In Memory

David Krieger

From Fran Milstein Poris:

I have some sad news. David Krieger died in March of a heart attack. His sister Lenore called me yesterday & told me of his passing. Very sad.

I was shocked today to hear of David's premature passing.  I knew him pretty well and spent a fair amount of time with David in the basement of his home that he had pretty much turned into a music room.  He played sax and I played piano.  We both loved jazz and David was a big influence on me. He knew more than I did.

Talk about dedication to principles---there was one summer when I was offered a job playing in a band in the Catskills (it was pre-1968). I asked David if he'd like to be our sax player.  It seemed like a pleasant enough way to spend the summer.  He told me that he'd rather do some other kind of summer job than play music that wasn't jazz.  At that age, this made a strong impression on me, a good one.  I thought, wow, this guy wants to play music that he feels and believes in or not play music. It's something that's always stayed with me, the strength of David's belief in what he felt was true and good.

He also had what must have been thousands of records lining the wall of his music room.  We'd listen to cuts, and he told me once that his rule was to not listen back-to-back to two tracks off the same LP.  He wanted to really hear what he listened to and to keep the music varied and unpredictable, to not fall into a rut.

I felt very much at home when I dropped by the Kriegers.  His parents and sister Lenore were great to me and I share the family's sense of loss.

I saw David approximately five years ago.    He was working for the alarm company that I have a contract with, and he was the technician that came to my home to do work.

What a wonderful surprise for both of us when we recognized each other.   We chatted and chatted for over an hour as we reminisced about days of long ago when we were in Dutch Broadway.

David looked wonderful and was trim and fit.  He was newly married to his second wife and his face lit up with joy when he spoke of her.  He told me how happy he and his wife were together, and that they got along great and cherished every moment that they shared together.

He spoke of his love for music with a passion.   He was a happy person and fully enjoying his life.

It is so very sad that his life has been cut short.

May he rest in eternal peace.

So sorry to hear of David's passing. I hadn't thought of him in years and recently saw his profile and was getting ready to drop him a line.

I will always remember when he had his nose fixed. He brought the piece of cartilage they removed into school in a little bottle and showed it around to anyone who would look at it for about a week!

Rest in peace, David
