George Sherman

Mike Quick,
Glad you joined us on the forum and thanks for the quip about the three nuts.Donnie and Bubba know that I'm just kidding with them. The Italian loafer story reminded me of selling them at my dad's shoe store,Johl and Bergman in Greenville. They were so popular that we had a waiting list on file to call when a shipment arrived. Some guys had numerous pairs and a boy at ST.Joe named Dusty Rosella got suspended for wearing a pair that he had spray painted gold.It was his second offense as he had worn a pair of silver spray painted loafers the day before.Do any of you remember the X-Ray machine at Johl and Bergman that you put your feet in with shoes on and you could see where your toes were in the shoes? My brother Michael still runs the store and if you walked in the door,it looks much like it did in 1969.
Susan,
I hope you know that you've opened the door with your crown story for Marilyn to wear her homecoming queen crown to the reunion.I saw the crown in a local jewelry store being refurbished with new stones as the old ones, from Marilyn wearing it around town so much, had fallen out or become dull. The jewelers bill will be sent to Ibsen to pay from reunion funds as this crown is an artifact of great importance to our class history.
Tommy and Lynn,
Your baby is beautiful.Let me know about Oct.24th.

Billy,
In 1971 I worked as a Ward Clerk in the ER at Delta Regional Hospital. Your mother was often there in the ER helping out when we were busy. What a wonderful lady.

Linda Dianne Burnett (Kistner)

George - I not only remember the x-ray machine but the Golden Goose!! Now that really dates us! My mother would time our trips back to the Delta so that we could all get shoes at J & B. I am an Air Force Brat (and wear that badge proudly) but my mother believed the only way we were fitted correctly was at J & B so trips were timed to coincide with shoe purchases.

Joe Clara - hopefully you still read the blog. Your mother was one of my favorite teachers. I remember being petrified of quoting Chaucer in front of the class. My speech impediment was bad enough but to have to quote Old English in front of the class really threw me for a loop. Evidently, she picked up on it and skipped my name as she was calling students to the front. After class she told me that she accidently overlooked me so that I would have to come back during study hall. This so happened to be her free period and she allowed me to do it just with her in the classroom. Afterwards she sat me down and informed me that I would not be able to go thru life without ever speaking in public and that "I need to get over it - this was the way life was and to accept it". That was probably the best advice I have ever been given - still don't like to but with my job it comes with the territory and I always remember that statement when the butterflies hit.

Billy - I well remember your mother and she was a great lady and nurse. I am so sorry for your loss.

Lynn - beautiful baby. Congradulations to your daughter and hubby!

George, where do I begin? If I were not laughing so hard I would be mad at you and your crown story. I have several crowns now and they are all in my mouth. Frank England escorted me that night and when I look at the pictures, I now see he looked better than I did...LOL

George -

I have a young man who has worked in my office since he was in high school. He has been at State for three years.
Today, as usual, I was on the forum, and asked him if he knew you. His eyes lit up, and he said you have the best store in town! He also told me about your commercials, and the song you have - "George Sherman, keeps ya lookin' good, George Sherman, keeps ya lookin'good!" Well, if that's just not a catchy little ditty!

Also, his name is Thomas Sellers, and is expecting BIG discount in the fall! (jk)
He really does like your store!
Very, very smart young man - I know you will enjoy meeting him!

Susan,
I will be happy to bring you some Hot Tamales. They will be waiting on you. These senior moments are getting worst. I don't remember the letter. I love to go to The Linen Shop in Canton. I will call you.

George,
You were too quick about Houston. Too Funny.

Rayner and Frank,
Thinking of You daily and lifting you both up in prayers. Our God is awesome and he has the final word. Rayner, I can remember sitting at the table in the lobby at the "W" when you told us you were going to marry Frank. Love to both of you.

Linda Diane,
The Goose and the X-Ray machine are both in Johl and Bergman's upstairs.Glad you had good memories of my dad who worked selling shoes for over 50 years at the same store.I'm starting my 38th year as a merchant and hope I can make it to 50 also.
Susan,
Tell the young man to stop by the store and meet so I can get some info from him about you to take some of the heat off of Marilyn since you two are the Tiara Two.

Susan Hughes (McCarty)

Jane Sherman - please tell the people at the Linen Shop to call me when you get there. Or you just call me, and I'll meet you.

Used to have some sweet friends who worked there, but I haven't been in there since I had to go buy material for Jim to spruce up a horse trailer living quarters.

