James (Jim) Maurice Tierney

James (Jim) Maurice Tierney, born April 2nd, 1950, passed away on September 6th, 2024, peacefully surrounded by family.
He is survived by his children Colleen Tierney (Kraig Brody), Craig Tierney (Andrew Kemmerer), Gregory Gard, grandson Dain Stalder, siblings Midge Everett, Jean Mottet, Kate Haas, Mary Johnson, John Tierney, and Trish Dietz, his favorite sister-in-law Joyce Tierney and “The Bros” Jim Haas, Cary Johnson, Pat McDonald, and Jeff Dietz.
He is preceded in death by his parents Maurice (Moe) James Tierney and Helen Cecelia Tierney, beloved sister Martha McDonald, and “The Bros” Jim Mottet, and Dale Everett.
Jim moved to Winnetka Illinois in 1998 and then to Chicago in 2002 where he remained until moving to Cedar Rapids Iowa in 2022 to be near his children. His love for Chicago, and the Cubs and Bears, was only rivaled by his love for his family. Jim had a lust for life that was unmatched. His humor and quick wit brought a smile to anyone who met him. He was the king of bad dad jokes and had a mischievous grin from the day he was born till the day he died. Jim believed in fighting for the betterment of all people and cared about what happened to those less fortunate in life. He bucked the system any chance he got, lived his life by his own terms, and believed rules were made to be broken. A strongly idealistic man that marched not to his own drum, but to his own complete percussion line. Jim loved to read and to stay informed on current events, had a strong love for the arts and music (especially the Beatles), was an avid sports fan, and cared deeply about the current state of the world. He has left a void in the lives of all those that knew and loved him that will be impossible to fill.
There will be a celebration of Jim’s life at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road in Dubuque Iowa on September 28th, 2024, from 1-3pm, with progression to the final resting place at Mount Olivet Cemetery where military honors will be accorded by American Legion Post #6. A reception at Old Chicago to follow the burial. Attire is casual but the family requests everyone represent your favorite Chicago Sports team (Cubs, Bears, Bulls or Blackhawks) in honor of Jim’s love for Chicago Sports.
All flowers sent will be donated to Linn Manor Care Center in Marion Iowa where Jim spent the last few weeks of his life to brighten up the rooms of the residents. In lieu of flowers donations will be donated to the Jim Tierney fund which will provide assistance to Dubuque residents struggling with addiction and their road to recovery. This is in honor of Jim’s strength and courage to tackle and overcome his additions in 2001
RIP Jim and know you will be missed by many and will remain forever in our hearts and minds until we meet again.
