School Story:

When I returned from Palm Beach County, Mr. Supank put me with the brass section, in the band, for marching contest...I was/am a short flautist...so I was hidden amidst the horns...all male and all tall. He wanted to hide me so if I screwed up, I would hurt the band's ratings. It worked...the guys guarded me, hid me, and yelled out commands so that I would turn at the appropriate times. The humor of it was not lost on us...we howled with laughter. Once they figured out that I could march and wasn't going to jeopardize the contest results...they were great, as long as I behaved and followed commands. They would take turns telling me which way to turn and when...under their breaths, of course...this way their playing was not totally interrupted....so someone was constantly playing and someone was constantly yelling, "Turn right, turn left!" And I did. I faked playing...couldn't be heard anyway and I couldn't walk and chew gum...make that march and play flute at the same time.

What have you always wanted to do that you haven't done yet?

Join the Peace Corps...still working on that.

Did you ever get stopped by Officer Banketas (sp?)? If so, what is your story?

YES...I was walking...too speedily?...no I stuck my tongue out and made a face at him and he caught me his rear view mirror. Does anyone know his story...why was he so mean? I though he was going to put me in jail.

Were you in the band?

yes

Were you a cheerleader?

NO...a majorette.

What did you do for stuntnight?

Don't remember stunt night...must have been at Riviera Beach a that time.

Do you own a motorcycle? If you don't, do you wish you did?

A Vespa is more my speed...or dirt bike.

Comments:

Moved to Dallas in 1971 so ex could attend school, after serving in USAF. Divorced in 1978. Worked in medical offices...remarried in 1981...a clinical perfusionist...I was working for cardiothoracic surgeons. Became a stay at home mom and then studied floral design...had two shops...one in downtown Dallas. Specialized in weddings and parties. Returned to school in 90's through present day...I'm a professional student...love anything in Liberal Arts...am also a political junkie...love Buddism and yoga...writing...am a folk artist and sell my work in an art consignment shop and do a few art shows. Have three grandchildren ages 18, 14, and 4 months and yes, they are wonderful...and they do go home so that is especially nice. I get back to Ft. Pierce a couple of times a year...my mom lives in High Pointe...I need to get to the ocean whenever I can to recharge. My husband and I have traveled pretty extensively in the past...attended medical meetings all over the US and even made it to Denmark. I love Canada and Mexico...if fact, I love every new place that I visit. Also love Alaska. But he has retired and our traveling today is done separately...he visits his grandkids in Pennsylvania and I visit my mom. He also has family in California and we have very close friends in the Boulder area...I love New Mexico...studied religious folk art there. Was and always will be an old hippie! We rescue animals...only two dogs right now..Mary One Toe...and Marky...we find them on the streets...have had as many as five. Also have cats and kittens...semi-feral...they discovered me and I furnish them a shed and food...and a nice backyard with a dogproof fence around their shed. On the other side of the yard I have a birdfeeding station, with several feeders for different birds and get lots of different birds including hummingbirds, cardinals, chickadees, titmice, jays, finches, woodpeckers, sparrows, crows and anyone else who wants a meal and a bath. Have gotten interested in family history and have been researching for several years...all of the small town libraries in Kentucky have wonderful rooms to find out about just exactly where and when our relatives came here plus the Native American connections. Also love to roam through the cemeteries...I'm one of those who can spend days in cemeteries. My husband was diagnosed with cancer in November 08 and was due to begin radiation therapy treatments in December. Then developed a nodule...supposedly a lymphoma....had to have it removed and it turned out to be NonHodgkin's Lymphoma and he had to begin immediate chemo therapy and the radiation had to wait. He has now finished all treatments and is presently cancer free...it was an ordeal...and he was very lucky to have a swift diagnoses and good doctors and treatment. Love the arts...just attended an exhibit of Diego Rivera's work at SMU...took my grandaughter to see Topol in Fiddler on the Roof in June...it's his final tour...was incredible. Love contemporary art, opera, musicals, John Prine, Jane Oliver, actually like most music...even Bluegrass. And I still love to read...mostly nonfiction. Have become interested in what's going on around me...and as most people seem to become more conserative with age, I have become more liberal...progressive...so please if any of you have these same ideals...let me know...I'd love to be able to speak freely for a change. I'm tired of biting my tongue until it bleeds...if any of you are out there, you know what I am saying! And a few years ago, I was diagnosed with ADHD...too bad they didn't know about it when I was in school...anyone reading this, won't doubt this diagnosis at all. Other than making everything in life twice as hard, I think this disorder has kept me doing and learning lots of new things because I can't stand being bored. And I want to continue doing and learning...bummer that my body fights me but hey, isn't 60 the new 40?

Dickie,

Hope you had a great birthday and did something special. Yea Medicare! Another month and I'm covered. Oh no...you're a 1950 person...well, hold on for a year...that's what I have been doing! Anyway, I'm going to stop counting BD's after I get coverage. Still an Obama fan! Take care, Mildred

Fran,

Hope you had a very special birthday. It was good to see you at the lovely service that you had for Felix...very sad but also a real celebration of his life. It was also nice to meet Mike. Best, Mildred
