Another nice man. I remember the day Hendrik Verwoerd was assassinated and someone came round and interrupted his class to break the news. The whole class cheered!! Such were the political passions of the day but Mr. Loureiro offered a note of caution-"Don't cheer too soon because Verwoerd's successor was to be none other than the former detainee Johannes Balthazar Vorster!! Ironically he turned out, by the standards of that time, to be relatively 'verlig"

He was an amazing man. For me, the one teacher I would really like to connect with again. He also put on that play “Hurray for Hazel” which at the time I was at High School was a serious new direction. I remember him discussing newspaper advertising in class, which open up a whole new world to me. Great guy!

Mr Loureiro never taight me on a permanent basis. Nevertheless, I do recall Mr McIver coming into our class to tell us that he would be replacing our current teacher who would be indisposed for a few weeks. I also recall Mr McIver telling us that Mr Loureiro had decided to qualify as a teacher a little later in life. I remember thinking what an admiral quality this was given that he will have taken a drop in financial benefits by moving from the commercial world to the grossly underpaid education profession. My Scottish educated mother who became the "Mrs Chips" of Morningside Government School in the 1950s/1960s and 1970s was of the same mould. I don't think she ever knew (or cared) what her salary was.

Mr Loureiro was the same.

SADTU should be ashamed!
