Thankful
Today, I feel very thankful. That thankfulness is most fitting as we prepare to pause individually and collectively to give thanks for all with which we have been blessed. My list of blessings has always been long, but as the years roll by, the list continues to grow.
I’m thankful for where we grew up, a quiet peaceful beachside community where we left doors unlocked and, as we surfed, everyone knew the car key was on top of the tire.
I’m thankful for a potpourri of memories—the smell of the Dandy Bakery and low tide at the North Jetties, the thrill of catching air on Tickle Tummy Hill and a Friday night football game, the excitement of a first wave and a first kiss, the feeling of a warm breeze on a summer night and school spirit.
I’m thankful that I had parents who loved me and kept hidden from me that we were poor, until I was on my own.
I’m thankful for the new and renewed friendships I have with so many of you. I’m thankful for the pleasure of knowing not only you for the past 40+ years, but also now your kids and grandkids.
Most of all, I am thankful that I am thankful—that I’ve not grown sour, sad, and cynical over the past 63 years. I’m thankful that I know how darn good I have it and that having this life of mine has very little to do with me. I thank God daily for my health, my family, both blood and extended, for the assurance of my eternity, and the common sense not to take myself too seriously.
Happy Thanksgiving, everyone.
