In Memory

Billy Speck - Class Of 1980

Billy Speck

The following information was provided by Bill's mother, Barbara:

Bill was born 14 Nov 1961. Donn and Sindi had been sent to stay with their Grandma Cordry in Montezuma Creek, Utah. When they were brought home Donn went directly to the bassinet, looked in and said, "I don't like him. Throw him in the garbage." Sindi was too small to give an opinion.

Bill was the most happy-go-lucky child we had. He was always so full of piss and vinegar and had dimples you could lose a finger in. He was also the cleaningest kid we had. Didn't matter where he went, Bill would find a mess and clean it up, inside or outside and it didn't matter whose house it was. Everyone loved Bill. His grandmother called him "Hap," short for Happy Hooligan. And he was very patriotic. We always had to put up the flag. It was so important to him.

Following graduation Bill went to work in the oilfield of Montana for his father. Eventually he moved to Oklahoma and it was there he joined the US Navy. Bill was a medic in the Navy. He served at Camp Pendleton, went through training with the U.S. Marine Corps and flew on one mission to Kabul, Pakistan before being honorably discharged. He was very proud of the fact that he had the honor of delivering a baby during an ambulance run. He remained at Long Beach where he was employed by a physical therapist and later at St. Mary's Hospital.

His obituary:

Albert W. “Bill” Speck
Nov 14 1961 – June 28, 1997

Graveside services for Albert Wm. “Bill” Speck, 35, Oacoma, will be held in July.  Mr. Speck passed away Saturday morning, June 28, 1997, at the home of his parents, following recent surgery for lymphatic cancer.

Albert W. Speck was born Nov. 14, 1961, at Aztec, San Juan County, NM to Emil and Barbara (Stallman) Speck. He followed his parents through the oilfields of New Mexico, Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Nevada, California, Montana and North Dakota. He moved to South Dakota in 1979 and graduated from Chamberlain High School with the class of  1980.

He worked in Montana for about a year before moving to Oklahoma City where he enlisted in the US Navy in 1982. He was honorably discharged from Camp Pendleton, CA in April of 1986. Following his service, he worked as a physical therapist  at St. Mary’s Hospital in Long Beach, CA.

Bill returned to South Dakota and entered the University of South Dakota, Vermillion, in 1992, preparing for work in Social Services with Native Americans. Ill health forced him to discontinue his education in November of 1996, and he returned to Oacoma to be near his parents.

He was one of those people who was loved by everyone who took the time to know “Bill”. As a child, he demonstrated the utmost love and faith for God and the US flag.  Throughout his life, he was a “take-charge”  person, leading others in many worthy causes. As he came to blockades, he plowed through them always standing straight, tall and proud.

Bill had a special bond with his maternal grandmother. He never married, but was the best uncle a child could ever hope for. He was a full-of-life, Bette Midler, Rosie O’Donnell sort of guy and will be deeply missed by all.

Thankful for the time they had with their son, brother, uncle and grandson were his parents, Sister, Sindi of Las Vegas, brothers Donn and Casey and his fiancé, Nannette Biggers, all of Chamberlain, nephews, Jason, Chamberlain, Morgan, Las Vegas and Michael Palmese, Chamberlain; his niece, Taylor Speck, Chamberlain, paternal grandmother, Josephine Speck, Oacoma, maternal grandmother, Ann Cordry, Farmington, NM, and many aunts, uncles, cousins and special friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Albert Stallman (1960) and Wm. E. Speck (1992).

His cremains will be interred at Graceland Cemetery in Oacoma at a later date.

Very Special Friend, You touched my life. You are missed and Loved.
My first memory of Billy was in 6th grade in Miss Umburger's class. We had to play football and he was always tackling me to the ground. I didn't like that at all. But in 7th Grade that changed we had a lot of laughs and good times. Billy was always easy to talk to and was a good friend. He was always kind and would do anything for you. I will always have a special place in my heart for him. He always wore a smile. If I could change one thing I wished I had seen past that smile and been a better friend. I thought I knew him well and I didn't. Before he passed away I got the chance to speak to him. He shared his feelings with me. He was a Great person who endured to the end.
Billy we love you and miss you !
Your Friend
