Professional qualifications: Member of SA Institute of Chartered Accountants and Institute of Marketing Managers. Served Articles with Roberts, Haley and Murray. Held a variety of positions as CFO and CEO with Alladdin Industries SA, Jonsson Group of Companies, Virbac International (Auckland and Sydney), East Coast Blood Transfusion Service and SA National Blood Service (Jhb). Retired back to Durban in 2012.

School Story:

Huh, I can't remember what happened half an hour ago, and I'm now expected to remember what happened 50 years ago?

Which teacher made the greatest impact on you in your time at DHS, and why do you say this?

I enjoyed "Maniac" McMichael's history lessons. Rob Drooglever was also good fun. Doug Robinson, Miss Clarence and Doug Drysdale were probably the best Maths teachers I came across. Didn't enjoy the last mentioned's "bacon slices" though. Mr McGee was a great French teacher but he tended to hit us all on the head with a French/English dictionary - probably could have sued him these days! Enjoyed Mr Van der Molen's science classes.

Do you still see/talk to/hang out with any classmates? Who?

Used to see Denzil Andrews fairly regularly when we were running. Geoff Caruth as well. Most of my other DHS running mates are from different years (eras). For example, the one and only Mike Clark, Tony Venton, Russell Simpson, Colin Cameron, the late Tony Robertze, Buzzy Brooks, Puppy Woodcock, Neil Harvey, Dougie Dowell, Robbie Savage, Graeme Campbell, Mike Celine et al. My running mentor and dearest friend for many years, Ron Edwards, matriculated at DHS in 1940 (Passed away at 94 in 2016) Those of us who trained with him will well remember his hilarious "war stories" whilst struggling up Inchanga. I'm sure that Mr Hitler extended the war for another 3 years when he realized that Ron had enlisted in 1942! As the founder chairman of DHSOB Athletic Club and a past president of DHSOB Club I was invited to be the guest speaker at the 1947 matric 70 year reunion lunch recently. A wonderful occasion! Since our 50th reunion, a group of about 12 of us '66's meet for lunch every 2-3 months in and around Durban.

How do you relax?

Go to gym most days and also run along the Umhlanga promenade. Play bowls at Mt Edgecombe CC. Drink a lot of wine. Travel a lot. Locally, Kruger Park and Berg fairly often. Europe and UK occasionally to visit my sister in Scotland. However, mostly to Australia to visit the kids and grandkids. They have all now moved to Brisbane from Victoria and NSW. Looking forward to when we can travel again. Had to cancel a cruise to Australia this year but have transferred it to October 2022 when hopefully, we are allowed to travel again.

What are some of your favourite inspirational verses or quotes?

"Carpe Diem".

Also had a framed copy of Desiderata on my office wall my whole working life

Happy birthday Rodney! The last time I saw you was a few years ago at one of our 2 monthly Class of '66 lunches at a steak house at the top of Mackeurtan in Durban North. If you are still in the Durban area you should get a hold of us. Our last lunch two weeks ago was at the new Old Boys Memorial pub overlooking the Rugby field at the school. A really fantastic facility.

Have a great day Bas. Ran many marathons in JHB in the old days with one of your old running mates. Can't remember his name. Can't remember
his club (RAC?). Can't remember much these days ha, ha, ha.

Cedric, have you moved from Tassie to Sydney? Coming over to Brissie for 2-3 months in November. All my 3 kids and their families have all recently moved from Melbourne, Sydney and Geelong.
