The crest of the surge was quite high. We went up to the south drive inn to look west into the river valley to see if we could see it go by but we coudn't. I remember they were trying to get the horses out of the old Centennial Race Track. Unfortunatlely there were many that were killed in the flood. I remember listening to the radio about the flood. We were listening as the old Hampden Ave Steel girder Bridge got washed out. It then took out the new four lane concrete bridge that crossed the river west of Santa Fe. I remember it made a mess of the Overland Golf course. It took out all of the beautiful trees.

Our house had a milk chute. It was by the back door. It had a door on the inside and outside of the house. We used it to get inside when we forgot our keys.

Hi John,

How long were you able to use the milk chute to get in before you got too big?

Our family would go to the A&W on Belleview to get burgers and a gallon jug of Root Beer and then to the South Drive Inn. As young kids, we always wore our PJ's to the drive in so that after the movie our parents could carry us in and put us in bed. In high school we used to sneak people into the drive in in the trunk of someone's car.

A favorite Christmas tradition was to drive to downtown Denver and look at the christmas lights on the Civic Center.

How many of you remember the Fuller brush man going door to door selling kichen/household gadgets?

In the summer time, we would climb up on the roof of our house to watch the July 4th fireworks which I believe were set off in Cenntenial Park.

I remember playing a lot of tennis at Belleview Park and watching the baseball games.

Hi Nancy,

I think I could fit through the milk chute at least until 9th or 10th grades, I was pretty skinny!

We used Richard Hoffman's car to get into the drive in. He had the back seat set up so you could remove it once we in the drive in and go directly into the car without opening the trunk.

I don't remember you being ornery enough to sneak into the drive inn. Who did you do that with? I played at the Bellevue park tennis courts quite a bit. Did we ever play?

Hi John,

A group of us girls did the sneak into the South Drive Inn. May have only happened once. I wasn't cheap. It was a way step out of the box. My parents raised me by example, so I stayed in line most of the time. I only cut class once in our senior year. Between Sinclair Middle and Englewood High, I had six years Perfect Attendance. I actually liked school.

Sandy Baker and I played a lot of doubles with 2 guys who were a couple of years older than us. I don't remember their names, but they were in my older brother's class of 1967. I don't remember playing tennis with you or Roger. Besides you would have beaten us.

Is the Army-Navy store on Broadway still open. It was a great place to find unique items and camping gear.

Oh yes I remember the flood. My Dad lost his tractor/trailer rig in that flood. I had to get shoots and had to help my family dig out the muck and mud out of 2 great aunts and uncles homes in Globeville (I70 & I25) Started with a very serious rain storm down by Castle Rock and Plum Creek swelled. That was the reason they built Chatfield Reservoir, my father-in-law was the Chief Engineer for US Government that had the damn built. Better late then never I guess. He had tried for 20 years to get a flood control damn built is that area. My uncle used his companies’ airboat to rescue people trapped alone the river (still have the Rocky Mountain News picture and clipping).

Yes I remember the glass roof swimming pool, could never afford to go there. Swimming was done mostly in the ice cold waters of the South Platt River near Deckers. I had a aunt that managed the Twin Cedar Lodge up there. Once in a while got to go to the swimming pool in Englewood City Park before the city sold the land to build Cinderella City. That land was donated to the City to be used for only for open space or park. So much for political truth and doing the right thing. When the last member of the Miller family died, BOOM the city cashed in on a windfall. (Sorry let me get of my soapbox.)

I have to laugh, I still have a mike chute next to the back door and Farm Crest Dairy still deliver to it they did not want to they wanted to use there wooden box. Talked them into seeing it my way.

Fuller Brush Man, there is no more door to door salesman but I still but their stuff on the Internet. Some stuff just is not built better.

The South and Centennial Drive Inns. Some times made it to the Lake Shore Drive Inn next door to KIMN radio station studios by Sloans Lake. Got my first chance to try water skiing in that murky water. I think I tried to swallows ten or twelve gallons on the sludge, yuck.

No more out door ice skating rinks in the area. A few up in the mountains not around town.

South Glenn Mall was leveled as well as Cinderella City. The sales tax where South Glenn was it just as high as the rest of metro are. That part of Arapaho County is now the City of Centennial.

I am sitting here getting income tax together, so this is a pleasant divirsion.

Dale sounds like you really remember the flood. Didn't they use all the revenue from the Cinderella City sale to build all the neighborhood parks and greenbelts?

Your mention of Deckers make me think of all the times we rode tubes through the chutes there and jumped off the cliffs into the river there as well.

Nancy I was pretty straight arrow and liked school for the most part. I never skipped, my dad would have killed me if he found out.

Well back to work

Good Evening Dale,

I remember learning to water ski on Sloans Lake. My dad's friend had a nice boat. My first attempt at water skiing took along time. I must have made 15 attempts before I got up, then when I finally got it, I went about a mile around the lake. It was fun, but I tired quickly.