Also, go to LaDiDa and Noble Watts and Sulms. They have some nice things. Susie Love (Marianne's daughter from Greenville - who designs jewelry) is my cousin, and LaDiDa sells her jewelry, so I certainly like to frequent that little shop.

Hello everyone. Some of us were talking about "missing" classmates. Does anyone know where Sam (Sambo) Fleming is these days? If so, please let me know. Thanks.

Hey Brenda, Sam is on the classmate profile. Click on his name and it will tell his information. He is coming to the reunion.

Sambo is coming, and he is just as cute as ever.

We got to see him a couple of years ago at Moorhead when Marvin was inducted into the Hall of Fame. It was a great day............Jim and I both are so proud of Old Marv, and we were so glad to spend time with him, his family, Sambo and his sweet lady, and Wayne Lee.

Susan Hughes (McCarty)

See ya, Friday, Chad!

If I am late, it means Marilyn is lost. I gave her directions to my house, and she will probably end up in Texas. My directions are like "go a few miles on that highway, but I can't remember the name of the Highway, and look for a sign, and if you see that sign go a few more miles and turn left, no i mean right............."

And of course, she probably won't have phone coverage to call me.

George, your daddy was like everybody's other daddy. It was amazing how children just naturally trusted him. Michael has the same gift, and all my sisters have returned from Dallas, New Orleans, Jackson and Shelby to make sure their children were properly fitted by the magic Michael.

Billy, my heart is with you. My Mama is still with us, and I can't imagine the loss.

Lynn, what a doll baby! I know you're all thrilled.

Cathy C., hope very much that we get a chance to visit at the reunion.

Danny, your wonderful, upbeat self just shines through every post!

Thanks to everyone on the committee for coping with all these last-minute complications.

It's past midnight so I can finally come out of my shell.

As of tonight, per the website, we have 116 classmates indicating they are coming to the reunion (probably an all time high). Also as of tonight, we have 79 classmates that have paid and that does not include St Joe grads. Including spouses, significant others and anyone else who shows up, we will end up with at least 150 which is great. The more the merrier!

With only a few weeks before the reunion, we need all you sleuths, detectives and nosybodies to see if we can locate other classmates. As I was going through the profiles, I noticed several names that have attended prior reunions but have not even completed a profile.
Lynn Black, Doug Chandler (came to the 20th and got an award for the most children; was living in Lousiana at the time), James Crittenden (isn't he a physician down on the MS coast?), Charles Dillon, Sam Goodman (he was at the 20th for sure), Cherri Griffin (surely somebody knows where she is????), Etta Littleton (Jane H - surely you know her whereabouts?), Kenny McNeill (he was at the 20th), Harry Tompkins (Susan H - he's in Jackson I think), Auvergne Williams (Susan - did you ever contact him?) and last but not least Tyan Wesley! We still have not heard from Bill Williams; he was at the 20th.

By the way, Marvin gave me a VCR tape of the 20th reunion. For those of you that remember, we met Saturday at Johnny McRight's barn and had a cookout with kids included. That night we were at the GGCC with the Krackerjacks playing. I watched the tape and their were many faces in attendance that have not responded to the 40th. It is amazing and somewhat digusting to see how young and thin we looked; I had hair and a "flat" belly! I will get with Marvin to see how we can convert the tape to DVD format so we can view it at the 40th! It's guaranteed to make you smile.

George - the Stag Shop, across the street from the Safeway grocery store. How did you remember that? How about Al's Record Shop? Surely you remember going in there? And finally, the Douglas Hotel by the railroad tracks. It was next to the old bus station across the street from the old YMCA. I remember Rooster and myself going in their with dates - what a dive!!

Kenny.....I have not thought of the old Douglas Hotel in years. Daddy used to take my brother and me there for haircuts. Mr. Frank Williams was the barber. His shop was in the polished tile lobby. It seemed so big to me at the time, but I am sure it was not. Behind the barber chair and over the giant mirror were pictures of The Williams Boys (Five, I think)dressed in their dance costumes. There was a shoeshine stand in the lobby and one of the Williams boys shined shoes (sometimes). I recall some of the men from the towboats would lay up there and basically stay drunk during their few weeks off the boat. They would come down the elevator, slide the steel screen "door" back and step into the lobby. Mr. Williams would say, "Get back upstairs or I'll call the police!" They would mumble something and stumble back to the bar in the rear of the hotel. My brother and I would talk about what we thought must be in that dark and smokey place. Daddy had told us never to go back there. Mr. Brown's watch shop was next door, I think.
