School Story:
My memories of GBS are mostly ordinary things, and the fact that I really had a great time at GBS. I enjoyed the hell out of it, with only a few minor distractions. Life was good.
A freshman moment I recall: during freshman year (spent at GBN) when the gym teacher and gymnastics coach, Mr. Kopielski (always liked that name), commented on my height (I had just made it to 5' 0"): "They grow 'em big in your family, eh Freeman?" I suppose it had the potential to be embarrasing, but it sure as hell made me laugh at the time.
I do remember spending a lot of time drawing mazes with Dave Sugar, in a history class during summer school between soph and junior years. Also, skipping a summer school class to see a Cubs double-header - and nearly being busted by the V-Principal who called my house just as I was about to leave for Wrigley Field.
Always thought the NHS Trivia Test as a fund raiser was a brilliant idea - so much fun to work with Jim Wiss, Randy Hendee, et al, and come up with hilarious (to us, anyways) questions for the test. I think I may still have a copy.
Of course, I will always recall with fondness the meeting with Principal Schreiner that almost had a bunch of us suspended. It was such a scene to see Jim Wiss enter into a debate with Dr. Schreiner. Similar to watching a time bomb go off. Hadn't seen an adult quite so angry before that meeting.
Not much here in these ramblings about learning anything, although I am fairly certain I did. (No really hard questions, please) I do wish I had known then how many things I enjoy learning. I would have had a lot more fun with French and history classes. So much to learn, so little time.
