Gwendolyn Steele was born on 22 December 1949 and was a graduate of the Ben L. Smith Class of 1968.  She died on 5 November 1970.  Her obituary, in the Greensboro Daily News, 7 November 1970 reads as follows:

"Miss Gwendolyn Steele, 20, a junior at A&T State University, died Thursday, 5 November 1970 in Moses Cone Hospital following a brief illness.  Her funeral was held on Sunday, 8 November at United Institutional Baptist Church.  Survivors included her mother and stepfather, Mr. and Mrs. Zachariah Mitchell; sister, Mrs. Claudia Hall of Greensboro; brother, Charles Steele, and half brother David Mitchell, both of Greensboro."
