The other odd expression Mrs. Westhoff used when someone talked too much was "diarrhea of the gums"

Once when walking to school, a car splashed me with water on Dutch B'way. I went home crying. Rain or shine, snow, wind we walked to school in those skirts, Thank goodness at least we could wear tights, but they never had elastic so all day I would be hiking them up. Does anyone remember the hole in the fence to go through the ball fields, so you didnt have to walk all the way around. It was on the corner of Elmont Rd. and Dutch B'way and cut our about 10 mins of the walk. They would repair it and then someone would open it again.

Hey....can someone please explain what "business casual" means???? It was listed as the dress code for Saturday night. I was just wondering......I guess it all depends on what kind of business you're in. If you work at the five and dime, business casual would be sneakers, a sweat shirt and jeans. If you're the madam at a bordello, business casual might be a neglige and some boa feathers. Just wondering :)

Somebody, please explain!!!

All kidding aside, I'm looking forward to Saturday night.

My vote for the worst teacher was Mrs. Hasselback. Does anyone else recall a more mean spirited woman? Going back a few days... I think Mr. Faitell left Elmont and took a job at Jerico HS before our sr. year. His in laws owned/operated an all girls summer camp in Massach. and he hired me, Eddie Meslin and someone else from Elmont to work their for a summer or two. Good job if u can get it. Speaking of memories... does anyone remember going to either The White Tavern on Hemp. Tpke or Scotty's bar on Dutch. I bought my first beer at age 13 at the white tavern.

Suzanne-the actual expression Mrs. Marlowe used was, "My Glah-ses ah off. No moh Mrs. Mah-lowes"... I tell my fashion classes about that, and I use it when I want to take a break! Now I understand why she did that-otherwise the students never stop wanting you to check out their work!

I found the tape that I made of the 1988 reunion! It is fabulous. You will see what you looked like 20 years ago. There are some who are no longer with us. The quality is not great (a little fuzzy), but it's still something that we all will want to see!

What ever happened to Eddie Meslin?

Susan-
We can see if we can put the video of the reunion from 20 years ago on Youtube when I see you. Then I can put a link on this website. Who remembers Big Top Toy Store? Best toy store in the world!

Big Top is where I bought clothes for my Little Miss Revlon doll. I believe my Hula hoop also came from Big Top.

Was the White Tavern on the left side of the turnpike just before Great Eastern.

Roy, re Linda Larris...I think she graduated early because either her father died or her parents divorced...some family issue. She was very smart, as I recall.

Does anyone know where Gil Berke & Jimmy Urbalis landed?

My family used to go to Young's Tea Garden on Sundays for dinner & as a treat we would go to Carvel for dessert. I love Carvel to this day...not many around here in SE CT.

Walking to EMHS was cold. We would cut through the fence on the field whenever we could. I too have high school nightmares...getting lost, forgetting my schedule, not studying for tests, not remembering my locker combination...think I need intensive therapy!

All insecurities I had a a teenager are coming back as the reunion date approaches. Things I thought I outgrew years ago are BAAAAAAACK!

I can hardly wait to see everyone.

I was once leaving school cutting through the fence and trying to look so cool cause my brother Frank was behind me with Eric Germaine and other of his friends. I slid on the hill to the fence and went flying, books flying everywhere,

Here's a question - when my oldest daughter went away to college she became friends with a girl from Vermont who turned out to be Mark Kramer's niece. I could not remember why Mark didn't graduate with us. I bet one of you kids that grew up on Dutch B'way can help me out with the answer to that one.

I need some help here, please. I'm looking thru our yearbook and I see some teachers who signed my book. By what was written, it's obvious that I was in each one's class. But I'm having a hard time remembering much about these teachers. Can I be losing it at the early age of 58 years? OK, what can you tell me about Mrs. Murray (she referenced the Merchant of Venice), Mrs. Dere (English), Mrs. Rubinowitz (Social Studies), Mrs. Geelan (Math - I do vaguely remember her), Mr. Neilson (Math)?
Also, I just found my pix button from our 20th reunion. I think I'll bring it with my so no one has to say "Hey, you look familiar but since I haven't seen you since our 20th reunion, who the hell are you?".

I remember going to Scotty's on Dutch Broadway on graduation day with Mitch Bohn and Don Golden. They served small glasses of beer.

