Barry Pitter (Pitter)

George - One of my early and great (admittedly fuzzy) memories of Alden Terrace goes something like this if I have this right. There was a sort of field trip to your house, which was near the school, and listening to "West Side Story" in your basement. We especially liked a song about Officer Krumpkie. There was a lyric in the song with the word "bastard" or some similar epithet and at that age we got a kick out of the irreverence of it. In those days, to even say the word "hell" was forbidden.
Anyone remember that?

These posts are great and starting to bring back memories! The descriptions of Mr. Lavorando are so accurate. Some of my favorite teachers were Mr. Lederway..we listened to the Beatles and classical music in his English class, Mr Giels arguing why Barry Goldwater should be President. I remember the physics teacher (?Weiss) that threw erasers at the guys, Mr Smith teaching European history as though it was a football game....Other great teachers Mr Glassman, Ms Lefkowitz,Ms Hart. I remember Mrs. Sherman because it was in her class in Nov '63 that we heard over the PA that President Kennedy was shot and killed. We all went home early that day. I also remember being in the big space in front of the auditorium one fall day and discussing the possible end of the world b/o the Cuban Missile crisis. I hope that I can make it to the reunion so I can recharge my memories.. It will be a last minute thing....

Susan - The physics teacher was Mr. Ohriner. I wonder if he practiced throwing erasers at his family at night. I couldn't imagine that guy being that good as a natural eraser thrower. Mr. Weiss was a 9th grade Earth Science teacher. I also worked for him as a student ass't. He was definitely one of the best teachers I ever knew. He taught me a lot about how teachers thought and how to prepare for tests. He actually became a guidance counselor at the school and I am sorry to say that he passed away a good # of years ago. I also loved having Mrs. Gevirt and Mrs. Levinson for 7th and 8th grade science. They were also wonderful teachers and special people to me.
Susan - Try to rearrange your schedule. In this crazy world of today, we all need the time to go back and think about how simple life use to be!

George - I still remember the day we were being measured for our senior caps and gowns. You, me and and a couple of other guys were playing cards on stage in the auditorium waiting our turn. Mr. Megarr came walking in and you took off like a bat out of hell because you were afraid of being caught and suspended just before one of the championship basketball games. Is my recollection correct?

Roy - I'm impressed! You remember it exactly as it happened. Here is another test of your memory. In Mr. Ohriner's class - I believe we called him Mr. "O" The department chair constantly came in and told him that he was a great teacher - but that he had to stay focused and not jump from topic to topic. What was his name, I can't remember?

Speaking of basketball - I had the opportunity to talk with Richie Moran 4 years ago when he tried to recruit my daughter to play for Cornell. It was great talking to him about defeating Dr. J (Roosevelt HS) in the post season. I remember the principal coming into the locker room after the game as excited as we were and giving us the next day off as long as we signed in by last period so we could go to practice to prep for playing Hempstead.

The game took place at Freeport HS in the afternoon. One of those fans cut one of the refs on the forearm during that melee. In the locker room after the game Julius Erving (Dr. J) came into our side of the locker room and congratulated everyone on our victory. Classy guy even in HS. If I am not mistaken George Peiper did a great job defending Dr. J that day. Witzman might have covered him also that day.

roy and george are u kidding about thinking Megarr would suspend an athlete? I got into trouble for sometning in ou sr. year and was sent to Megarr. He laughed and told me to just tell the teacher that he was giving me detentions. He never did. As a matter of fact he told me a great story. He told me that when he was a teen he was walking home and was cutting thru a police station lot and there was a cop car running with no one in it. He told me he actually took the car and drove himself home leaving the police car near his house. He told me that he thanked God he was never caught because he probably would not have ever been given a teachers license. Does K. Geils have access to this forum. If not he should. He might be able to add a great deal.

Since while students at EMHS we were all hormonally infused adolescents, I'd like to pose the question: which teacher/teachers did you have a crush on? I have to admit that my first huge crush on a teacher occurred in 6th grade at Alden Terrace. I looked forward to Miss Jane Karp's class every day, and cherished the moments when I got a chance to go up to her desk, peer into her big brown eyes, and ask a question about long division. Sweet memories....

Oh that is so easy Bruce, ask any girl that went to Dutch B'way, MR BISHOP! His white bucks and his Old Spice, I'll remember that forever.

Joanne, I had Mr. Salem in 6th grade and I thought he was so cool!!

well i guess this is almost it before we all see each other in a few days, we are all a bit "bigger", looser and whatever than we were when we were all pretty innocent in 1968...so everyone get here, drive safe, fly safe, hitch safe and one warning, there is a lot of really great vintage dance music, and 60's rock etc that we put together from polling all of the earlier responses to the reunion, so if you do not bring your spouse, it is perfectly ok to ask anyone from your class, we may even have to double up.....
PS: Tullo great suggestion about Ken Geils and this website!
PPS: Was there ever anyone sexier than Susie (alalabongbong) Strober, an absolute knockout!!!!!

I had a crush on Mr. Lederway, but I'm sure I wasn't the only one! Who else???

