The Prince of Ice Palace Howard Roy Kanner 1945-1996
Howard Kanner died early in the am of May 29, 1996. It has been more than six years since his sudden, unexpected,and blindingly shocking leave taking. His presence was intense, his departure, equally so. A well respected and highly successful Orthopedic Surgeon in Pittsfield, MA. Howie had undertaken recent training in mediation, feeling Medicine needed human intervention in support of technique and technology, and in the face of managed care. He made his mark as a beloved physician and as a humanitarian in his community. He was a biker, trekker, an outdoorsman and a lover of nature. He reveled in the pastoral field of Court Hill, his Berkshire home. Howie and I grew up together. From Dutch Broadway Elementary School, through EMHS and beyond. It was a glorious road into middle age. To his wife Ellen (Kipnis EMHS 63), his children, Josh (now 30) and Lila (25), to me my wife Debby, and my children, he was a bigger-than-life father, friend, confidant, playmate, and a best-good-buddy. Howie was a Kokopelli character from childhood on. He explored, he challenged, he provoked, and he loved; he carried life's tales to their fullest. We flourished in our relationships with him, we embraced his abundant energy and we continue to grow even in his absence. Howie's years at EMHS were a part of our shared Camelot. He is an unerring presence for me at our 40th reunion.
