVER, I totally disagree with your view of socialism. While you are correct in reciting the definition verbatim from the dictionary, socialism as practiced in conjunction with democracy and free markets in many other countries resembles nothing like the definition you quoted. And I speak from experience. I am not saying that I think that the U.S. should become more socialistic, like many Western European countries have, but I do believe that a more level playing field allows more opportunities for ALL to benefit from the promise that our capitalistic and democratic government affords. In otherwords, we are certainly NOT heading for the type of socialism you described - just maybe a more level playing field.
Having said that, I don't want to offend you - you were one of the people that I met at the reunion that I was most happy to be acquainted with (hows that for ending a sentence with a Chicagoism - nobody ends a sentence with a preposition out here!)
Cherie,
I'll also be thinking about you and hoping that you'll get a new job soon!
Rich,
I apologized to Elisa for you. Now say "thank you!"
EVERYONE,
Thanks for being who you are. These last few months have been quite challenging for me. My mom does have stage 4 lung cancer and I have quit my job to help her seek treatment. I so enjoy jumping on the website when I am with her up in Maryland just to see what everyone is up to! LOVE TO YOU ALL!
