Robert Mielbrecht, our friend and Classmate from Oradell Junior High School and Dwight Morrow High School, Englewood, NJ, passed away June 25, 2024 in Spokane, Washington. It is sad to lose a class member. But Bob recorded his very interesting life activity on our DMHS “Classmate Profiles” website. Take a look.
Bob moved to Oradell, NJ in the 6th or 7th grade about the age of 13 and became our friend. Graduating from OJHS in 1955 he attended DMHS graduating in 1958. Bob was active in high school. There are many pictures of him in our “Engle Log-1958” Year book: DMHS entrance (pg. 5), Student Council (pg. 8), Soccer (pg. 16), Yearbook Business Staff (pg. 19), Diversity/The Snowball (pgs. 32-33) and Rugged Outdoorsmen (pg. 53). Some of his activities may have been missed but he was engaged at DMHS. Upon graduating he was accepted, attended and graduated from Georgetown University in Washington, DC studying Chemistry. Upon graduation he entered the United States Air Force and made it a 28-year career as an Air Force Pilot.
After graduation Bob attended Pilot training in Moody AFB in Georgia. He flew the RF-4 Phantom photo-reconnaissance aircraft taking pictures of targets, a dangerous mission. Bob flew many photographic missions during the Viet Nam war from our Thailand Airforce base. In 1967 Bob was ordered to Nellis AFB in Las Vegas, where he flew the F-111 Aardvark aircraft; a super-sonic, swing-wing, medium range multi-purpose military aircraft which required great skill. Later he was assigned to Turkey to fly similar photo missions. He was ordered to Mountain Home AFB in Idaho. This area was true enjoyment and is probably reason he retired to Spokane.
Bob and Pat, who predeceased him in 2022, had two children, Kelly and Emmet. Bob loved golf and fly fishing and this Washington area was great for that. Bob and Pat attended our 70th Birthday reunion in Amelia Island, April 2011. We enjoyed being with them. They both were active with the Spokane Civic Theater.
Six guys had maintained contact with Bob via email. We exchanged thoughts and ideas. The last communication from Bob was on March 4, 2024. He talked about his time in Nevada and questioned why his friends from Oradell got him involved with Soccer. He was very cognitive.
Today is Bob’s birthday, the 27th of September, he would be 84. Bob Mielbrecht was a good friend; may God have Grace on his soul.
