My Dad was stationed in GTMO June 1968-June 1970, where I attended W.T. Sampson Elementary school for 3rd (Miss Stammreich) and 4th (Miss Pichler) grades.
3rd grade: Miss Stammreich was older, like a bespectacled grandmother, but known to be a tough, strict teacher. Even though I got nearly all A's in her class, she once gave me a big fat "zero" on an assignment because I didn't understand the directions and (according to her) was asking too many questions... my Dad tells me he later spoke to her and had the zero removed!
In another memorable incident, I was reading one of my Hardy Boys mystery books down in my desk while she was teaching... but she spotted me and took my book and kept it till the end of the year. Months and months later I finally got it back from her, but had to start the book over because I had by that time forgotten the story.
She also held a year-long contest for the student who could read the most library books and write as short book report on a small lined note card. I won with about 45 books when it was end of year. My "prize"? She took me and my Mom for a free hamburger and fries at the Snack Shack next to the base pool.
4th grade: Miss Pichler was a young twenty-something teacher that I thought was the most beautiful woman I'd ever met (I'm of course, 9 years old). I was one of her star students. I recall once we watched a film on marijuana, and later I asked her to come look at a plant growing outside the classroom that I thought looked like a marijuana plant (it wasn't). Funny the things you remember.