PHIL RICE ED MORAN JOHN LIGUORI AND I JOE GENTILE WOULD HANG OUT AT THE WHITE TAVERN. THE OLD MAN BEHIND THE BAR WOULD SERVE US BEERS WITH NO QUESTIONS ASKED. I WAS SEVENTINE AT THE TIME AND NEVER HAD TO SHOW PROOF. WE WOULD DRINK AND DRIVE AROUND LIKE A BUNCH OF NUTS. TIMES SURE HAVE CHANGED AND FOR THE BETTER AS FAR AS THAT GOES. REMEMBER THE COPS WOULD PULL YOU OVER SHIT FACED BEHIND THE WHEEL AND WOULD TELL YOU TO GO AND SLEEP IT OFF. UNREAL.....THEY HAD THE BEST HAM ON WHITE BREAD WITH EXTRA MUSTARD. OR MAYBE IT SEEMED SO AFTER THE BEER BATH......JOE

If anyone is in town and looking for something to do this evening, or if you just want to have a pre-reunion reunion, a small group (plus whoever else shows up) are going to an italian restaurnt in N. Bellmore by the name of Eisa's. It's on North Jerusalem Road (or Avenue). Anyway...we're meeeting at 6:30. Why don't you join us.

Angela Destafano, Gerry Boriello (in from Florida) Dale Baker, Audry Morehouse, Carol Montegino (I apologize if I'm not spelling names correctly) and myself will be there. Just show up.

I'm sure we can all find excuses not to go out on a Friday night. Especially since we'll be going out anyway tomorrow night. But, just come and join us. TIVO whatever it is you're going to sit home and watch on TV tonight and live a little! See you later (hopefully) :-)

I hate to be the bearer of more bad news but I learned late yesterday that Chuck Silver passed away yesterday. It appears he had a massive heart attack. I worked with Chuck at the Nassau Probation Dep't until he retired 2 years ago. I have no details about services etc.

Chuck lived next door to me but we lost touch after I moved away from Elmont Sad to hear that.

Last minute question before the reunion. I'm on the phone with Bob Walters who is computer illiterate. So I'm he's secretary. He admits to throwing the egg at Mr Compton. But he swears that he wasn't caught that day. Some female classmate "ratted him out" the next day. So after 40 years, he wants that person to come clean. If it was you, please admit to your indiscretion when you see him at the reunion. If you're not planning to be there, then tell all of us on this site.

Hi Bill--

I copied the video at your suggestion and now I have entered 2008 and got it onto a DVD!

So we won't need a tape player, we will need a screen & a DVD player.

Hope you get this message at some point, Joanne & I are looking forward to seeing everyone.

Let me be the first to say "BRAVO" to everyone on the reunion committee! What a truly outstanding evening this was...well planned, well executed...and what great memories we'll all have. Thank you so much.

What a great time we all had! The Reunion was a complete success, and I know everyone who attended felt the same way. Hope to see everyone in 5 more years!

Was that one hell of a party or what?! I'm just sorry that I had to leave at only 1am when the "continued" party at the hotel bar was still going strong. Can someone who was there tell me if it went all night long? I have a fun idea if anyone wants to join me. I've listed below some "post renion" questions with my answers. Feel free to reply to the forum with your answers and add more if you like. I think we'd all get a kick out of seeing what others have to say. So here goes:
*person(s) who I immediately recognized: Jake Fishman, Phyllis Menlowe, Susan Baum, Jeff Turshen, Jay Bolnick, Shelly Franz, Billy Salmansohn, Joe Gentile, Ginny Shack - actually there are a lot more but I'll stop here
*person(s) who I didn't recognize at all: Danny Travers, Eddie Meyer
*person(s) I had the most fun with: Phyllis Menlowe, Jake Fishman
*funniest: Jake Fishman (by a landslide), Cliff Wasserman
*best stoytellers: Jake Fishman, Mike Tullo
*person(s) I wish I spoke to but didn't get around to: Jane Froelich, Carrie Czajkowski
*person(s) I wish had made it to the reunion: Debbie Helfand, Sabra Nalven, Kenny Rosen, George Pieper
*saddest reunion moment: when someone told me that Jeff Press passed away. He and I shared some great times in high school.
So those are my first post reunion thoughts. What are yours? I'm sure I'll be back shortly with more!!!

The reunion was great! I enjoyed breakfast with everyone at the hotel the next morning too. I wish I could say the same for the plane trip home (got in hours late). So... the next reunion is in Florida, right?

I forgot to mention earlier today that Bob Walters and I broke into Elmont Memorial HS Saturday afternoon and spent about an hour walking around the halls. A lot of ghosts in those halls. We stood right in the spot on the auditorium stage where George Pieper quickly desserted a card game when Mr. Megarr came walking in. George was afraid of getting suspended just before one of the championship basketball games. We stood in the cafeteria and could still hear Mrs Rigatelli yelling "You - up - out". We walked right past the library. I didn't even know the school had one. I guess I never spent much time there. We looked into Ms. Rollins' music room; Mrs Greenberg's art room (Bob actually remembered it was Rm #144) and a lot of other rooms. We even went into the principal's office. Can you believe the door was wide open. The hallways looked narrower; the lockers were green instead of puke pink but the place looked basically the same way it looked 40 yrs ago. In 5 yrs, we should plan a reunion tour thru the school. I'm sure we'd all have a lot of "ghosts from our past" to let out!
