From Mike Limmer:

Memories of my friend Mickey Abelson

MIckey moved to Elmont when we were in the 10th grade.  We became close friends almost immediately.  We trudged thru the snow to each other's houses.  We laughed a lot and had great time together at EMHS,.  We were on the wrestling team and lifted weights together.

While I was an under-graduate student at NYU- Mickey managed the Cafe Au Go Go on Bleecker Street.  I would visit him and sit through a couple of shows a week.  We sat with Richard Pryor and other known entertainers of the era.  I really enjoyed those times together.  He gave my daughter her first stuffed animal.

Unfortunately those good times did not last, although the memories have....  Mickey died in 1969 of Hodgkins Disease.  I went to the Veterans Hospital in the Bronx to see him during the course of his illness for over a year.

I think of Mickey often and I miss him.

Our classmate.......My friend.

I remember Mickey Abelson.  For a very brief time we  had  crushes on each other. It was  really brief, but I remember it well. One day we were sitting on the  steps in front of my house talking about my dad's car..a white Buick "Special" with  silver portholes on the side. I thought the car and my dad were so cool.   Mickey's comment, "It's a pig car". I was crushed. I don't know why I remember that comment. But I've never forgotten it and I have never forgotten Mickey. I always thought he had died in Viet Nam. I appreciated hearing Mike's memories..
