August 22, 2025

Hello the Mighty Class of 1980,

I am honored to announce my appointment as President of the Class of 1980. I’m excited to accept the position and look forward to serving in this role. Let me first thank Anita Phillips, former officers, and committee members of the Class of 1980 for their dedication and support over the years. Without their leadership and participation, the accomplishments would’ve never materialized. Also a special thank you to the host of classmates from past reunion committee(s) who have agreed to return in the same capacity. Their past dedication and input into moving our class forward kept the class unified and mighty.

One of our missions for 2026 is “Unity.” We were and still are the Mighty Class of 1980. The largest and the best class to every step foot in and graduate from Goldsboro High School East. Winners of everything and surrenders of nothing. It was our “Unity” that made us winners, and it will be our “Unity” that will continue to propel us towards greatness.

I want to give you a snapshot of what I’ve envisioned for the upcoming year.

1. Homecoming Tailgate Event with scholarship fundraiser on October 17, 2025.
2. Scholarship Fundraiser in early 2026.
3. Scholarship goal of $5,000 for Memorial Day weekend 2026.
4. Alumni's monthly commitments go towards the scholarship fund.
5. Memorial Day 2026 weekend events and cookout.

One person is not an island, and these goals can only be accomplished with a team, and you. I’d like to introduce you to myself and the new officers, with a brief synopsis of our duties, which will help us accomplish these goals:

* Deardra (Dee Dee) Dais Walker - President. Leads the committee, sets goals, and represents the class at official functions.
* Elizabeth (Toni) Lewis - Vice President. Assists the president and takes over leadership duties when the president is unavailable.
* Azlea (A~Z) Hubbard - Secretary. Records meeting minutes, maintains class records, and handles official correspondence.
* Deborah (Debbie) Medlin - Treasurer. Manages class funds, budgets, and financial reports.
* Fletcher Cobb - Parliamentarian. Ensures meetings follow proper procedure and helps maintain order.
* Latonya Highinbotham McDuffy - Class Clergy. Provides invocations, reflections, or spiritual guidance at class events.
* Delores Green-Knight - Class Ambassador. Represents the class in outreach, builds connections with other groups, and promotes class unity.
* Jimmy Alston - Webmaster. Manages the class website, social media, and digital communications.
* Angeline Grantham - Chairman of the Cookout Committee. Organizes and oversees all aspects of the class cookout, including planning the menu, assigning tasks, and coordinating with volunteers to ensure the event runs smoothly.
* Linwood Battle - Class Grill Master Chairman. Responsible for managing all grilling activities at class events, ensuring food is safely and properly prepared, and coordinating grill volunteers or equipment as needed.

My door is open, please feel free to contact me with your suggestions, concerns, or just to say hi.

Sincerely,

Deardra (Dee Dee) Dais Walker
Class of 1980 President

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Dear Goldsboro High School Class of 1980 Alumni,

First and foremost, I would like to thank each of you for trusting me and electing me to serve as your current Class President. This past year has truly been a journey filled with ups and downs, highs and lows, and several changes within the committee. Through it all, one thing has remained constant — I am a proud Goldsboro High School Cougar, and I do not quit.

No matter the challenges we may face, I remain committed to serving the Class of 1980 to the very best of my ability. I appreciate your continued support, encouragement, and confidence in me, and I promise that I will continue working hard for our class and our legacy.

At this time, I would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Tony Lewis, Azalee Hubbard, Angeline Grantham McGinnis, and Deborah Medlin for your years of service, dedication, and contributions to the Class of 1980. Your hard work and commitment have not gone unnoticed, and you will truly be missed in your roles. Thank you for everything you have done, and I sincerely hope you will continue to support our class as we move forward together.

As we continue through this year, we are looking forward to several upcoming fundraisers, new ideas, exciting events, and opportunities to branch out while continuing the traditions that make our class so special. I truly believe the best is yet to come for the Goldsboro High School Class of 1980.

I would also like to give a very special thank you to Jeannette Jones Inman. Jeannette has been absolutely instrumental this year. She has worked tirelessly behind the scenes, provided valuable information, stepped in whenever needed, and continuously supported the class with dedication and love. Jeannette, your commitment has been truly appreciated, and we thank you for all that you do.

In addition, I want to extend my sincere appreciation to Anita for her constant support, guidance, and advice whenever it was needed. Anita has worked diligently and has always been willing to lend a helping hand. Anita, you are truly a trooper. Through every challenge, you have remained strong, supportive, and standing tall, and for that, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Were mistakes made along the way? Absolutely. None of us are perfect. However, instead of walking away when times became difficult, I chose to stand firmly, remain committed, and continue moving forward. I will continue to fulfill my term with pride, dedication, and love for the Class of 1980 until it is time to pass the torch to the next leader.

At this time, I would also like to warmly welcome our new committee members:

Vice President – Rodney Williams
Secretary – Janice McLean
Treasurer – Chiquita Jones
Event Coordinator – Jeannette Jones Inman

Thank each of you for stepping up and answering the call to serve. Your willingness to help during a time when support was truly needed means more than words can express.

As we move forward together, let us continue to support one another, uplift one another, and keep the spirit and traditions of the Goldsboro High School Class of 1980 alive and strong.

With that being said, I would now like to turn things over to Rodney Williams and our newly appointed committee members. If anyone would like to say a few words regarding their new appointments, we would love to hear from you. Of course, if you prefer to pass, that is perfectly fine as well.

Thank you again, classmates, for your trust, your support, and your continued love for our class.

Warm regards,

Deardra Walker
President
Goldsboro High School Class of 1980