Never went to the White Tavern but I seem to remember it on the north side of Hempstead Turnpike near Elmont Road. Was it at the corner of Tulip Avenue?

Roy, I'm with you, except for one or two teachers. I have no clue who my teachers were. Some signed my yearbook with all nice things but I do not remember them. Sometimes I doubt I even went to the school although Sue says that I was there (except for my cutting Mrs. Sherman's class.)

too much to catch up on...so i'll just give it a shot....i knew i was supposed to always love pizza, but i always burnt the roof of my mouth and could never taste anyhting even though i loved going to Pompeii....
Carvel was always a treat....it still is, i used to walk over from N Valley Stream over Southern State Pkwy with my dad or Mikey A and Dennis W.
Alden Bootery always intimidated me, like I was supposed to know what I wanted and how it was supposed to fit and feel...still have hard time picking out shoes
Young's was an authentic slice of life, and sometimes we'd go to Lum Lee's on Central Ave which felt like step-up
Mrs. Westhoff was a wonderful whacko teacher, when we protesting the VetNam war across the street, that we had to get permission to do so, she'd gather the young republicans and protest us.....
Mrs. Marlowe bugged me so much that I wrote nasty comments about her in the back of my notebook and when it came time to turn in notebooks for grading she apparently read these really nasty things, and she sent me to the school psychologist.....
Gil Berke- does run the fishing expeditions on "outerexcursions" and Jimmy Urbelis is coming on saturday
and
Sue Baum-please bring this valuable video with you and make a copy of it before you bring it, and we'll get a VCR and TV to show it somewhere....

I would like to know where George Cohan and Robert Bianco are. I have tried to contact these 2 chums of mine , but to no avail. The White Tavern was an old mans bar, Scottys I think is best remembered as our local bar. I used to work in the A&P across the street from Scottys with John Ligouri, instead of Scottys I would sneak down to Gouz and drink their yummy chocolate milk. Janet Dispenza's father owned the ESSO station on the other side of Miriam Parkway .Why our Carvel is gone I haven't a clue? This Forum is the best . sorry if I rant a bit.

Does anyone remember Mrs. Aronson (Selma)? She taught business law. She would tell the class that because it was rude to say "shut up", she would instead tell us to "kindly shut up". For some reason, that left an impression on me. Probably because she was such a character.

white tavern was on the north side of the tpke a couple of blocks west of great eastern but not on the corner of tulip.

One of my favorite teachers was Mr. Lavorando, who taught geometry brilliantly and was coach of the wrestling team. During class exams, he would sit behind his desk reading the day's newspaper. To combat any suspected cheating, he'd poke a hole through the middle of the paper, hold it up, peer through the hole, and scanning the class, back and forth as we took the test in sort of an imitation of Maxwell Smart and Inspector Clouseau. This bit of "clandestine snooping" just cracked us all up. Also, Bennie would do the Plattsburgh State cheer on the last day of class. It was hilarious to see that little guy jump around like that.

Bruce - I can easily fill you in on George Cohan. The guy I first met at Dutch Broadway Elementary School still remains my closest friend. He's more of a brother than my own brother is. George is a real estate lawyer in Ridgefield, CT. He has been married to his wife Judy since 1973. I was best man at his wedding. I still remember that the temperature was well over 90 degrees that day. They have 2 daughters - Katie who is in grad school in Calif and Meagan who is a sophomore in RI. If you saw George walking down the street, you'd still recognize that face except the hair is all gray. Unfortunately, he won't be at the reunion. He has an obligation to be at Meagan's Parent's Weekend. I'm also still very close to John Interrante and Bob Walters. I won't bore you with their life histories since both will be at the reunion. Saturday is almost here - hooray!!!!!

Bruce - Your description of Mr. Lavorando's class is so accurate that I can picture my self sitting there. He was a great teacher who will be remembered by all of his students. I can add two additional memories. He would listen to a student give a ridiculous answer and get him/her to elaborate further and then turn to the class and ask " what is this" at which point we would join with him in yelling " Utter nonsense". My second memory was hearing a loud boom weekly and watching the shower of glass descend to the ground from another bathroom window being blown out by fireworks.

Roy - It's great to hear that you and George Cohen have remained freinds all these years. I have many fond memories of the two of you!