I did not realize that SouthGlenn Shopping Mall is gone. What did they built in place of it?

I loved going to Elitches and Lakeside Amusement Parks, especially riding the roller coasters. At Lakeside, I remember riding the Chipmunk where the individual cars would look like they were going off the track because the front portion would extend forward in space before the car would turn. What a thrill! I still love going to amusement parks although the bones in my neck may not agree.

John, The land for other parks and greenbelts were aquired by the city either by the deal with Von Frelick (SP) and Associates or from the funds.

Nancy,
There is a shopping center (outdoor) and Apartments where South Gleen was finally after many delays it opened in 2009. Two of the Majors keep there building at South Glenn THe north end and the south end the rest is and new.

I do not know if you know this but the only building left where Cinderella City was is where the May you D&F was. It is now Engelwood City Hall, the rest of the area was scraped off and now shopping centers and apartments, a a small Walmart.

I gave got up on tring to water ski that summer, I just could not figure out if fall to let go of that rope. Sometimes ya have to beat me with a stick before I learn LOL.

This message board is a great way to catch up with each other before the reunion. I encourage any of you that would like to participate to do so.

Thinking about high school days is a definitely a trip down memory lane to remember old haunts, favorite hangouts, music, TV, movies, or sports:

Our class color was blue and white.

Our class project was paving the student parking lot.

OK Jan Perry & Lynne Mason help me out with the lyrics to some of our cheerleading songs.

Here's one:

We are the Pirates, mighty, mighty, Pirates
Everywhere we go...o, people will know...o,
Who we are...r, what we fight (stand?) for...
We are the Pirates, mighty, mighty, Pirates

We are the ones from Englewood High....
.......................................
We'll fight them with all our might,
So come on you Pirates, fight!

Nancy, did the student parking lot get paved? I don't remember that at all. Did the senior class raise money for the project?

The only school song I remember was our "Fight" song, Come on Englewood.

Nancy J Brown (Graf)

Hey John,

Nice to hear from you. Yes, the parking lot did get paved. It used to be dirt and full of ruts. I don't remember how we raised the funds...raffles, bake sales?

Do you remember the words to the "Fight" song?

I remember the first couple lines

Come on Englewood, come on Englewood,
Fight right through that line....

Is Frank's Pizzaria still open on Broadway and Union. I stopped in 10 years ago. Franks son Walter, who was a year or 2 behind us, was running it.

02/11/10 08:35 PM #45

Nancy J Brown (Graf)

John, I believe that Frank, "The Pizza King" restaurant is still open.

Remember, Larry Ruggera ('71) was a great drummer and had the fastest foot in town when he was playing a solo onstage.

I enjoyed the pep rallies, assembly, or carnival days so we could get out of class.

We also had a school commissary in one of the halls where you could buy candy bars, pencils, & small supplies.

The dress code:

Guys could not have their hair touch their collar
I believe that girls could not wear pants, only dresses or skirts which could only be so many inches above the knee.

Anyone remember the Der Weinerschnizel that used to be near Broadway & Yale? My brother used to work there. When we used to pick him up from his shift, we took our dog and she always received several leftover hotdogs. The dog always enjoyed the ride.

The good news is the Franks Pizza King is still here.

Nancy:

Der Weinnerschnizel on nthe corner of Dartmouth & Brodway my fav was the Polish Sausage Sandwich (Make then at home Now). The building is still there and well the Der Weinnerschnizel changed it business model and they change the name to "The Hamburg Stand" here in Colorado but in some other state Der Weinerschnizel still around.

p.s. The Hamburg Stand still has many of the Der Weinnerschnizel's menu items.

Anyone remember Der Weinerschnizel in the Shamrock Mall at Cinderella City.

Nancy, I do remember Larry, he was an amazing drummer. I remember Der Weinerschnizel on Broadway but not in the mall Dale. Orange Julius in the blue mall I do remember. Arby’s was my favorite fast food back then.

Didn’t they start to relax the dress code by the time we were seniors. Seems like they allowed shorts and facial hair??

Wasn’t the commissary a fund raising project for Honor Society?

Good Morning John,

I don't remember be allowed to wear shorts to school. We did have special days where we could wear blue jeans. I believe the guys could have long sideburns, but no beards. Just look at our senior pictures.

Google shows a Der Wienerschnitzel in Grand Junction and also one at the airport terminal in Guam of all places.

Hey, you guys! I got the photo galleries up and working and uploaded a few photos from 1968 & 1969 yearbooks. As soon as I get back my 1970 yearbook, I'll work on uploading class pictures. Please feel free to add to the ones you see. On the left side of the home page, just click on Old Times (good times I remember) and Old Friends (sit on the park bench like bookends). We can add more galleries if we want.

Nancy, you are right. Sideburns down to the ear lobe but no more. Maybe shorts were allowed on a couple special days.
