Rick died on March 11, 2004 at the age of 54 from melanoma.  He was married to Rees Hamilton Carter for 25 years and they had two children.  Rick is survived by his wife, Kathy McCotter Carter; son, Anderson Carter; daughter, Adrienne Carter; and step-daughter, Mary Alice Bayer.
