Class of 1985 Member Meeting

 Business

We discussed that the purpose of the by-laws is to make sure we have structure and stay on the right track. It was noted that there was a discrepancy in the dates provided for terms of office for the current Core Committee members. Since their term technically began in Jan 15, 2011, it was moved and seconded that their term should end Jan 15, 2011 (completion of a five year term).  It was also agreed and seconded that the remaining information in the by- laws be accepted as written.

Discussion was made concerning the class paying annual dues to the Dillard Alumni Association. It was moved and seconded that $35.00 will be paid yearly. Sherry will handle this.

After much discussion, we agreed that the class will hold a raffle in order to help replenish funds into our bank account.  Currently, there is $898.12 in the account, with an additional $250.00 scheduled for distribution to our scholarship recipient.  We agreed upon raffling gift cards for $200.00, $100.00 and $50.00. Tickets will be sold for $5.00 and you do not have to be present to win. The raffle will be held

around Thanksgiving. Quique will talk to Anjanette Langston about the class potentially selling tickets during the GHS Homecoming game Oct 14^th. We will also check with her to see if the Class of 1985 could be displayed on the banner during Homecoming. A total of 500 tickets will be made, with 20 tickets being distributed to class members to sell. Quique and Allen will work together in getting the tickets printed. Future raffles for larger ticket items, like I-pods and Kindle readers, may follow in the future.

Upcoming fundraiser – Due to success of the White party, we have reserved Walnut Creek for next Memorial Day Weekend. More information will follow in the future.

We are currently working on setting up a Paypal account to be used via the class website. This should assist classmates in paying dues and other needed expenses.  The details are still being investigated and more information should be forthcoming.

This was our first class meeting in which we implemented use of the conference call (Cheryl, Ella and Paula each participated using this feature).  With the exception person speaking in low voices or speaking away from the telephone, this experiment seemed to work efficiently. It was agreed that, in lieu of face-to-face meetings on the third Saturday each month, we may perhaps utilize this conference calling feature.

Class of 1985 Core Committee Meeting

Memorial Day Weekend (MDW):

Sedrick Dunston (Class of 1986) mentioned that Dillard Alumni are looking for classes to have class picnics on the grounds of the Dillard Building. Quique noted that a few people in our class mentioned that they would prefer another place to have the picnic this year, as some were not comfortable with going to the homes of others. It was mentioned that for this year’s picnic we could charge about $10 per person and we would need to incorporate the whole families this time. Karen suggested that we ask the class who would be interested in attending a picnic this year. This was agreed upon and classmates will be notified via email, with a deadline of Mar 15^th to respond. Quique also agreed to check with Sedrick to see if there is a fee to reserve a spot on the Dillard grounds.

Fundraiser:

It was suggested that we could do something for GHS Homecoming, like hosting a social for alumni. Andre talked with some of our Caucasian classmates, who would like to participate if we had something at a time other that MDW. The venue would play an important part in making everyone feel invited and comfortable (like Lane Tree Country Club). This event could also be opened for other GHS classes to participate. We will start by finding out the date for Homecoming.

George had previously suggested a yard sale. This would require classmates to gather up items to donate for sale and having the yard sale at a central location.

The raffle tickets did well last year also and we will look into doing this again as well. This is a good way to raise funds quickly without a lot of work required.

For whatever fundraiser we decide upon, we will need to try to get participation from more classmates, especially those in and around Goldsboro.

Class scholarship:

Quique will ask Sherry for the current account balance. Depending on the account balance, we will try to give another scholarship to a deserving student. Quique will look at the list alphabetically (by first name) to select the fallen classmate we will honor for the scholarship.

Miscellaneous:

We agreed to email the class for feedback on all upcoming ideas.

We have 2 years before our 30^th reunion. It was suggested that we may want to consider taking a cruise, but this would probably not take place during MDW. We can look into package deals and maybe open it up to other classes that may want to participate. We can send an email closer to MDW to the class of 1985 about this suggestion.

We will have an open meeting before MDW, possibly next month. Core committee will meet after March 15^th to discuss what we are going to do this MDW (that will be after we get feedback from the email sent to classmates).
