Penny Cantrill (Gilbert)

Penny Sue Cantrill Gilbert, 68, of Jacksonville, FL, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, June 28, 2021, at Baptist Medical Center South. She was born August 19, 1952, to the late James and Joanne Cantrill of Fairborn, OH. In addition to her parents, Penny was preceded in death by her father and mother-in-law, Charlie Ray and Annette Gilbert.

She is survived by her husband of over 49 years, Bruce Ray ‘Gil’ Gilbert; a sister, Debby (FHS-68) Cantrill Fields (Ken) of Fairborn, OH; two brothers,Steve (FHS-71) Cantrill of Huntsville, AL; and Jim (FHS-72) Cantrill (Mary) of Silver Springs, MD; brother-in-law, Edgar Wayne Gilbert of Covington, GA; daughter, Dawn Creamer (George, Jr.) of Tallahassee, FL; three grandchildren, Zachary, Megan, and Daniel Creamer; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

A 1970 graduate of Fairborn High School, she was most active in her choir group, A cappella. After high school, she met and married a young member of the Air Force, Bruce Gilbert, and moved to Apopka, FL. She would go on to live in Longwood, FL, Fairborn, OH, Port Richey, FL. and finally, Jacksonville, FL.

She worked her way up at Barnett Bank for many years before it eventually became part of Bank of America, and retired as a Vice President over commercial loans, where she handled such accounts as all Blockbuster Video locations in Florida and other large corporate lending activities.

Penny was a Southern Baptist and sang in the choir at Trinity Baptist Church in Apopka. She was also involved in charity organizations that touched members of her family, including St. Jude Children’s Research Center, Hospice, and Paralyzed Veterans of America.

She enjoyed cooking, travelling with her husband and family, watching old westerns tv shows and movies, and spending time with her family and her pets at home. Penny will be remembered by her family and friends as a kind, generous, and loving woman, as well as a fiery redhead who was strong in her beliefs and honest with her words.

So sorry to hear this! The entire Cantrill family was part of our church family at the First Church of Christ in Fairborn. Her grandmother was one of the founding members (Lona Mae Cantrill). A beatutiful person gone too soon.

Penny use to live around the block from me on Kapok St. She was an avid fan of our garage band. She was one of the first girls I ever kissed! Shortlived but memorable! Glad her life went well!

I knew Penny from the sixth grade through graduation.  She was a very sweet girl who always seemed to have a positive attitude.   I'm glad to hear that she had a good life.  My deepest condolences to her family and friends.
