Well, folks, the wheat harvest is on the 'trucks' (finally). I resorted to hiring the combining done, which turned out to be a huge blessing. Trying to do it on weekends was not working (little showers-high moisture, etc.) and, this past Saturday, the COOP decided to NOT be open after noon (or on Sunday). My little combine doesn't quite reach into the big 500-bu trailers, so all I could have gotten harvested was one 250-bu trailer-full, and one 300-bu truck-full. As it turned out, that wouldn't have gotten me very far through the field at all (a 'good' problem for once!). To top it off, the hired people couldn't even start harvesting until 5PM, as the wheat had picked up moisture from all the humidity Friday night and Saturday AM. The yield was so good, we filled both 500-bu trailers and both of the smaller ones. Probably well over 1,500 bu off of less than 22 acres. I'm soooo glad they got the field finished late Saturday, as it showered a little that night and some more on Sunday -- just enough to have made the grain "wet" again. The cost of hiring the cutting was well worth it, as the grain is (relatively) safely stored away. Now, to get it hauled.....
